      • 하이퍼큐브 시스템에서 데이타 비대칭성을 고려한 향상된 병렬 결합 알고리즘

        본 논문에서는 하이퍼큐브 시스템에서 결합 연산을 효율적으로 처리할 수 있는 향상된 병렬 결합 알고리즘을 제안한다. 새로운 알고리즘은 릴레이션 R을 처리함에 있어 하이퍼큐브 구조에 적합한 방송 알고리즘을 사용함으로써 하이퍼큐브 구조에 최적인 병렬 결합 알고리즘을 보이게 된다. 또한 병렬화 성능의 최대 주안점인 부하균등 문제와 데이타 불균형으로 인한 과부하 문제를 완전히 해결하고 결집 효과의 특성을 수용함으로써 전체 성능이 향상된다. 새로운 알고리즘은 해쉬를 기반으로 하는 알고리즘에서 구현하기 어려운 non-equijoin 연산을 쉽게 구현할 수 있다는 장점을 가지며, 비용 모형을 통해 분석한 결과 기존의 병렬 결합 알고리즘들에 비해 보다 나은 성능을 나타냄을 확인한다. In this paper, we propose advanced parallel join algorithm to efficiently process join operation on hypercube systems. This algorithm uses a broadcasting method in processing relation R which is compatible with hypercube structure. Hence, we can present optimized parallel join algorithm for that hypercube structure. The proposed algorithm has a complete solution of two essential problems - load balancing problem and data skew problem - in parallelization of join operation. In order to solve these problems, we made good use of the characteristics of clustering effect in the algorithm. As a result of this, performance is improved on the whole system than existing algorithms. Moreover. new algorithm has an advantage that can implement non-equijoin operation easily which is difficult to be implemented in hash based algorithm. Finally, according to the cost model analysis. this algorithm showed better performance than existing parallel join algorithms.

        A Poetics toward the “Genuinely Created World”: The Notion of the Author-Reader in John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman

        A progeny of the age of Robbe-Grillet and Roland Barthes as it is, John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman invites us to move on from the early critique of the author as God. Taking afresh the question of the author dramatized and theorized at once in the novel, therefore, the paper aims to illustrate how the novel reclaims the author without demoting the role of the reader that postmodern critics have brought to light. Elucidating first why and how the novel employs the conflicting identities of the narrator/author, and then the ways in which the novel’s meta-fictional narrative draws our attention to the notion of reading histories, the paper argues that the novel finally calls for a return to history which should bind the author, but, at the same time, point toward a new direction to open up the new possibilities in the place left empty after the ‘death of the author.’ What The French Lieutenant’s Woman opens up, the paper concludes, is a discursive place that the novel illuminates as a “genuinely created world” where the characters as human agents make fiction out of, in Ricoeur’s term, “what might have been” (81) in history.

        The “Saving Power” of Modern Art: Art and Technology in William Blake’s Prophetic Works

        One of the common aspects of British Romanticism assumed by scholars is its apparent opposition to the technological changes that had been sweeping over England since the mid-eighteenth century. Romantic writers, on the one hand, bitterly criticized the cultural and material conditions that modern technology created for the (re)production of art. On the other hand, however, they were acutely aware of, what Greenberg calls as the “fundamental ironies,” of their criticism since both the role and the notion of art and artists they promoted were essentially tied to how they dealt with the question of the material medium, the printed book, in and through which they were to communicate themselves with contemporary readers. By examining William Blake’s multifaceted images of Urizenic figures in his prophetic works, this study attempts to identify the ways in which Blake deliberately uses the very logic of modern technology in order to explore the double visions of modern art. This paper argues that Blake’s criticism of modern technology is in fact his artistic probing of the “saving power” of modern art that is inherent within the nature of modern technology. The double nature of Urizenic images in Blake’s visual and verbal texts analogously shows the very process that the “danger” of modern technology transforms itself into the “saving power.” Blake’s insight into the material condition of his time stems from his awareness of this double vision of modern technology, through which he envisions an artist’s new furnace to forge the new “saving power” of modern art.

