In order to improve the housing environment and quality of life for the rural elderly, this study aims to identify and present the status of community centers, most widely used by the elderly in rural areas. Through the literature review, type and space elements of community centers were derived and selected three target areas were investigated. As a result of literature analysis, the space type of rural community centers were classified as indoor space and outdoor space. The indoor space types were classified as entry space, public space, sanitary space and the outdoor space were classified as entry space and leisure space. Some community centers were surveyed in Seocheon-gun, Wanju-gun, and Cheongju-city. Results indicate the indoor and outdoor space design and elements were undergoing a lot of inconvenience partly because standard design was considered and the space was not planned for the physical, psychological and social health of the rural elderly. Therefore, this study will be used as a basis for building healthier and more friendly residential environments that can enhance the health and quality of life for the elderly in rural areas.

The objective of this study is to propose a color plan for rural villages that seeks harmony between natural and artificial environments in consideration of the fact that as new and renewable energy businesses increase drastically, problems of landscape color occur in rural areas. To this end, the current color conditions over the target regions are examined in context of energy businesses; a land simulation is developed; a survey on the preferences is conducted with the result analyzed; and finally, a color plan for villages where energy businesses and non-energy businesses are conducted. For the survey, 40 photos including simulation photos and original photos of villages were used: the photos before and after the simulation was applied were shown to village residents. The validity of the selected colors was then evaluated accordingly. The survey was conducted among 15 residents in villages where energy businesses were conducted and 15 in villages where non-energy businesses were conducted. As new and renewable energy methods such as solar energy panels are utilized over rural villages in the future, selecting artificial environmental colors that can better represent the region's identity and that are in harmony with natural environments will be an important factor in community center or housing remodeling projects, local community development projects, and so forth. It is expected that the present study can be utilized as the basis for village color plans that seek to consider actual local conditions based on objective data rather than selecting colors uniformly or based on subjective judgment.

People are making multilateral efforts to create beautiful agricultural landscapes. In farming villages, however, large-scale facilities or houses do not blend in with the natural environment because of their outer colors, which are mostly primary colors that are not chosen in consideration of the natural environment. This was addressed in the three following steps: 1) Research tool was used to identify predominant colors and images that represent various types of rural areas; 2) landscape experts conducted a feasibility study and pilot study on using these colors; and 3) the main study was done by investigating how local people and out-of-town visitors perceive the colors. The villages involved in the development projects were mostly represented by achromatic colors, meaning white, black, and variations of gray. Also, adjectives such as “modern” were shown to be keywords that symbolize the atmosphere. Less developed villages had more greenish colors and “natural” as their keyword. Developed villages in suburban areas were mainly represented by shades of blue and green, while less developed ones were mainly represented by green and yellow. In special types of rural areas, developed and developing were represented by achromatic and green colors, whereas less developed ones were represented by green and blue. Respondents were also asked 1) whether they were satisfied with their village’s current overall color scheme and 2) whether they thought there was harmony between the surrounding natural environment and artificial structures. People responded with “so so” for the first question, while some answered “not good enough” and “no” for the second.
