        Photo-induced rapid biosynthesis of silver nanoparticle using aqueous extract of Xanthium strumarium and its antibacterial and antileishmanial activity

        The current work describes the biosynthesis of stable AgNPs using aqueous extract of Xanthiumstrumarium (AEX) which act as both reducing as well as a stabilizing agent. The biosynthesis wasconfirmed by UV–visible spectroscopy where the presence of SPR band at lmax 436 nm corresponded tothe existence of AgNPs in reaction mixture. The optimum conditions for biosynthesis of AgNPs were30 min of sunlight exposure time, 3.0% (v/v) of AEX inoculum dose and 3.5 mM AgNO3 concentration. The synthesized AgNPs was characterized by HRTEM, SAED, FESEM, EDX, XRD, AFM, and FTIR whichshowed potent antibacterial and antileishmanial activity.

      • Effect of Cu-doping on the photoluminescence and photoconductivity of template synthesized CdS nanowires

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Cu-doped CdS nanowires were synthesized within the pores of anodic alumina membrane as template via electrochemical deposition. Morphological, structural, optical and photoconductive properties of the synthesized nanowires were studied. Morphological and structural properties were studied by using SEM with EDS (point & line mapper mode) and X-Ray Diffractometer. Scanning electron microscopy with point EDS and line EDS mapping confirms the deposition of pure CdS and Cu-doped CdS throughout the template length respectively. XRD investigations shows the presence of polycrystalline phase and cubic structure of pristine CdS nanowires. Optical properties were studied by UV–visible absorption spectroscopy and time resolved photoluminescence. A gradual decrease in energy band gap from 2.38 eV to 2.10 eV is observed for Cu doped CdS nanowires. Time resolved photoluminescence studies shows the red shift in emission wavelength and increase of excited state lifetimes with Cu doping and also with increase in its concentration in CdS nanowires. Current-voltage characteristics of pure and doped CdS nanowires studied at varying incident light intensity show that the Cu doped nanowires show negative photoconductivity.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Copper doping is done successfully in CdS nanowires grown by template synthesis technique. </LI> <LI> TRPL studies give the idea of the transitions involved with and without Cu doping in the nanowires. </LI> <LI> Photoconductivity studies revealed negative photoconductivity in case of copper doped nanowires. </LI> <LI> 1D CdS:Cu nanowires are found to be a attractive candidate for photoluminescence and photoconductivity applications. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Exstrophy of the Bladder

        Exstrophy of the bladder is a rare congenital anomaly with an incidence of about 1 per 50,000 newborns. The malignant potential of the exstrophied bladder mucosa is well known; 95% are adenocarcinomas, and 3% to 5% are squamous cell carcinomas. Most of the malignant tumors (60%) associated with an exstrophy of the bladder occur during the fourth and fifth decades of life. Of the remaining, about 20% each occur after 60 years and before 40 years. Here we present a case in which squamous cell carcinoma developed in an unrepaired exstrophy of the bladder. We present the management of the case and a brief review of the literature.

        Optimization of Lipase Production using Differential Evolution

        Differential Evolution (DE) coupled with Response Surface Methodology (RSM) has been used for the optimization of extracellular lipolytic enzyme production by Rhizopus oryzae NRRL 3562 through sold state fermentation. The input space of the experimentally validated RSM-model was optimized using a novel Differential Evolution approach, which works based on the natural selection and survival of the fittest concepts of the biological world. The maximum lipase activity of 96.52 U/gds was observed with the DE stated optimum values of 35.59oC, 1.50, 5.28, and 4.83 days for temperature, liquid to solid ratio, pH, and incubation time respectively. The optimal levels of control parameters namely number of population, generations, crossover operator, and mutation constant were equal to 20, 50, 0.6, and 0.20, respectively. The developed model and its optimization are generic in nature and thus appear to be useful for the design and scale-up of the extracellular lipase production by R. oryzae NRRL 3562 through solid state fermentation.

      • FPGA-based Development of Finite State-MPC for Three-Phase Grid-Connected VSI System

        Power converters are used for grid integration of renewable sources that can achieve certain objectives through system control. Finite state - model predictive control (FS-MPC) is one of the techniques used for the grid integration of voltage source inverter (VSI) and possessing distinctive features such as fast dynamic performance and ability to incorporate constraints inherently. However, system development is one of the concern for FS-MPC due to computational delay problem. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) based system development is a way to tackle the mentioned problem because of its parallel processing nature. In this paper, FS-MPC is presented for three-phase grid-connected VSI system using modeling-based digital system design approach that is advantageous for analysis, easy debugging and FPGA-based system development. The integrated platform of MATLAB-Simulink and system generator is used for modeling and Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation to validate the system.

