The article overviews current research on second language learning to provide some implications for Korean vocabulary education. First, the study reviews research about vocabulary size to discuss the starting point of vocabulary research. Previous vocabulary instruction research and vocabulary acquisition theory support the background theory for effective instruction and provide implications for the research area of Korean vocabulary education. I reviewed the selected reports that describe the current trend of vocabulary instruction research to explore the conflicting issues and to determine what the most effective method of instruction may be. The study also points out recent trends in vocabulary research of the Korean language compared to recent trends in second language vocabulary research. In spite of much research of vocabulary focused on the characteristics of Korean vocabulary and vocabulary instruction as effective activities, many empirical and theoretical studies are needed to answer the unsolved issues in Korean vocabulary research.
한국 대학에 재학 중인 재외동포의 한국어에 대한 인식 연구

본 연구는 한국 대학에 진학하여 한국 사회에 적응해 가면서 예전과 다른 언어 환경에 놓인 재외동포들이 어떻게 언어 정체성을 형성해 가고 있는가를 탐색한 연구이다. 먼저 설문조사를 실시하여 이들이 한국어에 대해 가지고 있는 태도와 한국어 능력을 조사하였다. 이들의 특성을 파악하기 위해 선행 연구가 이루어진 재미동포와 재남미동포 후세대들의 조사 결과와 비교하여 한국 거주 재외동포의 한국어에 대한 인식을 비교하였다. 다음으로 학습자들이 스스로 자신의 언어 생활을 돌아볼 수 있는 과제로서 자유롭게 언어 생활에 대한 작문을 실시하였고 이를 분석하였다. 이중언어 화자이며 한국어 계승어 학습자로서 이들은 한국 대학에서 학업을 하면서 한국어에 대한 긍정적인 생각과 부정적인 생각 사이에서 자신의 이미지를 형성해 나갔다. 학생에 따라 이중언어 사용에 대한 장점을 인식하고 자신을 유능한 사람으로 보는 경우와 한국 사회에서 한국어 능력의 부족에 대해 자신의 능력에 대한 부정적 감정을 느끼는 경우가 있었다. 대체로 이중언어 화자로서 자신의 정체성이 언어에 따라 달라지는 것을 스스로 깨닫고 그 안에서 자신의 정체성을 형성해 나간다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 설문조사와 쓰기 자료를 분석하여 수행되었기에 설문조사 결과가 실제로 느끼는 언어 사용 양상에 어떻게 반영되는지를 볼 수 있었다는 점에서 연구의 의의가 있다. 또한 재외동포들의 한국 대학 진학이 늘어나는 시점에서 이들이 한국어 사용에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 있는가를 파악할 수 있었다는 점에 있어 연구의 의의가 있다고 하겠다.

The purpose of this study is to exploring learner's factors in Korean vocabulary education. The characterists of learners factors are categorized by their first language, language proficiency, language institutes, and etc. To explore the learner's factors, this study focused on some experimental research about effectiveness of vocabulary teaching methods. This study selects 108 individaul master thesises which were investigated the effectiveness of teaching methods. These studies conducted to measure the achievement scores of two group – control and experimental groups. All participants in these studies are Korean language learners of different levels of language proficiency from various countries. To review of synthesizing of study results, meta-analsis are conducted caculating the effect sizes of each study using CMA package. The study results showed the vocabulary teaching methods are more effective for single language group(Chinese learners of Korean)rather than the mixed language group. Also, the beginners get a benefit from vocabulary teaching than advanced learners.
재미 동포와 재남미 동포의 언어 사용 양상에 대한 비교 분석 연구

This study aims to compare and analyze the language use patterns among Koreans in the Korean communities in North and South America. It is important to survey attitude, environment and use patterns concerning the Korean language in both groups to understand how the language is changing and transcending as a mother tongue. The survey data was collected in major residental locations of Koreans in the US, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. The analysis of topic related to language attitude and perception, language proficiency, and language use environment showed that Korean-South Americans were higher Korean proficiency than Korean-North Americans. Especially, in the case of the 2nd generation groups, the Korean-South Americans showed a stronger proficiency in the Korean language use. Korean immigrants in both areas have a immigrant history jointly, however, the current social, economic and educational systems and policies could affect the language choices and change of Korean immigrants in both areas. Based on the results of this study, the future use of Koreans are predicted in both areas.
한국어 교사의 이문화간 소통능력 구성요인에 대한 탐색적 연구

The present study attempts to explore the component factors of cross-cultural competence of Korean language instructors. Few research has ever been done to measure cross-cultural competence in the field of Korean language education as a secondary language for foreigners. Based on earlier studies of second language education, the study culled a number of factors to measure the instructor's competence to communicate Korean language education to foreign cultures. Four factors were extracted based on the survey results : individual attitude towards foreign culture, competence to analyze and knowledge of foreign culture, openness, and the ability to adapt in a global environment. The results showed that the instructor's teaching years would affect the instructor's knowledge and ability to analyze a foreign culture positively. In addition, the instructor's education level affected the instructor's knowledge and ability to analyze a foreign culture positively. The result suggested that the four factors may provide a basic measurement tool to measure Korean language instructors' cross-cultural competence. Korean language education should be extended in the context of cross-cultural interaction between instructors and students beyond mere language education. The self-awareness of cross-cultural competence of individuals and teacher-education programs for improving cross-cultural competence are needed for effective teaching in a multi-cultural classroom.
