An experiment was carried out to study the effect of rate and time of nitrogen application on the growth, yield, nutritive value and botanical composition of native grassland. The experiment was carried out for a year on the native grassland where about 70 percent of herbages was grasses including Arundinella hirta as dominating species, and soil fertility was relatively low. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Higher nitrogen application encouraged the plant growth vigorously and made the plant height taller, though it was not porportional to the amount of fertilizer. 2. The more nitrogen was fertilized, the higher herbage yields were harvested. However, there was no significant difference between 20 ㎏ and 30 ㎏ per 10 a. It is considered that 20 ㎏ per 10 a was economical. 3. Nitrogen application in early June when it is early stage of growth resulted higher yield than early July when it is the beginning of vigorous growth. For higher fertilizer amount, it was more effective to apply at twice, in early June and early August right after the first harvesting. 4. Although the dry matter percentage of plant was relatively lowered according to higher fertilization, the difference was slight between nitrogen levels. The dry matter percentage of the plant fertilized in June was lower than the fertilized in July, but total dry matter yield was higher with June application. 5. The crude protein content of the grasses was increased considerably and crude fiber was decreased by higher fertilization, but the rate of change was not proportional to the fertilizer amount. Crude fat content was increased slightly and there was no difference with crude ash content. 6. The botanical composition of the grassland was not changed significantly by the rate or time of nitrogen application for the first year.
