Surgical purpose in the management of syringomyelia is to obtain accurate and patent cavitoarachnoid communication with minimal neural damage. We are reporting two cases of syringomyelia which were treated with a silicon tubing and tantalum wire. The m3rit of radiopaque and less traumatic tantalum wire is emphasized.

We have seen a primitive glioma which can be regarded as ependymobiastoma arising at the left frontal lobe of four-year-old boy. He has complained of excitement, hyperesthesia, mild incomplete paralysis of the left lower extremity for 1½ months, and also incontinence of urine and stool was complained. The signs of incresed intracranial pressure such as papilledema and separation of suture line were noted. Brain scanning showed tumor mass at the left frontal lobe, and which was revealed to be vascular tumor on carotid angiogram and delta wave was found at those area by electroencephalogram. Operative findings were that the tumor was hemorrhagie vascular mass showing partly cystic and necrotic in appearance, not bulged above outer surface and not connected with ventricle. The tumor mass measured 6×5×4㎝ of which cut surface was pinkish white and focal neurotic areas were also seen. On microscopic examination the tumor was composed of relatively uniform primitive glial cells and the tumor cells arranged in perivascular area forming multiple layers while other region showed well formed tubules. Fibrillated cytoplasmic process between central vessel and glial cells that could be seen in matured ependymoma was not identified.

Numerous studies had been made about infected scalp wound regarding suture methods, suture materials, and selection of antibiotics for prevention of scalp infection. Very few reports had been summarized infected scalp wound in reviewing of recent Korean and English literatures. In the last 4 months, we had many infected scalp patients in this hospital. Here, we have made conclusion that simple wire suture and antibiotics according to sensitivity test give best result for infected scalp wound.
Vinblastine이 백서 배양신경세포에 미치는 세포독성에 관한 연구

To investigate the cytotoxicity of vinblastine for cultured neonatal rat neurons and astrocytes, inverted phase contrast microscopic study was performed for the primary cultured neurons and astrocytes in the media containing various concentrations of vinblastine. The results are as follows : 1. At a concentration of 1 X 10^-4mM vinblastine, neurites and fasciculi of neurons were reduced in number and showed bead were broken appearance. Cell clusters tend to float by the detachment from the culture surface and to form large aggregated cell masses. At a concentration of 3X 10^-4mM, degenerative changes of the neurons were markedly enhanced. Furthermore, dissociation and dispersion of dead neurons from the cell aggregates, and pyknosis and karyorrhexis of neurons were noted. 2. At a concentration of 5 X 10^-4mM vinblastine, astrocytes decreased in number and showed cytoplasmic vacuolization. At a concentration of 1 X 10^-3mM , these regressive changes of astrocytes were more pronounced and also astrocytes showed severe shrinkage and granulation. Above results indicate that vinblastine has the cytotoxic effect on cultured neurons and astrocytes of neonatal rat brain.
몇가지 항암제 (Adriamycin, Cytosine arabinoside 및 Vinblastine)가 생쥐 배양 섬유모세포에 미치는 세포독성에 관한 형태학적 연구

To investigate to cytotoxic effects of adriamycin, cytosine arabinoside and vinblastine on cultured mouse fibroblasts, colorimetric assays of neutral red (NR) and tetrazolium MTT, protein content and electron microscopic studies were performed. Adriamycin, cytosine arabinoside and vinblastine were highly toxic by showing that values of NR_50 and MTT_50 of each drug were lower than a concentration of 100 μM, respectively. The amount of total protein in anticancer drug-treated groups were less than those of the control. The number of cells grown in anticancer drug-treated groups were less than those of the control. Electron microscopic study showed that fibroblasts treated with adriamycin showed increment of lysosome and vacuoles as well as cisternal dilatation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and cytosine arabinoside treated cells had nucleus with fragmental heterochroma-tin, swollen mitochondria and many vacuoles, and vinblastine treated cells contained elongated and often lobulated nucleus and many cytoplasmic vacuoles. These results suggest that adriamycin, cytosine arabinoside and vinblastine have severe cytotoxic effects on the cultured mouse fibroblasts by inhibition of protein synthesis and structural changes of cell organelles.
Mitomycin C가 白鼠의 纖維母細胞에 미치는 細胞毒性에 關한 硏究

Present study was carried out to investigate the cytotoxicity of mitomycin C in cultured rat fibroblasts. The colorimetric assays of neutral red(NR) and tetrazolium MTT and also the measurement of the rate of DNA synthesis and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) analysis were performed in cells cultured in the media containing various concentrations of mitomycin C. The results are as follows ; 1. The uptake ability of NR was decreased dose-dependently and NR_90 and NR_50 values of mitomycin C were 0.5 μg/㎖ and 2.3 μg/㎖ respectively. 2. Mitomycin C induced the dose-dependent decrease of the activity of mitochondrial succinic dehydrogenase and MTT_90, and MTT_50 values were 0.7 μg/㎖ and 3.4 μg/㎖, respectively. 3. Mitomycin C inhibited DNA synthesis dose-dependently and the rates of DNA synthesis at concentrations of mitomycin C, 0.5 μg/㎖ (NR_90) and 10^-3μg/㎖ were 2 % and 50 % of the control. 4. Frequency of sister chromatid exchange increased dose-dependently. From above results, it suggests that mitomycin C induced the DNA damage at below concentrations which dose not cause cytotoxicity as determined by NR and MTT assays.
선천성 접형골 결손에 의한 맥동성 안구돌충증과 겸한 총상 신경섬유종 : 1례 보고

A case of unilateral pulsating exophthalmos due to defective development of the sphenoid bone with plexiform neurofibroma was reported. There were missing of orbital plate of the frontal bone, lesser and great wing of the sphenoid, and lacrymal plate of the ethmoid bone. Middle fossa became deepening accompaning with thining of temporal bone, and the tip of the temporal lobe was covered by tremendously dilated subarachnoid spaces with thick membranes. There were diffuse neurofibromatosis and plesiform aeurofibroma resulted in elephantiasis of the lids. The skull bone defect was covered with Resin after removal of the plexiform neurofibroma. The patient was improved.
