Modern medical science has been advanced in the past years, but congenital malformations are still major cause of neonatal death. During the period of 5 years, from january 1985 to December 1989, we studied the incidence of congenital malformations among 8010 live births delivered at SCH University Hospital and 63 malformed babies transfered from other hospitals. The result were as follows: 1) The incidence of congenital malformations was 1.8%. 2) The annual incidences of congenital malformations were 1.4% in 1985, 1.9% in 1986, 1.9% in 1987, 1.9% in 1988 and 1.7% in 1989. 3) The sexual incidence of congenital malformations in male and female baby was 2.1% and 1.3%, respectively. 4) The incidence of congenital malformations by birth weight was as follows. Below 1500gm was 3.9%, between 1500gm and 2499gm was 4.6%, between 33 and 36weeks was 7.2%, between 37 and 41weeks was 1.6% and above 42weeks was 1.5%. 6) The incidence of congenital malformations by birth weight for gestational age was as follows. SGA was 8.2%, AGA was 1.6%, and LGA was 3.3%. 7) 1.7% of babies born to mothers younger than 35 years of age had malformations, whereas 5.3% had malformations in mothers older than 35 years of age. 8) Gastrointestinal system was the most frepuently involved system(28.1%) and then cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and skin and soft tissue system in the order. 9) Neonatal death was caused most frequently by cardiovascular system malformations(29.7% among 27 total death).