        Literary and Historical Women Readers in Eighteenth- and Early Nineteenth-Century England and Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote

        Examining the cultural and literary trope of the female Quixote in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England, this study attempts to identify the ways in which Charlotte Lennox and other contemporary writers reflect and mediate the period’s prevailing views of women’s reading practices. It also traces how the Quixotic reader was transformed into the gendered trope and locates Lennox’s work within the tradition of English sister Quixotes. Lennox’s pioneering interrogation about the nature of her heroine’s Quixotism not only challenges the conduct book’s normative view of female reading, but also illuminates the nature of reading’s double potentials for women readers. Lennox’s work thus serves as a revealing reference to later female Quixotes in English fiction, as they all share the fate with their historical readers who were then living and discursive participants in the period’s cultural battle over how to read.

        디지털 문학연구의 탐색과 적용: 『엠마』의 소셜네트워크 분석

        Applying Social Network Analysis (SNA) to Jane Austen’s Emma, this paper offers a simple case study of digital literary study, through which an exemplary process of computing literary works can be illustrated from the perspective of a traditional literary critic. The main discussion proceeds with the four steps to detail the extraction process of character networks from Emma and the result: the specific goal, preprocessing of data, the working concepts (including centrality) and the packages used for the analysis, and the examination of the results with visualization. The SNA was conducted with a specific aim to see whether or, to what extent, its result corresponds to the main thesis of the paper that had been published by the same author in 2016: Miss Bates’ role and position as a “community bridge” or a “gossipmonger” in Highbury society. For detection of the character interactions, the study adopted the working notion of conversational network of both direct and indirect speeches, together with explicit mentions of characters during conversations. The result showed that Miss Bates’ centralities within the computed networks are highly relevant with the critical argument presented in the 2016 paper, although some aspects of the outputs demand critical interpretations. As a way for a literary criticism to converse with digital methodologies, the last discussion reviews the potentials and limits of digital literary study in terms of the SNA.

        앨리스 워커(Alice Walker)가 버려진 무덤을 찾아 비명을 세운 상 징적 사건을 시작으로, 조라 닐 허스턴(Zora Neale Hurston)은 긴 세 월의 비평적 무관심을 뒤로 하고 미국 문학의 정전작가로 자리매김한 다. 1970년대와 80년대를 거치며 허스턴의 생애와 작품에 대한 연구 또한 양적으로나 질적으로 증가해 왔으며, 그 중에서도 그녀의 대표 작 『그들의 눈은 신을 보고 있었네』(Their Eyes Were Watching God) 은 허스턴 연구에서 핵심적 부분을 차지한다. 본 연구는 본격적인 작 품론에 앞서 허스틴 비평의 변천, 특히 허스틴에 대한 당대 할렘 르네상스 지식인들과 문인들의 혹독한 비평과 이후 (흑인) 페미니즘 비평 가들을 중심으로 한 재평가를 비교함으로써, 그러한 허스틴 비평 내 부에 복잡하게 얽혀있는 인종정치적, 젠더정치적 작동 기제를 검토한 다. 할렘 르네상스 지식인들과 문인들이 추구했던 미국 흑인의 삶에 대한 문학적 재현이나 진정한 흑인상을 비껴가는 허스턴의 독특한 문 학세계는, 흑인 여성의 눈으로 미국 흑인의 삶을 들여다 보되, 한 편으 로는 인종과 젠더가 얽혀 작동하는 흑인 공동체 내부의 이중적 모순 을, 다른 한 편으로는 그들의 풍성한 문화 유산과 건강성을 가감 없이 그려낸다는 점에서 현대 흑인(여성) 문학의 백미라 할만하다. 『그들의 눈』의 작품 논의는 세 번의 결혼과 귀향으로 이루어진 여주 인공 제니(Janie)의 ‘퀘스트’(quest)를 중심으로 이루어지며, 제니의 꿈과 좌절이 당대의 인종과 젠더의 사회, 역사적 문맥과 뗄 수 없는 관 계에 놓여있음을 확인하는 과정으로 구성된다. 작품에 구현된 제니의 여정은, 제니의 할머니 네니(Nanny)가 흑인 여성의 운명을 진단하고 예언한 표현, “세상의 노새”를 세 남편과의 관계 속에서 체험하고, 극 복하는 과정이다. “노새”의 운명을 극복해 가는 제니의 여정은 낭만적 남녀관계의 꿈을 극복함으로써 이룬 독립과 자존감 뿐 아니라, 자신 의 삶을 이야기로 전달하는 서사적 성취에 의해 완성된다. 제니가 자 신의 인생담을 친구 피비(Pheoby)에게 들려주는 형식으로 이루어진 소설의 서사틀은 이야기에 감화되고 성장하는 피비를 통해 제니가 이 룬 서사적 힘의 상관물이자, 허스튼이 제니를 통해 흑인 여성의 이야 기를 독자들에게 전달하는 서사문학적 행위이다.

