Unsteady flows in a semi-induction system was investigated to verify their characteristics. A semi-induction system was designed and made to verify the flow characteristics in an intake system. To attain an intact wave of an intake pulse, a single semi-intake system was adopted as a test rig. The system consists of an intake pipe and a rotary valve as a pulse generator, and a variable volume Helmholtz resonator. The variable volume Helmholtz resonator was mounted in the intake pipe to enhance a breathing capacity and engine performance. The phase and amplitude of the pulsating flow in an unsteady flow system were found to affect the charging capacity significantly. The behavior of pressure wave, their phase and amplitude were investigated in various regions. Some of the results obtained from experiments were described.

We develop a method to detect the dynamic eccentricity of a permanent magnet (PM) motor by monitoring back electromotive force (BEMF). We derive the mathematical equations of BEMF induced in a tooth and a phase due to dynamic eccentricity of a PM motor. We find that the dynamic eccentricity can be detected by monitoring main harmonic ±1 components of the BEMF induced in a tooth. We also perform the experiment to validate the proposed method by using a PM motor with 8 poles and 12 slots.

Spray angle, a parameter which is most commonly used to evaluate. spray distribution, is important because it affects the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the pintle-type gasoline fuel injector with n-heptane as a test fuel with the three different measuring techniques, i.e. digital image processing, shadowgraphy and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing method, the transmittance level greatly influences the spray angle with the axial distance from the injector. From the experimental results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is obvious that the spray angle vary during the injection period. The results of spray angle from the spray patternator show that there exist the different spray angles in the different areas. The spray angles increase with the increase in the injection pressure for the three measurement techniques considered in this study. The spray angle is widely different, especially in the near region from the injector, according to the measurement techniques used in this experimental work.

Unsteady flows in a semi-induction system was investigated to verify their characteristics. Inside of the induction system in a diesel engine, wave is generated and it affects significantly to breathing performance. The system consists of rotary valve, intake pipe and resonator. To make a air pulsation, a rotary valve was contrived and employed in this system. And also, A side-branched Helmholtz resonator is mounted in the intake pipe to enhance a breathing capacity. The phase and amplitude of the pulsating flow in an unsteady flow system were found to be the strong factor that could be significantly affects to charging capacity. Some of the results given from experiment are described.
