Lawrence’s most works are usually thought to be filthy and obscene because he outspokenly depicts the sexual intercourse. But he tries to keep both human spiritual values and instinct in the course of capitalizing and industrializing society. He tries to take back or restore the human being’s life force through lively and actively interchanging blood. The writer tries to express the unsound and morbid circumstances and phenomena of industrial society through Gerald. He hopes to make the ideal love between Birkin and Ursula with understanding each other’s values and conceits. On the contrary, in case of Gerald and Gudrun, they ended in catastrophic result with Gerald’s death because Gudrun cannot accept Gerald’s life style and opinions and thoughts. Of course, at first, Ursula disagrees with Birkin’s way of thinking and conceptions in almost everything. But finally they reach the harmony and balance in their relations through narrowing their differences and conflicts. Especially, Birkin displays more his broad mind and tolerance than Ursula when they are in discord in some matters. Accordingly, Lawrence shows us that man needs to change his traditional conceptions and values in favor of woman’s interest and viewpoint to make the ideal love especially in the modern society through this work.

In Sister Carrie, Carrie's life was instinctive rather than willful, due to external forces in the course of abstaining material sucess and security. Carrie aimless purses the illusion of wealth and pleasyre, but she eventually experiences an unsatisfactory state of heart. Dreiser also depicts Hurstwood as a victim of chance and circumstances. Hurstwood ended in ruin in this height of his life and a tragic death because he could not resist the external forces. In Jennie Gerhardt, through Jennie's various experiences, such as her relationship with her lovers, Brander and Leaster, the social restraints and contempts from her love affairs with the two men, her poor family circumstances, the death of her daughter, Vesta, and so on, she not only matures and becomes much more sensitive, but also develops a broad capacious mind and better understanding of the pains of others. Dreiser found that the tragic factors of man's life are not in the violences and vices, but in the desires, circumstances and chances, which he reveals through his work. Dreiser shows us that if a man accomplishes to his society and will be a genuinely happy person.

『아메리카의 비극』과 『앱설롬, 앱설롬!』에서의 비극적 주인공들에 관한 연구

This study is to clarify the man's true life through the comparative analysis of two characters' unhappy fate and end. Theodore Dreiser, who represents the naturalism in American literature, is a writer who focuses on vanishing morals and dignity of man in a modern society. He insists that man's free will can't be practiced in a mechanical and material civilization. That is to say, human beings are helpless when their existence is determined by the external circumstances and the superficial impulses. William Faulkner tries to explain the man's inner truth and emotion through depicting the deep South of America. He, like Dreiser, deals with the mental poverty and the lacks of ethics although we live in more abundance than in past times. In conclusion, the two writers emphasize the importance of responsible deeds and generosities through two characters' paralyzed conscience. With the comparative analysis of two tragic characters, the main point is that we can only lead the true dignified life if we accomplish our desires and great plans based on morality and ethics.

『로드 짐』의 주인공 짐의 도덕성

The aim of this paper is to show the inconsistency between ideal and reality through Jim the main character in Lord Jim. Analyzing the morality which emphasizes this work is the course of acknowledging Conrad`s literary vision. This morality, explained by Marlow, the narrator, originates from the discord between the constant rule of behaviour or standard moral principles and actual state in the accident of Patna and Patusan. Jim is like Hamlet in the scene of hesitation at the crucial time. Jim can not display his heroic thoughts and deeds and basic duty in the actual time such as the accident of the Patna and Patusan, because he only thinks too much and does not exhibit his brave performance. Therefore Jim is considered as an immoral being as he can not show his romantic thought. But Jim thought that man can be prospered and enjoyed by honorable and high-quality life when one acts according to a resolute code of conduct and pursuits his ideal dream without shilly-shally. In conclusion, if a man accomplishes his romantic desires and heroic action based on morality and courage and ethics, he can serve to his society and will be a real happy person. (Tamna University)

The aim of this paper is to reveal how the man and woman relationship is showed in Women in Love. In this work, Lawrence gives a fair interest on ideal human relationship, particularly those between man and woman. As we know, Lawrence is esteemed a activist since he has an intense belief in the survival power. For him, the ideal relationship means the balance resulting from an absolute struggle between both sides. In Women in Love, the importance of star-equilibrium accomplished by Birkin and Ursula is enhanced in contrast to the avaricious reality. The ideal relationship between Birkin and Ursula leads to development in their creativity and fulfillment in their marriage gives them peace and inner security. The harmony and balance between two opposing forces in a satisfying life is the essence of Lawrence's concept of the ideal relationship between man and woman. Just as the two forces of the consciousness and natural impulse should get a balanced equilibrium maintaining their respective independence in a satisfying life of an individual, so man and woman should keep their respective individuality in their harmonious and balanced relationship.

The gelatin and fusion processes of polyvinylchloride(PVC) plastisol were characterized on the thermal and dynamic rheological bases by incorporating a homologous series of dialkyl phtha]ates such as dimethyl(DMP), di-isohexy(DHP), di-2-ethylhexyl(DOP), and isooctylphthalates(DIOP) into PVC. The solvent power of a plasticizer played the most significant role in both processes. A plasticizer with a strong solvent power, DMP, penetrated into some of the PVC particles and swelled or even dissolved them at room temperature. On the other hand, plasticizers with weak solvent power such as DOP, and DHP seemed to be absorbed only into the interstitial pores of the agglomerated PVC particles below T of PVC. However, at the temperatures exceeding Tg, all the plasticizers penetrated into the PVC particles and little pure PVC amorphous phase was left.
