On Cultural Identity Construction in David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish

        ( Xie¸ Bin ),( Kim¸ Taehyung ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2021 영어권문화연구 Vol.14 No.2

This study aims to interpret the construction of cultural identity in David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish from the perspective of Homi Bhabha’s cultural translation theory. Cultural translation signifies a strategy of cultural survival, aiming to give each unique language tradition or cultural text its own space. In the play, the playwright displays the ambivalence of the collision between Chinese and Western cultures through the performance of the protagonist Daniel on the Chinese cultural phenomenon “guanxi,” ensuring the likelihood of cultural negotiation. Using hybrid strategies with the protagonists’ languages, cultures, and identities, the playwright undermines stereotypes of the East held by the West and successfully overthrows the hegemonic position of the colonialist culture. Furthermore, through intercultural negotiation and hybridity, each language tradition or cultural text acquires its own living space and creates new meanings in the Third Space, thereby creating a new cultural identity.

Transcriptional corepressor SMILE recruits SIRT1 to inhibit nuclear receptor estrogen receptor-related receptor gamma transactivation.

        Xie, Yuan-Bin,Park, Jeong-Hoh,Kim, Don-Kyu,Hwang, Jung Hwan,Oh, Sangmi,Park, Seung Bum,Shong, Minho,Lee, In-Kyu,Choi, Hueng-Sik American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Bi 2009 The Journal of biological chemistry Vol.284 No.42

SMILE (small heterodimer partner interacting leucine zipper protein) has been identified as a corepressor of the glucocorticoid receptor, constitutive androstane receptor, and hepatocyte nuclear factor 4alpha. Here we show that SMILE also represses estrogen receptor-related receptor gamma (ERRgamma) transactivation. Knockdown of SMILE gene expression increases ERRgamma activity. SMILE directly interacts with ERRgamma in vitro and in vivo. Domain mapping analysis showed that SMILE binds to the AF2 domain of ERRgamma. SMILE represses ERRgamma transactivation partially through competition with coactivators PGC-1alpha, PGC-1beta, and GRIP1. Interestingly, the repression of SMILE on ERRgamma is released by SIRT1 inhibitors, a catalytically inactive SIRT1 mutant, and SIRT1 small interfering RNA but not by histone protein deacetylase inhibitor. In vivo glutathione S-transferase pulldown and coimmunoprecipitation assays validated that SMILE physically interacts with SIRT1. Furthermore, the ERRgamma inverse agonist GSK5182 enhances the interaction of SMILE with ERRgamma and SMILE-mediated repression. Knockdown of SMILE or SIRT1 blocks the repressive effect of GSK5182. Moreover, chromatin immunoprecipitation assays revealed that GSK5182 augments the association of SMILE and SIRT1 on the promoter of the ERRgamma target PDK4. GSK5182 and adenoviral overexpression of SMILE cooperate to repress ERRgamma-induced PDK4 gene expression, and this repression is released by overexpression of a catalytically defective SIRT1 mutant. Finally, we demonstrated that ERRgamma regulates SMILE gene expression, which in turn inhibits ERRgamma. Overall, these findings implicate SMILE as a novel corepressor of ERRgamma and recruitment of SIRT1 as a novel repressive mechanism for SMILE and ERRgamma inverse agonist.

An Analysis of Land Turtle Imagery in The Grapes of Wrath from the Perspective of Conceptual Blending

        Xie Bin,Joseph Yosup Kim 한국영미문학교육학회 2020 영미문학교육 Vol.24 No.1

This study aims to analyze the cognitive process of land turtle image in Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath based on the conceptual blending. Conceptual blending is a universal cognitive process in people’s thinking and activities, especially in creative thinking and actions. We have analyzed the physical features and crawling process of the turtle and the Joad family and constructed the corresponding relationship between these two. Using the spatial combination of conceptual blending and the completion of the background knowledge framework, the structure in the synthetic space was elaborated to form new meanings. Turtle, as the most prominent animal image in The Grapes of Wrath, bears rich symbolic connotation. Interpretation from the perspective of conceptual blending is conducive to readers to more precisely grasp the deep meaning hidden underneath the text, to attain a comprehensive understanding of the novel, to appreciate Steinbeck’s exquisite ideas and to realize the aesthetic experience of great works.

