Krabbe's disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hemiplegia, paraplegia, ataxia, cortical blindness, and peripheral neuropathy. This disease is caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme galactocerebroside β- galactosidase(GALC), resulting in demyelination of white matter of brain and peripheral nerve. We reported a 38-year- old female developed a slowly progressive weakness of lower extremities and gait disturbance since age of 10. Neurological examination revealed spastic weakness of both lower extremities, hyperactive deep tendon reflexes and in-trinsic muscle atrophy of both hands and feet. Electrophysiologic study showed uniform demyelinating sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy. T2-weighted brain MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) findings revealed symmetric high signal intensity along the bilateral corticospinal tract. The diagnosis of Krabbe's disease was confirmed by finding of markedly reduced GALC activity in leukocyte. We recommended to consider Krabbe's disease in the diagnosis of patients affecting both central and peripheral nervous system.

[ $LiCoO_2$ ] a cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries, was prepared using recycled $Co_3O_4$. First, the cobalt hydroxide powders were separated from waste WC-Co hard metal with acid-base chemical treatment, and then the impurities were eliminated by centrifuge method. Subsequently, $Co_3O_4$ powders were prepared by thermal treatment of resulting $Co(OH)_2$. By adding a certain amount of $Li_2CO_3$ and $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$, the $LiCoO_2$ was obtained by sintering for 10 h in air at $800^{\circ}C$. The synthesized $LiCoO_2$ particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis.
R&D 예비타당성조사에서의 편익 추정의 정형화 가능성에 관한 고찰

국가발전에 있어서 과학과 기술의 중요성이 확산되면서 연구개발(R&D)의 중요성이 높아지고 R&D 예산이 급격하게 증가하고 있다. 이에 따라 정부는 R&D 사업의 효율적인 추진을 위하여 정부 각 부처와 기관들이 요구하는 R&D 사업 계획에 대하여 타당성을 사전적으로 검증하고 예산 반영 여부를 결정하기 위하여 예비타당성조사를 2008년부터 광범위하게 실시하고 있다. R&D 사업은 시장변화와 불확실한 미래가치를 예측·적용해야 하는 어려움이 존재하여 예비타당성조사에서 정형화된 경제성 분석방법을 적용하기가 어렵다. 동일하거나 유사한 성격의 R&D 사업에 대한 편익 추정에 있어서도 연구자에 따라 상이한 측정 기준과 내용을 적용하는 경우가 빈번하게 나타나고 있다. 본 연구는 지난 5년 동안 수행되어 온 R&D 사업 예비타당성조사에 대한 사례분석을 통해 편익 추정 과정에서 적용된 측정 기준 및 내용의 정형화 가능성에 주목하고 있다. R&D 사업에 대한 예비타당성조사가 연구자의 전문적 식견에 의존함으로써 발생할 수 있는 편익 추정과정에서의 측정기준과 내용의 상이한 적용은 정부부처간의 갈등을 초래하고 예비타당성조사의 정당성 자체를 잃을 가능성이 있기 때문이다. R&D 편익 추정 과정에서 상이하게 적용되는 이슈들에 대하여 정형화 가능성에 대한 연구는 R&D 사업을 보다 정교하게 기획하고 예비타당성조사 과정에서의 객관성과 일관성 유지를 위한 실무적 노력에 큰 시사점을 제공한다.
요추수술실패 증후군 환자의 보행지표와 임상양상과의 상관관계

Objective: To analyze the relationship of clinical factors and gait parameters of patients with failed back surgery syndrome. Method: We investigated 25 male patients with back and /or lower limb pain who underwent lumbar spine operation. The following data were evaluated: clinical symptoms, physical examination, duration from operation to the gait analysis, number and level of operation, Visual Analogue Scales (VAS), modified Dallas pain questionnaire, psychological evaluations (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI) and gait parameters through 3 dimensional gait analysis. Results: Walking velocity was inversely correlated with scores of modified Dallas pain questionnaire and BDI. Stride length was inversely correlated with scores of return to work, neurogenic claudication, VAS, modified Dallas pain questionnaire and BDI. Range of pelvic obliquity was inversely correlated with scores of modified Dallas pain questionnaire and BDI. There was no significant differences between findings of physical exam and gait parameters. Conclusion: Results of the gait analysis of patients with failed back surgery syndrome showed significant relationship with clinical factors reflecting psychosocial background of patients.
Synthesis of LiCoO2 nano powders using recycled cobalt precursors from waste WC-Co hard metal

LiCoO2, a cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries, was prepared using recycled Co3O4. First, cobalt powders were separated from waste WC-Co hard metal with an acid-base chemical treatment. Subsequently, Co3O4 powders were prepared by thermal treatment of the resulting Co(OH)2. By adding a predetermined amount of LiOH •H2O, LiCoO2 was obtained by sintering for 10 h in air at 800 οC. Nano-sized LiCoO2 was obtained by thermal treatment of the LiOH-coated Co3O4 particles at 500 οC for 3 h. LiOH was coated onto the Co3O4 particles by a sonochemical method. The synthesized micro- and nano-LiCoO2 particles using recycled Co precursors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis.
