Purpose : When liver cirrhosis patients accompanying ascites need renal replacement therapy because of chronic renal failure (CRF), peritoneal dialysis (PD) can allow direct removal of ascites and prevent anticoagulants use. However, since PD might aggravate hypoalbuminemia and increase chances of peritonitis, clinicians tend to hesitate to apply it to those patients. The aim of the present study is to assess the outcome and stability of PD for the treatment of CRF patient with cirrhosis accompanying ascites. Methods : A retrospective study based on the clinical records was performed in cirrhotic patients with ascites in whom PD was performed for the treatment of CRF and who were followed up at Samsung Medical Center unit, between January 1995 and July 2005. Results : In our study, 15 patients were enrolled. Child-pugh class was worse in non-survival group than survival group (p<0.01). One-year patient survival was 40% in Class C and 75% in Class B, and patient survival differed between Class C and Class B (p=0.0014). Causes of death were terminal liver failure (n=6) and sepsis due to pneumonia (n=1). Total 27 episodes of peritonitis occurred, and the peritonitis rates were 0.91 episodes/patients-year. Conclusion : Although the peritonitis rates turned out somewhat high, the use of PD for the treatment of CRF in patients with liver cirrhosis accompanying ascites seems to be safe and effective. Main cause of death in our study seems to be related to liver disease.

Robots that can move along the narrow and rough tube are very important as the request for the inspection increases. It is necessary for the inspection robots to have a capability to move successfully at even overturned situation and have a simple mechanism to reduce the unexpected failure possibility fer the successful completion of the given mission. Through this paper, the authors propose a novel and simple mechanism using a combination cam device to generate the locomotive motion of multi-legs. This robot uses one DC motor and one combination cam shaft to generate the locomotive motion and can move rough tubes without failure even at the overturned situation. The robot also shows enough fragging force fer the connected line that is very important for a wired inspection robot. Kinematics analysis to design the specification of the robot will be followed and several applications show this robot's potential capabilities.

In recent years, the pathology in the colon grows up annually since people of all ages prefer to have less fiber and more fat food. Therefore, the colonoscopy is generalized in developed countries. But it requires much time to acquire a dexterous skill to perform an operation and the procedure is painful to the patient. Therefore, some studies on the development of autonomous colonoscope are carried out. In this paper, we propose a new and simple locomotive mechanism that can be propelled by elliptic motion of a leg. It has several legs that have constant phase difference each other and those legs are disposed along the upper and lower of the body. In order to evaluate the performance of locomotive mechanism, we carried out the simulations of moving characteristics and the experiments in the colon of a dead pig.

Surface color is the most important quality factor for the grade evaluation of cherry tomato. Color is one of the representative indicators for the maturity which is closely related to the internal quality of cherry tomato, such as firmness, sugar content, and acidity. This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between surface color and internal quality of cherry tomatoes harvested from both hydroponic and soil culture at different ripening stages . To calculate the color values of cherry tomatoes an automatic color imaging system was constructed. A specially designed image processing algorithm for the color measurement was developed. The color values of L*, a*, b* were calculated from the initial color values of RGB and then compared with the internal quality. Statistical analyses indicated that the internal quality was more highly correlated with the surface color than size of cherry tomatoes. Color image features were also investigated to detect external damage of cherry tomatoes. The value of (R value - R mean value)/R mean value was the most effective image feature for the detection of damaged areas on the surface of cherry tomatoes. The results of this study demonstrated the feasibility of color sorting process as an alternative of the conventional drum type size sorting system for cherry tomato industry.

A renal infarct is too rare a disease for early diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, it presents nonspecific symptoms in many patients. Cardiac diseases such as valvular heart disease and arterial fibrillation are the most common causes of renal infarct. Vascular disease such as renal artery dissection or aortic dissection, trauma, inflammation, vasculitis, malignancy and antiphospholipid syndrome have been also known as possible causes of renal infarct. In acute pancreatitis, adjacent vessels can be involved, and were reported to induce splenic infarction, portal vein thrombosis and superior mesenteric vein thrombosis etc. However, the renal infarct from renal artery involvement in acute pancreatitis has not yet been reported. In our case, a 46 year old male patient had an abdominal trauma due to an in-car accident to develop a rupture of pancreatic tail. The progression of acute pancreatitis caused the inflammation of left renal artery, leading to renal artery obstruction. We report a case of renal infarct developed in acute pancreatitis.
