Vol.- No.26
This seven-month observations and research on Korean immigrant churches reveal that men at church hold leading roles, but women serve as supplementary roles for men’s positions. This inequality between men and women has been a dominant tradition in the first generation Korean immigrant churches. This tradition has carried on to the second generation Korean immigrant churches. The purpose of this paper is to propose observational answers to why the second generation Korean immigrant churches maintain the hierarchy between men and women. It results from their Christian perspectives, social isolation, and church structures. Before delving into the answers of this research topic in depth, geographical distributions and denominational analyses of Korean immigrant churches in California, USA, are given in section 2. The differences between the first and the second generation Korean immigrant churches are enumerated in section 3. The reasons behind the second generation’s representation of inequality between men and women are discussed in section 4. First, the women in the second generation Korean immigrant churches believe that the Bible provides the most authoritative guidance to their lives, so they are willing to accept Biblical patriarchism. Second, the second generation has been struggling to find its own identities between Korea and America, which stem from the first-hand experience of social isolation and discrimination due to its ethnicity. They have chosen to adopt their parents’ culture and value system. Third, the second generation Korean churches form their unique internal structures. Horizontally dispersed small groups spread out like neurons. The leaders of these small groups are men who decide on their policies and women just follow men’s decisions. A conclusion is given in section 5.
