      • Hardy의 소설 Far from the Madding Crowd에 나타난 희극적 요소

Vol.16 No.-

Thomas Hardy is seldom regarded as comic writer in any important sense. But the example of Hardy's comic perspective are abundantly found in his letters, dialogues, anecdotes about literary acquaintance and the biograhy credited to his second wife but known to have been dictates by Hardy himself. Therefore a detailed study of his novels reveals that Hardy worked more often in the comic than in the tragic mode, and there is not a book, even in the most tragic which lacks comic elements in his novels. Far from the Madding Crowd contains Hardy's most balance view of life, mixing tragic, pathetic ludicrous and comic elements in a manner consistent with the plot, setting and characterization. In this novel Hardy follows the same comic structure as appeared in Shakespearean romantic comedy, introducing a young couple, complicating their relationship through misunderstanding socio-economic disparity and a very real and tragic marriage, and surrounding the action with comic background characters and authorial commentary. These last two devices, combines with the bantering of the main characters, Oak and Bathsheba, preserve the comic tone of the novel through the devastating incidents of the plots, and bring the story to a conclusion which is consistent with the comic beginning. The presentation of both tragic and comic elements in a consistent development of the story permits the serious incidents to be used as an evaluation for the character's responses to their attitude toward life. That is, Hardy's people, those who accept the life with some humour survive, whereas those who lack humour suffer as a result. The tone and direction of the story being controlled through the comic elements, Hardy shows the nature and judicious view of man's relationship to the catastrophes and compensations of life, and the survival of the two main characters who preserved comic perspective proves Hardy's view of life, not as a pessimist but as a melio rist.

Vol.- No.70

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of instructional methods among junior officers in Troop Information and Education (TI&E) and systematically identify priorities for instructional method application. There is a survey on the perception of instructional methods targeting TI&E Second Lieutenants for this purpose. The Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) approach was used to analyze the questionnaire data, and paired t-tests were used to examine differences in the preference and utilization of instructional methods. As a result, there were statistically significant differences in instructional methods preference and utilization. And as a result of IPA, it was discovered that the multimedia-based instructional methods belonged to the 'maintenance area' with high preference and utilization, whereas game-based learning belonged to the 'concentration area' with high preference but low utilization. Additionally, while the preference for explanatory classes was low, it was discovered to be a highly effective educational method. These findings imply that learner-centered instructional methods in which learners or soldiers can actively participate in military education programs for high achievement should be encouraged.

Polyamide-66/Glass fiber

Vol.18 No.4

Purpose: In this study, we evaluated the physical and thermal properties of the compositions made by blending glass fiber (GF) of different contents into glass fiber polyamide-66, and investigated if the compositions applying to the glasses frame to replace the TR-90, which is polyamide-12 resin used as an injection-type spectacle frame material. Methods: To investigate the characteristics change of polyamide-66 (PA-66) compositions with the change of the content of glass fibers, we produced a composition of the content by using a twin-screw extruder. The mechanical strength of the composition production was measured and coating properties as well as cutting processability were evaluated. We evaluated the applicability of the glasses frame by comparison the results of new compositions with characterizations of traditional TR. Results: For the results of the characterization of Polyamide-66/GF composition, we found that the higher increase of content of the glass fiber, the less mold shrinkage rate, and the mechanical strength was increased. Tensile strength increased from 498 kg/cm2 for 0 wt%of the content of the glass fibers to 849 kg/cm2 for 30 wt% of the content of the glass fibers. As a result of a coating evaluation, the strength of coating was 4B in the GF 5wt% and 5B, which was extremely good coating characteristics, in the over than GF 5 wt%. Conclusions: In case that 30 wt% of the glass fiber was blended, the mechanical strength was greatly improved, the hardness was increased, injection temperature increased due to increase of the viscosity, and the flow mark of the product may occur. The paint coating of PA-66 blended with glass fiber was all excellent. With general evaluating physical properties and workability properties it was determined that around 10 wt% of the content of the glass fibers was possible to apply a spectacle frame.

