이 연구는 부자유 노동력, 디아스포라, 제국정책이라는 근대사의 중요 주제와 밀접한 관련을 보이는 대서양 노예무역이라는 역사적 사건을 종합적으로 다루기 위해 C. L. 브라운(Christopher Leslie Brown)의 『도덕자본: 영국 노예무역 폐지주의의 기원들』의 논지와 시사점을 분석해 보고자 한다. 이 책은 대서양 노예무역을 통해 부자유 노동이 확대된 과정뿐 아니라 그 흐름이 중단되고 폐지되는 과정까지 설명하여 논의의 지평을 확대하였다. 또한 이 책은 반노예제 이데올로기의 등장을 설명하는 데 있어, 인도주의 혹은 경제적 동기 중 하나에 무게를 두고 설명하던 기존의 이분법적 접근을 뛰어 넘을 수 있는 새로운 틀을 제공한다. 브라운 테제는 운동가들이 반노예제 운동에 참여함으로서 도덕적 신념을 따르면서도 동시에 개인적 이익을 얻을 수 있었음을 보임으로서 그들이 박애주의자이었는지, 위선자였는지에 대한 오랜 논쟁의 틀을 깨는 새로운 패러다임을 제공하였다. 마지막 지점에서 노예무역 및 노예제도를 둘러싼 논쟁이 제국정책을 둘러싼 당시 영국과 식민지인들의 치열한 논쟁과 연결되는 고리가 발견될 수 있다. 18세기 말 영 제국의 도덕적 권위의 위기 국면에서, 제국 정책의 지지자와 반대자 모두 노예제와 노예무역을 공격함으로서 자신의 견해에 도덕적 위신을 더할 수 있었다. 이는 당시 반노예제 수사가 개인 및 집단이 정치적 이익을 얻는 과정 뿐 아니라 국가 정책적 차원에서 자신이 옳다고 여기는 바를 관철 하는데 유용한 담론적 무기가 되었음을 보여주고 있다. This study analyzes arguments and implications of Moral Capital: Foundation of British Abolitionism by Christopher Leslie Brown(Chapel Hill: North Carolina University Press, 2006), in order for a comprehensive understanding of important themes in the modern history such as forced labor, diaspora and the imperial policy. Brown’s thesis broadens the scope of research areas, explaining the developmental process of the antislavery movement as well as the expansion of forced labor through the Atlantic slave trade. Moreover, his work breaks fresh ground in the debate of abolitionists’ motivation. Moral Capital emphasizes the transcendence of abolitionist motivation beyond the dichotomy between humanitarianism and material interests. In this point, the correlation between the issue of slavery and the discussion about the justification of the imperial policy could be found. During the critical moments of the American Revolution, critics of the imperial policy as well as proponents of the British constitution found a means to assert their moral superiority in antislavery discourse. This shows political expediency of antislavery arguments; attacks on slavery could serve a range of purposes as a rhetorical weapon to support particular opinions.

19세기 전반 영국과 미국의 대서양 노예무역 억제정책과 도덕자본(Moral Capital)의 국제정치

이 연구의 목적은 18세기 말부터 19세기 중반까지의 영국과 미국의 해외 노예무역 억제정책을 고찰하는 것이다. 2000년대에 들어 18세기 말 미국 독립혁명이라는 배경 속에서 대서양 노예무역 폐지운동의 시작을 고찰하는 연구들이 주목을 받았다. 이러한 설명은 노예무역 폐지운동 시작의 타이밍에 관한 질문에 답을 주며, 동시에 이 운동의 과정에서 반노예제 담론을 주장한 사람들에게 도덕적 위신이 더해지는 과정을 설명한 점에서 새로운 면모를 보였다. 그러나 18세기 말 미국 독립혁명의 배경 속에서 도덕자본의 형성을 강조하는 설명은 도덕자본 형성의 시기와 적용영역이 확대되어 설명되었을때 더 종합적인 서술이 될 수 있다. 여러 증거들은 미국 독립전쟁 기간에 개인 혹은 집단적 차원에서 반노예제 담론이 도덕자본으로 사용되었을뿐 아니라 1807년 이후 양국의 대외정책에서도 유사한 상황이 전개되었음을 암시하고 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 도덕자본의 형성과정을 노예무역폐지법안 통과 이후 시기의 영국과 미국의 해외 노예무역 정책을 비교 및 고찰해 보고자 한다. This research scrutinizes policies of the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade in Britain and the United States from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. Since the early 2000s, several studies which focus on the rise of the abolitionist movement in the context of the American Revolution have received attention. These explanations give partial answers to the questions about the timing of the antislavery movement and break fresh ground in the debate of abolitionists’ motivation beyond the dichotomy between morality and material interests; during the revolutionary period, attacks on slavery could serve a range of purposes in dealing with imperial policies. However, to get a more comprehensive interpretation, it is worth expanding the timing of the formation of moral capital and its scope of application. Much evidence suggests that the antislavery discourse became transformed into moral capital in the field of international politics beyond a personal and group level, even after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807. This research will analyze the formative process of moral capital through comparing the Anglo-American policies of the suppression of the slave trade in the post-revolutionary era.

