The main purpose of this study was to understand the problems of the aged and to find the best feasible solutions to their problems through an understanding of the psychological characteristics of the aged and the social environment factors which are the causes of their problems. The method of the present study was a review of the literature. The psychological characteristics of the aged were found to passivity, introvertion, depression and the feeling of solitude. These characteristics keep the aged from active adaptation to a new life style and value system. Modern industrialized Korea may be characterized as a society of rapid changes and mobility. As a consequence, the aged are apt to lose stability in society and the family group. Possible solutions for the resolution of the problems of the aged are as follow: 1. Retirement policy should be changed from a uniform age criterion to an individual ability criterion. 2. The social welfare system should contain provision for the reduction of the taxes of those who support the aged. 3. Special commodities specially for the aged should be developed along with expansion of public facilities for and reeducation of the aged.