        A novel approach for designing of variability aware low-power logic gates

        Metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are continuously scaling down in the nanoscale region to improve the functionality of integrated circuits. The scaling down of MOSFET devices causes short-channel effects in the nanoscale region. In nanoscale region, leakage current components are increasing, resulting in substantial power dissipation. Very large-scale integration designers are constantly exploring different effective methods of mitigating the power dissipation. In this study, a transistor-level input-controlled stacking (ICS) approach is proposed for minimizing significant power dissipation. A low-power ICS approach is extensively discussed to verify its importance in low-power applications. Circuit reliability is monitored for process and voltage and temperature variations. The ICS approach is designed and simulated using Cadence’s tools and compared with existing low-power and high-speed techniques at a 22-nm technology node. The ICS approach decreases power dissipation by 84.95% at a cost of 5.89 times increase in propagation delay, and improves energy dissipation reliability by 82.54% compared with conventional circuit for a ring oscillator comprising 5-inverters.

        Phytochemical analysis and antimicrobial potential of Nigrospora sphaerica (Berk. & Broome) Petch, a fungal endophyte isolated from Dillenia indica L.

        Endophytic fungi from medicinal plants are a rich source of new biologically active compounds. In the present study, an endophytic fungus Nigrospora sphaerica (Berk. & Broome) Petch was isolated from Dillenia indica L and was characterized morphologically and at molecular levels. The isolated fungus was investigated for antibacterial activity, antifungal activity, antioxidant activity, total phenolics and flavonoids content, and its responsible bioactive molecules. The toxicity test revealed that the crude extract of Nigrospora sphaerica inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria, i.e., E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The value of MIC (Minimum inhibitory concentration) ranges from 82–115 µg/mL for the selected bacteria. The isolated endophytic fungus exhibited the highest inhibition against the Fusarium oxysporum (72%) and the lowest inhibition against Aspergillus niger (55%). The maximum scavenging activity was 88.1% at 600 µg/mL with an IC50 value of 85 µg/mL. GC–MS (Gas chromatography-Mass spectroscopy) analysis of the ethyl acetate extract revealed the presence of more than 40 compounds. Some of the major compounds present in extract were 1H-Indene, 1-methylene-(3.64%), Dodecane (8.52%), Tetradecane (11.59%), (-)-Mellein (3.85%), Hexadecane (10.13%), 1,2,5-Oxadiazole-3,4-dicarboxamide (5.95%), Octadecane (6.46%) and Benzoic acid, 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl ester. The compounds present in the extracts have various biological activities such as antiviral, antioxidant, insecticidal, cytotoxic, antihyperglycemic, antibacterial, antifungal activity. The compounds present in the extract can be used in clinical trials for further applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on bioactive molecules produced by Nigrospora sphaerica isolated from Dillenia indica L. having antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

        Efficacy of Adjunctive High Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of Right Prefrontal Cortex in Adolescent Mania: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Study

        Objective: To examine the efficacy of adjunctive right prefrontal high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment in adolescent mania patients as compared to sham stimulation. Methods: Twenty six right handed patients aged 12-17 years diagnosed with bipolar mania were randomized to receive daily sessions of active or sham rTMS (20 Hz, 110% of motor threshold, 20 trains, 10 s intertrain interval) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for 10 days. Mania was rated using Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Clinical Global Impression (CGI) at baseline, and after 5th and 10th rTMS. Results: For YMRS scores, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a significant main effect (F=44.49, degree of freedom [df]=1.2/29.29, p<0.001, Greenhouse-Geisser corrected, effect size η2=0.65), but the interaction effect was not significant (F=0.03, df=1.2/29.29, p=0.912, Greenhouse-Geisser corrected). For CGI-Severity, repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant main effect (F=24.49, df=1.42/34.21, p<0.001, Greenhouse-Geisser corrected, effect size η2=0.51), but the interaction effect was not significant (F=0.06, df=1.2/29.29, p=0.881, Greenhouse-Geisser corrected). Conclusion: High-frequency right prefrontal rTMS was found to be ineffective as add-on to standard pharmacotherapy in adolescent mania.
