내면적 갈등의 분석 : A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 에서
柳明佑 호남대학교 1988 호남대학교 학술논문집 Vol.9 No.-
One of the best novels by James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has already been defined by many critics as an autobiographical bildungsroman. So the story consists of a series of episodic experiences. What interests us most is that this experimental novel is written without any cause and effect plot which most of 19th century novels have adopted. This thesis is to define what is the underlying conflict, which can be said to have a strong influence on the growing mind of the hero, Stephen Dedalus. The story does not move according to the explicit conflicts, but goes on the ground of reflections and reactions against his surrounding and society. Considering life is a series of choices, it is very important to clarify what is the base of the choices of the heros actions. no logical connection can be found in the episodic stories without checking out the conflicting forces even if it is a series of episodcs. James Joyce, one of the innovators in the modern novel commanded several new techniques, such as the method of stream of consciousness and epiphany. Mythical motives and symbols are used in this novel to give a meaningful unity to the whole structure. The cross connection of such images as birds cows and waters is very effective in expressing the main theme of the novel without any cause and effect plot. The main inner conflict lies between the piety of Stephen's belief and the youthful passion. His religious life involves him in many troubles with girl friends, aunt and even his mother. Overwhelming catholicism is the base against which he reacts to choose a way of becoming an artist. His sinfulness from catholic education and free will to become a creative astist are the main motive of the hero's actions. The two confliction forces are the main source of the struggles of Stephen Dedalus.
小說의 讀者와 大衆性 小考 : 18세기 英國小說 발생을 中心으로
柳明佑 湖南大學校 1990 호남대학교 학술논문집 Vol.11 No.1
The main concern of this thesis is about making a small base for explaining the relationship between readers and works. A new literary genre has arisen in accordance with many literary and social conditions. The great flowering of the Elizabethan drama was due to the appearance of a large audience interested in drama. As they were already well versed in the conventions and stories of the Shakespearean dramas, they needed more interesting and changed form and contents. The 18th century novel readers, who belonged to a new class wanted to be satisfied with new genre of literature as their former ruling class did. They were interested in their own picture and read their own stories expressed in a new genre. Therefore a new literary genre has arisen in popularity of a large audience or readers. The popularity in literature is an important fact in genre criticism. Without studying the social situation of readers and works a new genre can not be understood fully in its own value.
20세기 영소설의 內面的 自我探索의 길 : Conrad, Joyce, Woolf의 경우에서
柳明佑 湖南大學校 1987 호남대학교 학술논문집 Vol.8 No.1
On the threshhold of the 20th century we can find three outstanding novelists who are different from the former writers in many respects. Joseph Conrad, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf tried to open an new way to grasp the reality of human minds. So the major characteristics of their main themes and new techniques are the objects of my study and the similarities and differences among them are also to he under examination. The three writers were all absorbed in thracing the inner reality of one's self and the problem of isolation and escape. Joseph Conrad's hero, Lord Jim suddenly meets "the hidden self" at the moment of jumping down onto the life boat from his steamship, Patna, which was loaded with more than 800 passengers. he suddenly finds the immoral and ugly self and tries to escape from his old society which seem to find facults with his deeds. His conflicts arise from the confrontation of the two selves. And James Joyce's literary alter ego, Stephen Dedalus endeavors to escape from the labyrinth of the traditional society and catholic church to the road of becoming an artist. For he is isolated from his frends adn societies he must find his own self to become a great writer. Meanwhile Mr. & Mrs. Ramsay runs away from the personal and unique world to find an outer general world in the lighthouse. Virginia Woolf tried to catch the hidden truth of the fleeting moments of ones inner world, which can unavoidably he expressed in her beautiful style. The three writers are similar in the quest of the inner reality of one's self. They are all eager to dig out the hidden truth of life from the grifle happenings of life. Though the three are different from one another in the manner of dealing the materials, their themes are similar in a sense to each other, For the plot and chracterization, which were the major elements of the traditional novels of the 19th century, are next to the theme presentation and helping elements for the revelation of the main theme.