        Men and Their Professions in Jane Austen’s Novels

        Throughout her literary career, Jane Austen devoted much of her care to illuminate a variety of the standard that her male characters have about their work, providing us with an index to their personal and social merits, which in turn allows us to engage in judicious moral evaluation of her male characters. A man’s profession for Austen is where individual virtues and social responsibilities intersect, and the proximity between the two is the very test by which to judge whether he is a socially responsible and morally respectful person. Examining Austen's critical rethinking of ‘men in their work,’ therefore, this study aims to explore Austen's historical insight into the idea of the profession and its profound social implications as portrayed in her male characters. The question of the profession and its growing importance is led to a brief look into the wide-ranged changes in the social structure and the concomitant shift of the old gentlemanly ideal at the turn of the century. The profession has its long history evolved over more than a century in early modern England, and Jane Austen’s male characters illuminate the dynamics of the social and economic changes displayed in the term. Much discussed ‘unfeudal tone’ of Austen’s later novels comes from such changes depicted in Austen’s heroes as in George Knightley, Enmund Bertram and Frederick Wentworth who seem to depart from her earlier ones. In her representation of morally flawed landowners such as John Dashwood, Henry Crawford, and Sir Walter Elliot, moreover, Austen not only criticizes individual characters but also questions the moral basis of the social privileges they enjoy. Austen’s literary representation of the profession in its early conception serves as a “genesis” of the Victorian profession, but her insight goes even deeper to warn her contemporaries that the new idea needs vigorous reexamination tested against the old ideals.         “응급 원격수업”: 19세기 영문학 전공 교과목의 ‘온라인수업’ 변환 사례

        The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about unprecedented changes in the landscape of education across the world. Following the first few-weeks’ mass closures of educational institutions in March 2020, all the universities and colleges in Korea began the spring semester online. Nationwide switching to online during such a short period of time may have proved both our strength of IT infrastructure and operational effectiveness of all those involved in educational system, but the salient features of this instant transition in all levels of educational practices ask for shared on-going discussions about ‘pandemic’ pedagogy, especially as the threat of COVID-19 is now being ever greater. This study thus aims to be a part of such discussions, first, briefly examining the notions and approaches that the current emergency education compels for a deliberation, and then sharing the experience of the shift-to-online teaching of the Nineteenth-century English literature course. With a critical caution against rushed ideas of post-corona education, and also to draw attention to contextual appreciation for pandemic education, the paper takes on “emergency remote teaching” suggested as an alternative term by online education scholars, and goes on to scrutinize the “Film Narrative and English Literature” course implemented as such. Its focus is more on the major aspects of the modification in instructional design, operational strategies, and student supporting required for an asynchronous model of “emergency remote teaching,” rather than the course content, so that its context and process elements can be underlined.