1772년 영국 서머셋 재판(The Somerset Case) 판결의 실제와 대중적 이미지 연구

본 연구는 1772년 서머셋 판결의 실재 내용과 그것에 대한 대중의 이해 사이에 간극이 발생한 이유를 고찰하고, 그것이 반노예제 운동의 발전에 담당한 역할을 분석하려는 시도이다. 서머셋 판결은 1770년대까지 영국 법원이 명확히 답을 하지 못한 두 가지 이슈, 즉 주인이 노예에 대해 가지는 권리의 성격과 노예제의 합법성에 관한 질문에 권위 있는 법적판단을 내린 점에서 역사적 의미가 있다. 그러나 그것이 재해석되는 과정속에서 판결을 내린 당사자의 의도와 다르게 이해되고 또 그렇게 이해된 바가 또다시 반노예제 담론 발전에 영향을 준 점에서도 그 의의가 찾아져야 한다. 판결문의 실제 내용과 대중적 이해의 간극은 일차적으로는 판결문 자체가 담고 있는 반노예제적 요소 때문에 발생하였다. 그리고 또한 이 판결의 반노예제적 요소를 강조한 몇 개의 법률분석이 시간이 흐름에 따라 이 사건에 대한 지배적인 해석으로 자리 잡게 된 것도 중요한 배경이 되었다. 맨스필드가 내린 법적 판단에서 노예의 권리 보호는 상당히 소극적인 것이었다. 하지만 역사 속의 많은 문서들이 그러하듯이 그의 판결문 또한 원작자의 의도에 억매이지 않고 곧 대중에게 다양한 의미로 이해되는 독립된 생명체가 되었다. 이러한 사례는 역사적 사실의 실제 내용뿐 아니라 대중의 인식 속에 수용된 내용 또한 역사 발전과정에 중요한 함의를 가진다는 것을 다시 한 번 일깨워 주고 있다. This study scrutinizes the space between a written judgement of the Somerset case and people’s understanding of it. It also analyzes the reasons why this difference arose and their contributions to the development of the antislavery discourses. The Somerset case has been conceived significant as it answered two main issues which the British courts had not replied yet until the 1770s: the nature of masters’ rights to slaves and legitimacy of slavery in Britain. However, it also has historical importance in that popular image of the ruling was quite different from Mansfield’s intention, but this perception still affects the developmental process of the antislavery movement. The gap between the actual contents of Mansfield’s decision and its popular image is mainly caused by the antislavery features of the document. Legal commentaries which emphasized the factors against slavery in this paper became prevalent and it also played an important role in widening this gap. Like many other historical documents, the ruling of the Somerset case became a living thing, independent from its original meaning and was accepted with diverse intentions and used by people for various purposes. This reflects that imagined reality as well as historical reality can affect the direction of the historical development at the same time.

