A tidal current turbine is designed and analyzed numerically by using blade element momentum theory. The rated power has a limitation because the diameter of the tidal current turbine cannot exceed the depth of sea water. This study investigates a horizontal axis tidal-current turbine with a rated power of 500 kW. NACA-6 series laminar foil shape is used for basic airfoil along the blade span. The distributions of chord length and twist angle along the blade span are obtained from the hydrodynamic optimization procedure. Prandtl‘s tip loss correction and angle of attack correction considering the three-dimensional effect are applied for this study. The power coefficient curve shows maximum peak at the rated tip speed ratio of 6.0, and the maximum torque coefficient is developed at the tip speed ratio of 4. The drag coefficient reaches about 0.85 at the design tip speed ratio.

Discrete noise signals from a small scale tactical unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) propeller were predicted numerically using time domain approach. Two-bladed 29 inch propeller in diameter and 150 kgf in gross weight were used for main parameters of the UAV based on the actual size of the similar scale vehicle. Panel method and Farassat formula A1 were adopted for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analysis respectively. Time domain signals of both thickness and loading noises were transformed into frequency domain to analyze the discrete noise characteristics. Directivity pattern in a plane perpendicular to the rotating disc plane and attenuation of noise intensity according to double distance were also presented.

In this study, a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes simulation around Wido Island was performed to analyze the wake effect behind an island. A 10 m/s wind speed and pressure boundary conditions were assigned for the inflow and outflow boundary conditions, respectively. Wido Island was modeled using GIS data. A prevailing wind from the north-northwest direction was determined based on QuikSCAT satellite data. A computational domain of 40 km × 20 km × 5 km covering Wido Island was applied for numerical analysis. Sixty points were specified to extract the wind speed data. A wind speed profile inside the atmospheric boundary layer was compared with a wind profile using a simple power law. It turns out that the wake effect decreases the mean wind speed by 5% more or less, which corresponds to a 14% decrease in wind energy. Thus, the installation of a meteorological mast or development of a wind farm behind Wido Island is not highly recommended.

In this study, wind loads exerted on the offshore wind turbine rotor in parked condition were predicted with variations of wind speeds, yaw angles, azimuth angle, pitch angles, and power of the atmospheric boundary layer profile. The calculated wind loads using blade element theorem were compared with those of estimated aerodynamic loads for the simplified blade shape. Wind loads for an NREL’s 5 MW scaled offshore wind turbine rotor were also compared with those of NREL’s FAST results for more verification. All of the 6-component wind loads including forces and moments along the three axis were represented on a non-rotating coordinate system fixed at the apex of rotor hub. The calculated wind loads are applicable for the dynamic analysis of the wind turbine system, or obtaining the over-turning moment at the foundation of support structure for wind turbine system.
