경성제국대학 부속도서관 내 영문 역사장서의 구성분석 연구 = An Analytical Study on the Collection of the History Books in English of the Keijo Imperial University Library

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 식민주의 관련 연구들은 강대국의 식민지배를 문화적 지배의 확립 과정에 대입하여 파악하는 경향이 있는데, 이러한 문화적 헤게모니 형성의 대표적인 재현 공간으로 제시되는 곳이 바로 ‘식민지 문서고’(Colonial Archives)이다. 본 연구는 그 대표적 기관 중 하나인 경성제대 부속도서관이 식민주의 지적담론의 수용 및 확산 과정에서 보인 복잡성과 의외성의 단면을, 영어 역사서의 구성분석을 통해 살펴보고자 한다.
부속도서관의 영어 역사장서 구성은 장서의 구매 방식, 학과 교육과의 연관성, 대학 내 역사 연구와의 연계성을 고려할 때 종합적으로 이해될 수 있다. 그러나 이와 관련된 자료들은 현재 온전히 남아 있지 않고, 전달하는 정보의 양도 제한된 점에서 근본적인 한계를 지닌다. 결국 영어 역사장서 구성의 특징을 이해하기 위해서는 목록전체를 전수 조사하여 양적, 질적 분석을 해야 할 필요성이 제기된다.
영어 역사서를 시대, 지리적 범위, 주제, 키워드에 기준에 따라 분류한 결과, 기본적으로 제국대학이 추구한 보편적 교양주의 경향이 드러난다. 그러나 여러 사료들은 부속도서관의 지적담론 수용 방식이 일관되지 않았으며, 보편적 교양주의의 덮개 아래에서도 시대와 지역에 따라 식민당국의 관심사가 편향되고 특화되어 있었음을 보여준다. 이는 근본적으로 제국의 정책이 일사불란한 것이 아니었고, 모순되는 다양한 요구들의 총합체였기 때문이었다. 영어 역사서의 구성은 식민지 대학도서관 안에서 식민주의 담론이 갈등, 순응, 저항의 과정을 거쳐 의도치 않은 모습으로 수용되던 모습의 단면을 드러내고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the past few decades, studies on colonialism have contextualized European colonialism within the process for building cultural hegemony in colonies. They also present ‘the colonial archives" as representational spaces of cultural domination. This research concentrates on history books in English collected by the Keijo Imperial University Library, a typical ‘colonial archive" and scrutinizes how this institute played a role in the importation of colonial discourse.
The typical characteristics of the history collection in English of the university library can be understood more thoroughly with closer scrutiny over purchase channel of the resource collection, educational system of the History Department and research trend within the Keijo Imperial University. However, the data from relevant sources is quite limited in terms of both quality and quantity and thus, the list of the History collection in English should be totally inspected with both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
A categorization of the resource collection of the history books in English according to spatial and temporal characteristics, emphasizes universal culuralism which Japanese imperial universities pursued. However, much evidence suggests that the university library did not consistently accepted discourse of colonialism and universal culturalism affects the formative process of the library collection unevenly. It is mainly because of inconsistent demands of imperial policies. The composition of the history collection in English shows a cross section of the process in which discourse of colonialism was imported with a conflict, resulting in unintended consequences in the colonial university library.