연구논문 : 영제국의 위기와 노예무역 폐지운동과 도덕개혁 운동의 결합, 1787-1807

이 논문은 그동안 종합적으로 이해되지 못했던 노예무역 폐지운동과 도덕개혁을 연결 지어 설명하려는 시도로서, 이는 18세기 말 영국 복음주의 정치가들이 궁극적으로 추구했던 바에 대한 고찰이기도 하다. 18세기 말 미국 독립혁명부터 시작하여 19세기 초까지 영국이 겪었던 일련의 국가적 위기 상황은 반노예제 운동이 담론과 사고의 영역을 넘어 정치적 실천주의와 결합하게 되는 배경이자 영국 헌정질서를 지키기 위해 사회 분위기를 새롭게 하려는 도덕개혁 운동이 시작되는 상황으로서 역할 하였다. 제국의 위기국면에서, 복음주의자들의 반노예제 운동은 도덕담론과 결합하여 국가 전반에 대한 도덕개혁 운동으로 발전하였다. 복음주의 정치가들이 반노예제 운동과 연계하여 도덕개혁을 추진한 것은 일면 혁명이후 상황이 가져다 준 도덕성의 위기에 대한 응전이었다. 또한 반노예제 운동은 그 자체로 도덕개혁을 완수하기 위한 최선의 방법 중 하나로 보였다. 이런 의미에서 18세기 말의 두 운동은 서로 밀접히 결합되어 있었다. 18세기 말에 영국 복음주의 정치가들은 단순히 노예제를 공격하고 하층민의 악행을 통제하는 것을 넘어 영국 헌정체제를 보호하기 위해 새로운 사회적 분위기를 만들려는 큰 그림을 그리고 있었다. This research attempts to give a comprehensive reassessment of the British antislavery movement considering its relation to the reformation of manners and morals in the late eighteenth century. It scrutinizes what British antislavery activists ultimately pursued through these great missions. During the imperial crisis caused by the American Revolution, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic War, the antislavery movement became different to attempts in the past, in that it went beyond only words, and tried to put them into political action. This was also conducive to the rise of the moral reformation as an attempt to protect the imperial system. In the years of crisis, evangelical abolitionism was united with morality and developed into part of the national moral reformation. The intense effort of evangelicals to reform morality, combined with antislavery, was a response to the moral challenge of the Revolution. The movement for the abolition of the slave trade was also seen as the best route to moral reformation, to promote national dignity after the Revolution. In this sense, these movements were closely related to each other. In the late eighteenth century British evangelical politicians were picturing the creation of a new social environment going beyond merely attacking slavery and suppressing the vice among the poor, protecting the principles of the British constitution.

1783년 종(Zong)호 재판의 실제와 역사적 의의

본 연구는 1783년에 있었던 두 번의 종호 사건 관련 재판의 내용을 살펴보고, 그것을 통해 종호 판결이 노예무역 폐지운동의 역사 안에서 감당한 역할을 재평가하려 한다. 이를 위해 우선 1781년에 일어난 종호 사건의 배경을 관찰하고 이 학살이 도덕적 비판 및 보험법규의 침해 여부와 관련된 다양한 이슈들이 뒤섞인 사건이었음을 보일 것이다. 두 번째로는 종호 재판의 진행 과정을 분석하여, 선주들이 노예를 살해할 만한 ‘절대적 필요성’을 주장한 것에 대항하여 보험회사가 인간성 담론을 제시하는 과정을 설명하고, 그것이 재판의 양상을 어떻게 변화시켰는지 주목할 것이다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 종호 판결의 내용이 노예무역 폐지운동의 발흥에 끼친 직간접적인 영향을 고찰해 볼 것이다. 이는 종호 사건과 판결을 영국 반노예제 운동사 안에 이전과 다른 위치에 재배치하는 시도가 될 것이다. This study scrutinizes two trials of the Zong massacre in 1783 and examines what role they played in the rise of the abolitionist movements. For this purpose, this study, firstly, will observe a wider context of this historical event and show its complicated features which consist of moral and legal disputes. Secondly, this research will analyze legal proceedings concerning the Zong massacre and explain how the insurers countered “absolute necessity” discourse of the ship owners with the argument of “humanity of slaves”, showing how this assumed a new aspect in the court. Lastly, this study will parse the content of the written judgement of this case and reconsider its multiple impacts on the initial phase of the antislavery movement. Through these tasks, this research will shed new light on the Zong massacre and its trials within the history of the British antislavery movement.

