The pyrolytic behavior of vanillin, a flavorant for manufactured cigarettes, was examined to find its contribution to the smoke composition. Vanillin was pyrolyzed at various temperatures (500-$900^{\circ}C$) in a stream of nitrogen. Pyrolytic products at $800^{\circ}C$ were identified with GC/MS. As increasing temperature, pyrolytic products did not appear with qualitative differences. Component analysis of the resulting products showed that 24 compounds were identified. and phenolic compounds were major products. The pyrolytic pathway of vanillin was also discussed.

Leucine and isoleucine were reacted with glucose in a propylene glycol solution and volatile compounds produced from these reaction were analysed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A total of 24 compounds were identified in the leucine reaction volatiles and the major components were 2-isopropyl-5-methyl-2-hexenal, methylbutyraldehyde PGA, butyraldehyde PGA, 5-methylfur-fural, isopropylmethylhexenal PGA and 2-acetylpyrrole. From the isoleucing reaction volatiles, 20 compounds were identified and the major components were methylbutyraldehyde PGA, butyraldehyde PGA and 2-acetylpyrrole. The amino acids chosen for this study were considered as giving fruity and cocoa aroma when heated with glucose.

This study was conducted to evaluate the characterization of the pyrolysis products of tobacco constituents such as cellulose, lignin and tobacco additives. The pyrolysis condition was designed to simulate the pyrolysis/distillation zone$(200\~600^{\circ}C)$ and combustion zone$(700\~950^{\circ}C)$of burning com in the smoking cigarette. The pyrolysis products were determined by GC/MS after pyrolysis using Double-Shot pyrolyzer. In the case of cellulose and lignin, the number of pyrolysis product in the condition that simulate the pyrolysis/distillation zone was much more than the combustion zone simulating one. The major products of cellulose were levoglucosan, furfural, and 1, 6-anhydro-$\beta$-D-glucofuranose and that of lignin were phenol, 2-methoxy phenol, and 1, 2-dimethoxy benzene. In the case of tobacco additives such as 2, 6-dimethyl pyrazine, maltol, and piperonal, the pyrolysis products of these additives were evaporated from the pyrolyszer at least $96\%$ intactly. These results indicate that tobacco constituents such as cellulose and lignin were thermally degraded at the pyrolysis/distillation zone and thoroughly broke down at the combustion zone, but tobacco additives were intactly evaporated from burning com of smoking cigarette.
Cis-9-Octadecenoic acid와 trans-9-Octadecenoic acid의 열분해에 관한 연구

The pyrolysis of geometrical isomers of 9-octadecenoic acid were conducted at $600^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen, and its pyrolytic behaviors were investigated. The pyrolytic products of both fatty acids, cis-9-octadecenoic acid(oleic acid) and trans-9-octadecenoic acid(elaidic acid), were analyzed using a gas chromatograph and GC/MS spectrometer. Twenty-seven different compounds were identified from these pyrolyzates, and the chief products of them were ketones, alcohols and aromatic hydrocarbons. And also, the pyrolytic mechanisms of two geometrical isomers of this fatty acid were discussed by a comparison of experimental results.

$\alpha$, $\beta$-4.8.13-Duvatriene-1, 3-diols was identified as the major component of diterponoid extracted from Nicotiana Tabacum L. The isolated duvatriendiol was thermolyged at 300'c under a stream of nitrogen. The approximately 20 compounds were separated from the thermolyzates and the 9 compounds of them were identified with GC/MS. However, the thermolyzates identified in this study differed in distribution from the products under the condition of a different temperature or photooxidation.

Different isolation methods for the volatile components of Anise(Pimpinella anisum L.) are compared in terms of the difference of components obtained with each analytical procedure. These methods include headspace(purge & trap) sampling procedure, simultaneous distillation extraction(SDE), steam distillation and solvent extraction. Total 43 components were identified by comparing gas chromatography retention time and mass spectral data. Different isolation techniques result in compositionally different isolates. The headspace(purge & trap) sampling procedure was found to be the best method of choice for a qualitative analysis of the volatile components.