A Corpus-based Study on Animal Images and Symbolism Interpretation in The Grapes of Wrath

        Bin, Xie,Kim, Joseph Yosup 한국중앙영어영문학회 2020 영어영문학연구 Vol.62 No.4

This study is a corpus-based analysis of animal images and symbolism in John Steinbeck’s masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath. The previous studies indicate that the physical features and crawling process of land turtle and the Joad family present a strong corresponding relationship so that the land turtle bears rich symbolic connotations. The aim of this study is to put forward a more comprehensive animal image by using AntConc corpus analyzing tool. A turtle, rabbits, dogs, and a snake are prominent animal images in The Grapes of Wrath and they carry rich symbolic meanings. Using the method of combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, the researchers mainly apply the tools of the keyword list and concordance in AntConc to analyze the language features and plot development of the novel. The corpus analysis has brought a new perspective to the analysis of literary texts even though this study only explores such analysis at vocabulary, sentence and plot levels. According to the analysis of the corpus, the researchers have found that the description of animal imagery has made an important contribution to the plot development and the overall depiction of the characters. There is still a room for further corpus studies of literary texts.

Molecular characterization of SMILE as a novel corepressor of nuclear receptors

        Xie, Yuan-Bin,Nedumaran, Balachandar,Choi, Hueng-Sik Oxford University Press 2009 Nucleic acids research Vol.37 No.12

SMILE (small heterodimer partner interacting leucine zipper protein) has been identified as a coregulator in ER signaling. In this study, we have examined the effects of SMILE on other NRs (nuclear receptors). SMILE inhibits GR, CAR and HNF4α-mediated transactivation. Knockdown of SMILE gene expression increases the transactivation of the NRs. SMILE interacts with GR, CAR and HNF4α in vitro and in vivo. SMILE and these NRs colocalize in the nucleus. SMILE binds to the ligand-binding domain or AF2 domain of the NRs. Competitions between SMILE and the coactivators GRIP1 or PGC-1α have been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, an intrinsic repressive activity of SMILE is observed in Gal4-fusion system, and the intrinsic repressive domain is mapped to the C-terminus of SMILE, spanning residues 203–354. Moreover, SMILE interacts with specific HDACs (histone deacetylases) and SMILE-mediated repression is released by HDAC inhibitor trichostatin A, in a NR-specific manner. Finally, ChIP (chromatin immunoprecipitation) assays reveal that SMILE associates with the NRs on the target gene promoters. Adenoviral overexpression of SMILE represses GR-, CAR- and HNF4α-mediated target gene expression. Overall, these results suggest that SMILE functions as a novel corepressor of NRs via competition with coactivators and the recruitment of HDACs.

      • Saturated Throughput Analysis of Enhanced Distributed Channel Access Mechanism for Supporting Multimedia Services

Bin Xie,Jie Li,Lianggui Liu 보안공학연구지원센터 2014 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.9 No.12

Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism is used in WLAN to support QoS for various multimedia service flows. IEEE 802.11e EDCA introduces some new QoS parameters based on DCF. How to adjust these parameters is a significant problem. In the paper, we present a novel saturated throughput analysis of the IEEE 802.11e EDCA. This approach involves a novel analytical model that is an extension to previous works, which provide Markov chain analysis to IEEE 802.11e EDCA. Throughput analysis of our model is evaluated by comparison with NS2 simulations. We found the model is correct and suitable for both basic access and request-to-send/clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) access mechanisms.