경성제국대학 부속도서관 내 영문 역사장서의 구성분석 연구

최근 식민주의 관련 연구들은 강대국의 식민지배를 문화적 지배의 확립 과정에 대입하여 파악하는 경향이 있는데, 이러한 문화적 헤게모니 형성의 대표적인 재현 공간으로 제시되는 곳이 바로 ‘식민지 문서고’(Colonial Archives)이다. 본 연구는 그 대표적 기관 중 하나인 경성제대 부속도서관이 식민주의 지적담론의 수용 및 확산 과정에서 보인 복잡성과 의외성의 단면을, 영어 역사서의 구성분석을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 부속도서관의 영어 역사장서 구성은 장서의 구매 방식, 학과 교육과의 연관성, 대학 내 역사 연구와의 연계성을 고려할 때 종합적으로 이해될 수 있다. 그러나 이와 관련된 자료들은 현재 온전히 남아 있지 않고, 전달하는 정보의 양도 제한된 점에서 근본적인 한계를 지닌다. 결국 영어 역사장서 구성의 특징을 이해하기 위해서는 목록전체를 전수 조사하여 양적, 질적 분석을 해야 할 필요성이 제기된다. 영어 역사서를 시대, 지리적 범위, 주제, 키워드에 기준에 따라 분류한 결과, 기본적으로 제국대학이 추구한 보편적 교양주의 경향이 드러난다. 그러나 여러 사료들은 부속도서관의 지적담론 수용 방식이 일관되지 않았으며, 보편적 교양주의의 덮개 아래에서도 시대와 지역에 따라 식민당국의 관심사가 편향되고 특화되어 있었음을 보여준다. 이는 근본적으로 제국의 정책이 일사불란한 것이 아니었고, 모순되는 다양한 요구들의 총합체였기 때문이었다. 영어 역사서의 구성은 식민지 대학도서관 안에서 식민주의 담론이 갈등, 순응, 저항의 과정을 거쳐 의도치 않은 모습으로 수용되던 모습의 단면을 드러내고 있다. In the past few decades, studies on colonialism have contextualized European colonialism within the process for building cultural hegemony in colonies. They also present ‘the colonial archives" as representational spaces of cultural domination. This research concentrates on history books in English collected by the Keijo Imperial University Library, a typical ‘colonial archive" and scrutinizes how this institute played a role in the importation of colonial discourse. The typical characteristics of the history collection in English of the university library can be understood more thoroughly with closer scrutiny over purchase channel of the resource collection, educational system of the History Department and research trend within the Keijo Imperial University. However, the data from relevant sources is quite limited in terms of both quality and quantity and thus, the list of the History collection in English should be totally inspected with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A categorization of the resource collection of the history books in English according to spatial and temporal characteristics, emphasizes universal culuralism which Japanese imperial universities pursued. However, much evidence suggests that the university library did not consistently accepted discourse of colonialism and universal culturalism affects the formative process of the library collection unevenly. It is mainly because of inconsistent demands of imperial policies. The composition of the history collection in English shows a cross section of the process in which discourse of colonialism was imported with a conflict, resulting in unintended consequences in the colonial university library.

[영국] 시련 속의 전진: 2019~2020년 영국사 연구동향

This paper analyzes research results in British history published during the period from 2019 to 2020. In this period, the number of publications has decreased, mainly due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and a generation change in the Korean academic circle. The Covid-19 hit the traditional system of the research production: “presentation at the conference - application to the academic journals - publication”. The retirement of senior researchers also takes an important part of this trend as their publications have outnumbered those of juniors for many years. However we can still find some positive features; writings of rising scholars who recently got their doctoral degrees relieve shortage of the publication of research; new video conference services revitalize academic activities and suggest how to keep academic production accessible to the public in the post-Covid era. This paper has found much vivid discussion in the areas of politics, social economy, culture and religion, empire and transnational history and gender. Many scholars have brought good results in these areas. However they need to find suggestive subjects in more diverse periods beyond ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ eras. They should also try to link their specialties to bigger issues of British and world history and view their subjects in the broader historiographical context.
