Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental endocrine disrupting chemical that affects reproduction in wildlife and human beings and has been shown to mimic the actions of estrogens. BPA has been thought to be a harmful compound to human beings as well as wildlife. However, there have been few reports on the effect of BPA on movement capability or weights of several organs of animals. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the effect of BPA on weights of several organs and movement capability. BPA exposure was performed in ICR male mouse at dose levels of 0.015, 1.5 or 30 mg/ml in the drinking water for 8 weeks. To evaluate the effect on movement capability, 30 min swimming was applied to mouse administrated with various doses of BPA. After experimental treatment for 8 weeks, mice were sacrificed, and experiments were performed for serolog ical evaluation and comparison of organ weights. There were no differences in serological parameters such as blood cholesterol, blood glucose. total serum protein and serum LDH activity among all groups. There were no change in weights of body and several organs. except spleen between BPA-treated and nontreated mouse. The movement capabilities were decreased in the mice treated with BPA. Electron micrographs of cross sectioned skeletal muscle fibers showed that administration of BPA caused swelling of sarcoplasmic reticulum. These results suggested that BPA may cause the structural transformation of skeletal muscle fibers and then may induce the decrease of movement capability.

We developed an occupational therapy tool to maintain and improve the cognitive function for the elderly who have senile dementia. 86 elderly people took a mininal mental state examination (MMSE) for the therapy to perform the occupational therapy, and divided into three groups based on avarage ages and MMSE values. The occupational therapy was treated three times per week for 10 weeks. The results showed that there were significant differences in the performing scores before and after the treatment ; the scores for the occupational therapy were increased significantly (p<0.001) and the performing time was shortened from 6-week throughout 10-week regimen. This study was to examine the effect on the activity of antioxidant enzymes by occupational therapy. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, Glutathion-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were increased to the normal standard by the occupational therapy for the elderly having dementia. The recovery of activities of antioxidant enzymes was obvious in severe demented elderly compared to those in normal or mild demented elderly. These results suggest that the occupational therapy had an beneficial effect on the protection against the oxidative stress especially for severe demented elderly, and the occupational tool need to be modified so as to improve the protection against the oxidative stress for normal and/or mild demented elderly.
Metastasis-associated protein 1 enhances angiogenesis by stabilization of HIF-1alpha.

<P>Metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1) is highly upregulated in cancer cells with metastatic potential; however, the molecular mechanism by which MTA1 increases the metastatic potential of cancer cells is unknown. We characterized the functional consequences of MTA1 overexpression in cancer cells with an emphasis on its potential role as a deacetylator of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha). MTA1 increased the expression of HIF-1alpha protein, but did not increase the expression of its mRNA. Glutathione S-transferase pull-down and coimmunoprecipitation assays demonstrated direct interaction of MTA1 with HIF-1alpha both in vitro and in vivo. Immunoprecipitation and acetylation assays also showed that MTA1 has deacetylation activity on HIF-1alpha in vivo. Moreover, MTA1 increased the transcriptional activity of HIF-1alpha and enhanced the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, a target molecule of HIF-1alpha. Conditioned medium collected from MTA1 transfectants also increased angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo, probably through enhanced HIF-1alpha stabilization. These results indicate that MTA1 enhances angiogenesis by stabilization of the HIF-1alpha protein, which is closely related to the increased metastatic potential of cancer cells with high MTA1 expression.</P>

<P>The present study examined 469 commercially available fermented alcoholic beverages (FABs), including beer (draft, microbrewed, and pasteurized), fruit wine (grape and others), refined rice wine, and yakju (raw and pasteurized). Samples were screened for Escherichia coli and eight foodborne pathogens (Bacillus cereus, Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Yersinia enterocolitica), and the aerobic plate count, lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, fungi, and total coliforms were also enumerated. Microbrewed beer contained the highest number of microorganisms (average aerobic plate count, 3.5; lactic acid bacteria, 2.1; acetic acid bacteria, 2.0; and fungi, 3.6 log CFU/ml), followed by draft beer and yakju (P < 0.05), whereas the other FABs contained <25 CFU/25 ml microorganisms. Unexpectedly, neither microbial diversity nor microbial count correlated with the alcohol content (4.7 to 14.1%) or pH (3.4 to 4.2) of the product. Despite the harsh conditions, coliforms (detected in 23.8% of microbrewed beer samples) and B. cereus (detected in all FABs) were present in some products. B. cereus was detected most frequently in microbrewed beer (54.8% of samples) and nonpasteurized yakju (50.0%), followed by pasteurized yakju (28.8%), refined rice wine (25.0%), other fruit wines (12.3%), grape wine (8.6%), draft beer (5.6%), and pasteurized beer (2.2%) (P < 0.05). The finding that spore-forming B. cereus and coliform bacteria can survive the harsh conditions present in alcoholic beverages should be taken into account (alongside traditional quality indicators such as the presence of lactic acid-producing bacteria, acetic acid-producing bacteria, or both) when developing manufacturing systems and methods to prolong the shelf life of high-quality FAB products. New strategic quality management plans for various FABs are needed.</P>

This study was conducted to investigate if the supplement formula may improve alcohol metabolism in healthy adult men. In a double-blinded, randomized, crossover study, subjects were administrated yeast extract mixtures (YEM, n=15), Hovenia dulcis mixtures (HDM, n=15), placebo (PLA, n=15), and control (CON, n=15) in an oral dose followed by one week washout periods. At each visit (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 week), subjects drank 450 mL, 20.1 percent alcohol after administered mixtures. Blood was drawn periodically (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 15 hours). Fifteen subjects completed the protocol and were included in the analysis. Plasma ethanol concentration was lower in YEM (10 percent) and the HDM (5 percent) groups. The area under the curves (AUC) and Cmax for plasma ethanol were significantly decreased only in the YEM group, when compared with the CON group. The AUC and Cmax for plasma acetaldehyde concentration were significantly decreased in the YEM (45 and 54 percent) and the HDM (35 and 53 percent) groups respectively, when compared with PLA (p<0.01). Together, these findings validate that YEM or HDM improved alcohol metabolism and hangover syndromes, leading to reduce alcohol concentration and acetaldehyde concentration without adverse effects.