Five-Year Follow-Up Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Bipolar Plasmakinetic and Monopolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostate

        Chang-Ying Xie,Xing-Huan Wang,Guang-Bin Zhu,Xiang-Bin Liu 연세대학교의과대학 2012 Yonsei medical journal Vol.53 No.4

Purpose: To report the 5-year follow-up results of a randomized controlled trial comparing bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) with standard monopolar TURP for the treatment of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). Materials and Methods: A total of 220 patients were randomized to bipolar plasmakinetic TURP (PK-TURP) or monopolar TURP (M-TURP). Catheterization time was the primary endpoint of this study. Secondary outcomes included operation time, hospital stay, as well as decline in postoperative serum sodium and hemoglobin levels. All patients were assessed preoperatively and followed-up at 1, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months postoperatively. Parameters assessed included quality of life, transrectal ultrasound, serum prostate-specific antigen level, postvoid residual urine volume, maximum urinary flow rates (Qmax), and International Prostate Symptom Score. Patient baseline characteristics, perioperative data including complications, and postoperative outcomes were compared. Complication occurrence was graded according to the modified Clavien classification system. Results: PK-TURP was significantly superior to M-TURP in terms of operation time, intraoperative irrigation volume, resected tissue weight, decreases in hemoglobin and sodium, postoperative irrigation volume and time, catheterization time, and hospital stay. At 5 years postoperatively, efficacy was comparable between arms. No differences were detected in safety outcomes except that the clot retention rate was significantly greater after M-TURP. Conclusion: Our results indicate that PK-TURP is equally as effective in the treatment of BPO, but has a more favorable safety profile in comparison to M-TURP. The clinical efficacy of PK-TURP is long-lasting and comparable with M-TURP.

Search more deeply or search more broadly? An empirical study of external knowledge search strategy in manufacturing SMEs

        Bin Guo,Yueqi Wang,Xiao-Yun Xie,Yongyi Shou 기술경영경제학회 2015 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.23 No.1

Will small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies search more deeplyor search more broadly for product innovation at high levels of environmental turbulence? Inanswering this question, unlike prior studies that treat search depth and search breadth asseparate variables to measure firms’ external knowledge search strategy, this studyintroduces a new concept, external search towards depth-dominance, to capture the trade-offbetween search depth and search breadth for SMEs in a resource-constrained context. Usingdata on 491 Chinese manufacturing SMEs, we find that SMEs search more deeply at highlevels of technological and market turbulence. Moreover, the positive relationship betweenperceived technological turbulence (or perceived market turbulence) and external searchtowards depth-dominance is stronger when the differentiation propensity of a firm’scompetitive strategy is lower. The findings contribute to the understanding of innovationsearch in a resource-constrained context and the context specificity of innovation search.

Effect of Chitosan Solution on the Inhibition of Pseudomonas fluorescens Causing Bacterial Head Rot of Broccoli

        Bin Li,Baoping Liu,Ting Su,Yuan Fang,Guanlin Xie,Guofen Wang,Yanli Wang,Guochang Sun 한국식물병리학회 2010 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.26 No.2

The in vitro antibacterial properties of two kinds of chitosan solutions and their effect in protection of broccoli from bacterial head rot disease were evaluated. Results showed that the two kinds of chitosan solution at different concentrations exhibited strong antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas fluorescens. However, the antibacterial activity of chitosan A solution increased with the increase of chitosan concentration up to 0.10mg/ml while the antibacterial activity of chitosan B solution increased with the increase of chitosan concentration up to 0.05 mg/ml. In addition, the antibacterial activity of chitosan A and chitosan B solution of 0.10mg/ml increased with the incubation time within 12 h and 24 h, respectively. The disease incidence and the lesion diameter of broccoli inoculated with P. fluorescens were significantly reduced when plants were either pretreated or post-treated with six different combinations of chitosan solutions. Overall, the results indicated that the two kinds of chitosan solutions had a potential in controlling bacterial head rot of broccoli.
