이방인으로 미국 가족 들여다보기: 김용익의 「써커스 타운에서 온 병정」과 「양과 지미와 나」를 중심으로

손병용 한국동서비교문학학회 2023 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.- No.65

Kim Yong Ik is widely recognized as a prominent, early-generation, Korean-American novelist whose literary body of work predominantly mirrors his longing for the cherished memories from his formative years in Korea. However, two notable exceptions within his work, namely “They Won’t Crack It Open” and “The Sheep, Jimmy and I” deviate from this theme by unraveling narratives set in America, with a focus on Korean students pursuing education in the United States. This paper undertakes an in-depth analysis of “They Won’t Crack It Open” by examining the experiences of a Romanian immigrant family who grapple with destitution and subsequently develop an inferiority complex. This exploration is juxtaposed to the objectification of Romanian culture, which serves as a catalyst for familial strife. Similarly, in “The Sheep, Jimmy and I,” Kim portrays the alienation experienced by his protagonist and Jimmy within both the broader Caucasian society and the confines of the family unit. In the narrative, affluent white family members ostracize Jimmy, who appears to be contending with mental health issues, choosing exclusion over inclusion within the familial circle. Jimmy is abject in his family. This study delves into these themes as instances that dismantle the idealized image of America and its family, concurrently shedding light on the cultural marginalization experienced by Koreans as outsiders within mainstream American society. Furthermore, the research navigates the potential remedies and alternatives that Kim presents in response to these intricate challenges, providing valuable insights into the complexities of identity, belonging, and cultural assimilation in the context of Korean-American literature.

『혼 왕』에 나타난 지형의 공간적 상징성

        손병용 현대영미어문학회 2018 현대영미어문학 Vol.36 No.4

In this study, I’d like to explore the spatial symbolism of the geography-land, sea, and coastline in the earliest English medieval romance, King Horn. The geographical settings in this romance have not been considered so heavily by scholars, but I think they have significant meanings. The geography in this work serves to compose the plot of romance as genre, helps Horn attain private maturity and public status, implies circumstances of those days, and includes desire to make order. Land is the Christian realm where good kings rule. Sea is the place where pagans lurk. The coastline, where land and sea meet, is the place where these two meet and clash. The coastline, where the two extremes meet, is the place of opportunity because Horn can demonstrate his prowess as an ideal knight by defeating pagan enemies and regain his birthright as a successor to the throne. Therefore, the coastline is the place of reconstruction for Horn. I think that the geography in this romance has a symbolic meaning of circular narrative of medieval romance which tells the reader that everything is restored to its proper place. .

The pH & alkalinity adjustment method by lime and carbon dioxide($CO_2$) for corrosion control in water distribution system was investigated to determine the optimum operational condition in lime adding process in water treatment plant(WTP). The mixing time at dissolution tank and sedimentation time at saturator for maintaining optimal turbidity condition of lime supernatant were 60~75 minutes and 75~95 minutes, respectively. There was no difference according to $CO_2$ adding methods such as $CO_2$ saturated water or $CO_2$ gas. But, $CO_2$ saturated water could be convenience at WTP in terms of pH control and quantitative dosing. To minimize generation of calcium carbonate products, the short time interval between adding of lime and $CO_2$ is most important. The lime should be added below 32 mg/l for preventing pH rising and generation of calcium carbonate products at the heating condition.

Breton Lai, Magic, and the Disinherited Son: Aurelius’s Brother in Chaucer’s “Franklin’s Tale”

        손병용 현대영미어문학회 2017 현대영미어문학 Vol.35 No.4

Chaucer’s “Franklin’s Tale” has been analyzed under various themes. Based on these previous studies, this paper examines the role and identity of Aurelius’s brother. Aurelius is a squire who can possess property and be a knight. However, his brother is an unnamed clerk. When Aurelius is grief-stricken, his brother appears, offers a solution, and resumes the narrative. He helps in removing the rocks which can be seen as magical. However, he calls this natural science commenting the authority of church. Here, it can be inferred that he is conscious of social stigmatization and the church’s beliefs, and that he tries to replace magical elements with scientific grounds. Unlike Aurelius, his brother is an unnamed clerk and wonders about aimlessly. In this regard, he must have been deprived of his name and identity because of charges of practicing pagan or magical activities as he is disinherited of his property.

Athol Fugard sets his drama in the Republic of South Africa in the midst of apartheid. He presents 3 central characters to the audience. Mr. M serves as teacher in Location. He teaches the importance of education. He stresses that learning undigested by thought is labor lost, and thought unassisted by learning is perilous. He treasures Thami, another main character. However, his education is limited by the Bantu Education Act and given to him oppressively as a traditional African teaching. He is represented as intellectual who can not resist actively. Thami is Mr. M's favorite pupil. He is bright and has leadership. However, he wants to give his people liberty and freedom and, thus, joins in radical protest. He considers Mr. M's thought is old-fashioned and freedom can be gained through the violence. Isabel is white female student. She realizes the fact of the black when participating at debate. She respects and admires the other's culture and tries to live as South African. By presenting these characters, Fugard makes the audience ask themselves. 로망스의 정치성: 「기사 이야기」를 중심으로

        손병용 한국중세근세영문학회 2015 중세르네상스 영문학 Vol.23 No.1

This study aims to grasp the meaning of political nature of the medievalromance. The romance has a paradigm that the knight rides out to seek anadventure. Northrop Frye says that romance has superior characters and anarchetype that support the contemporary social structure. Often, romanceprovides its reader or audience with the nostalgia for the past to provoke ameaningful challenge to the present. Frederic Jameson has an interest on whatfor Frye is a deformation or deviation from the archetype of romance. He thinksthat romance has a historical and ideological context, and reflects a particularideological context. Geraldine Heng recognizes romance as “the name ofdesiring narrational modality that coalesces from the extant cultural matrix.”She stresses on an expansive meaning of romance as “the material concretionof the collective will of cultural agents and forces.”From these perspectives, I try to focus on Knight Tale and examine thepolitical context of Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of the Tale. He was a son ofrich merchant and served as an bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat. He wentthrough a period of turbulence in England in 14th century. Treacherousbehavior was punished severly. Writing and even talking against the royalfamily were punished. In this context, Chaucer was very cautious to reveal hisown political message. Therefore, to lessen the burden and avoid a politicalcontroversy, he appropriated and transformed the convention of romance. The adventure that romance knight seeks to carry out and achieveself-examination is not given to Palamon and Arcite. The idealized love ofromance between knight and his lady has no interactive relationship. Instead,Theseus, who reminds Edward Ⅲ according to Derek Brewer, is represented asmerciful and powerful king. He shows mercy to begging ladies and defeats OldCreon. However, he imprison Palamon and Arcite, and never intends to setthem free. After Palamon and Arcite come out of prison and fight in the forest,he makes a suggestion of tournament for winner to get Emilye, but hissuggestion causes a great misfortune, Arcite’s death. Theseus turns the criticismtoward the Providence of God and arranges the marriage between Palamon andEmilye. He first considers the allegiance with other countries and security of hiskingdom, and orders them to marry. Regardless of their intentions, Palamonand Emilye get married. The narrator says that they lived in bliss, in richnessand in health. However, this happy ending is an only conventional romanceending. By using and transforming convention of the mode, Chaucer makesPalamon, Arcite, and Emilye victims of romance. Rather, he stresses on Theseusand provides a model of king. Chaucer confidential sends his political messagethat king should use his political ability to tide over a difficult situation andvalue the opinion of Parliament.