      • The return of the Native에 나타난 Gothic적 요소에 관한 연구

Vol.19 No.-

Though Hardy's fiction remains always in close touch with the realistic thought, his imagination frequently transports him to the world of myth and romance. criticism has done full justice to the first aspect of his genius but had only recently begun to give proper recognition to second. Hardy's imaginative power owes its strange individuality to a mixture of qualities seldom found together. In the first place, it is extremely true to nature. Whether the is describing a landscape or a state of mind, he never shuts his eyes to what is ugly in it or what is dull. To convey the spirit of it as it is, is his sole aim. For the second distinguishing quality about his imagination is that it is poetic. This duality is the most important fact Hardy's work considered in its romantic aspect. Hardy's poetic strain in his creative imagination is of the romantic type-sublime, irregular, quaint, mysterious and extravagant. Indeed, the quaintness was a notable element in Hardy's imagination, for his eye was instinctively attracted by the queer. So, the grotesque was an essential of Hardy,s imaginative constitution. Here it can be also explained partly in terms of his view of life, because he wanted to stress the strange irony of Fate. In addition, his particular circumstance reinforced his innate disposition. Hardy started his career as an architect, and the architecture that pleased him best was Gothic church architecture. He thought it the peak of man's artistic achievement because he thought that in architecture cunning irregularity is of enormous worth, and it is obvious that he carried on his works, perhaps in part unconsciously, the Gothic art-principle in which he had been trained. Thus he saw special connection between architecture and letters, and his standard of taste in architecture became his standard of taste in letters. On the other hand, Hardy was excessively from his childhood. Witnessing the tragic cindition of life, Hardy came to realize not only every creature's struggle for existence but also the discord in the nature of existence, that is, the will of Fate against man's intention. And yet, he also came to see a dignity of human kind and its sublimity in man's heroic-attitude which withstand the affronts of indifferent nature. After all, the art of his novels is not to preach his philosophy but to intensify the expression of things so that the heart and inner meaning is made vividly visble. Accordingly his use of grotesque caprice of Fate invests his art with an intense and terrible grandeur and shows the importance of human action by magnifying the figures involved. Therefore, Hardy's novel's horrific material of Gothicism, whether it is used for depicting nature or condition of life, is to create a hitherto unperceived beauty, 'the negative beauty of tragic tone.' And it is most faithfully represented in The Return of the Native.

      • Tess of the d'Urbervilles

Vol.18 No.-

The aim of this study is to examine humour and irony in Hardy's novel,Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Hardy is a comic writer, though his major works are all tragic.Although the prevalent view of Hardy as a novelist is that of very serious, even pessimistic writer, the rich lode of comedy runs through his writing, and even private and published writings demonstrate the aboundance of humour. Therefore, many of contemporary and more recent reviewers praise his use of comedy contributing greatli to the overall success of his long works. Hardy's pervasive theme in all his novel is the contrast between appearance and reality. In accordance with what he called his own 'idiosyncratic mode of regard' his works are based largely on a method of showing rather than telling, whereby plot and structure depend to a great extent on varying states of perception.By deliberately exaggerating his subject,Hardy achieves to present a life which aims at an impression of greater verisimilitude than the simple transcription of fact. So,each of Hardy's novels is essentially a way of looking at things in order to reveal man's awkward position in the world and to show that nothing is as it seems and that the world is made up of ironic incongruities .Consequently the irony in Hardy's novels is not of entirely tone or texture but a principle of structure, and the comic elements in Hardy's novels largely results from his use of irony. While Hardy's earlier works show the ingredients of the traditional romantic comedy, his later novels reveal a gradual deepening of the tragic view of life. The late novels do not indicate Hardy's world view in its entirely but reflect the bitter miseries he felt about certain social iniquities, and the ironic or dark satirical tendency emerges more profoundly than from his earlier works. Tess of the d'Urbervilles, one of his tragic novels of all time, contains much functional humour, but of a variety different from that found in his earlier works. Here, Hardy uses the comic elements to control the tone of each phase of the story. The structure of the novel is based essentially on contrast between that she (the heroine) appears to be in the eyes of social law, and what she is of God-given nature. Throughout the novel there is a continual tension between objective and subjective views as the heroine herself is torn between the knowledge of material truth and her own imaginative conception of it. So Tess's story tends to be ironic and tragic. However, Hardy's keen sense of humour makes her tragedy more tolerable for readers. Accordingly Tess of the d'Urbervilles provides us with abundant ironic and bitter humours. Yet Hardy reveals much of the misery man suffers, which is ultimately remediable by greater social enlightenment, and shows us that his view of life is not negative but positive. It is through comic spirits that lie in the vein of his works that Hardy seems to try to make a painful world we live in more livable. Therefore,in a strict sense,Hardy is not a pessimist but a meliorist.

      • Hardy의소설 Under the Greenwood Tree에 나타난 Comic Elements

Vol.15 No.-

Hardy is not a comic writer in a popular sense. However, not only his practice demonstrates abundant comic elements but also his biographies, letters and his human relatioship reveal his keen sense of humour. Unlike most of Hardy's later novels, Under the Greenwood Treen is appealing, high spirited enterainment and shows the purest example of comic plotting, which is constructed along the most convientonal lines of comic development. The plot interweaves a sprightly story of young love with that of the church musician's reluctant yielding to the organ as a new source of accompaniment. At first the puestion of prire seems to be main theme, but the romance of Dick and Fancy is central to the novel. The young couple move through the usual uncertainties, jealousies, spats and impassioned reconciliation with Fancy's father, Geoffrey Day who attempts to thwart the marriage. But the true love of the young couple overcome the obstacles and marry, their bungling antics, fear, and hesitaitons providing ample humour. The tone is sustained humorously by the narrator and the comic background characters. The conclusion resolves the issue of social inequality and the conflict between the old and new; between the simple unreflective, rural life and the sophisticated, speculative, mechanical world of a new order, and results in the young couple's happy ending. In this respect, Under the Greewood Tree belongs to a traditional romantic comedy and shows that Hardy is talented as a comic writer as well. The comic elements in Hardy's works give "will to live" to the world where the whole mankind struggles for existence. Therefore, in a strict sense, Hardy is not a pessemist but a meliorist.
