Single phase of orthorhombic Li2SiO3 was synthesized via a novel soft-chemical synthesis method, water assisted solid state reaction method at 343-353K for 60 min. The crystal structure of the samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation revealed that the estimated size of the particles is 50-200 nm. The XRD patterns and SEM images were compared to those of samples by a conventional solid state method at 1173K for 4 h. (C) 2017 The Ceramic Society of Japan. All rights reserved.

We report novel soft chemical synthesis method, solid hydratethermal reaction (SHR) method as a new soft chemistry. This method is very simple and can synthesize the ceramic materials just by storing the mixture of raw materials added a small amount of water in a reactor at low temperature below 373 K. For example, nanosize YVO4 (under 100 nm in diameter) was obtained using the SHR method.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to clarify the relationship between white matter tracts and cognitive symptoms in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: We examined the cognitive functions of 17 children with high-functioning ASD and 18 typically developing (TD) controls and performed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography. We compared the results between the groups and investigated the correlations between the cognitive scores and DTI parameters within each group. Results: The Comprehension scores in the ASD group exhibited a positive correlation with mean diffusivity (MD) in the forceps minor (F minor). In the TD group, the Comprehension scores were positively correlated with fractional anisotropy (FA) in the right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFO) and left anterior thalamic radiation (ATR), and negatively correlated with MD in the left ATR, radial diffusivity (RD) in the right IFO, and RD in the left ATR. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between the Matching Numbers scores and MD in the left uncinate fasciculus and F minor, and RD in the F minor. Furthermore, the Sentence Questions scores exhibited a positive correlation with RD in the right inferior longitudinal fasciculus. Relative to TD controls, the specific tract showing a strong correlation with the cognitive scores was reduced in the ASD group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that white matter tracts connecting specific brain areas may exhibit a weaker relationship with cognitive functions in children with ASD, resulting in less efficient cognitive pathways than those observed in TD children.

Lithium orthophosphate Li3PO4 nanoparticles were synthesized through a water assisted solid state reaction (WASSR) method. The nanoparticles obtained in this study adopt a stable orthorhombic structure (beta-type), which is a low temperature phase, in a single phase with high crystallinity. The Li3PO4 nanoparticles have a granular particle morphology and the particle size is less than 50 nm.

Background: Acute exacerbation of chronic fibrotic idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (AE-IIP) is associated with a high mortality rate. In 2016, the International Working Group classified the etiology of AE-IIP into idiopathic and triggered. Several factors can trigger AE-IIP; however, the triggers associated with the worst prognosis have not been identified. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognosis of patients with various types of AE-IIP, particularly infection-triggered, non-infection-triggered, and idiopathic AE-IIPs. Methods: We retrospectively collected data for 128 patients with chronic fibrotic IIP (CF-IIP) who were hospitalized because of respiratory failure during the period between April 2009 and March 2019 at Juntendo University Hospital. There were 79 patients who developed AE-IIP, and 21 patients who developed bacterial pneumonia combined with CF-IIP. AE-IIP was classified into idiopathic, infection-triggered, and non-infection-triggered. We analyzed differences in patient characteristics, examination findings, and prognosis among the types. Finally, we evaluated risk factors for early death due to AE-IIPs. Results: Idiopathic, infection-triggered, and non-infection-triggered AE-IIPs were diagnosed in 34, 25, and 20 patients, respectively. The survival time was significantly longer for bacterial pneumonia combined with IIP than for AE-IIP. Moreover, the survival time was significantly longer for infection-triggered AE-IIP than for idiopathic or non-infection-triggered AE-IIP. The mortality rate was significantly lower with infection-triggered AEIIP than with other types of AE-IIP. Finally, a multivariate analysis revealed that radiological findings at the time of onset of AE-IIPs and AE-IIP patterns were independent risk factors for early death. Conclusion: Our results suggest that patients with infection-triggered AE-IIP may have a better prognosis than those with other types of AE-IIP.

Cytological examination is widely used as a diagnostic tool because of the ease of collecting cells from the involved area. However, the diagnostic yield of cytological examination is unsatisfactory; the reasons include sampling error, poorly prepared samples, small numbers of malignant cells, and low grades of cellular atypia. In this study, we focused on the high infectivity of adenovirus towards epithelial cells and applied the luciferase-expressing adenoviral vector to a new cancer cell detection tool. In addition, adenoviral infectivity was enhanced by modifying viral fiber proteins. The sensitivity of the diagnostic tool was tested using the NCI-H1299 lung cancer cell line, and validated in body fluid samples from cancer patients with a variety of etiology. Results showed that the adenovirus efficiently transfected NCI-H1299 with high sensitivity. Only 10 cancer cells were sufficient for detection of luciferase signals. In body fluid samples, the adenovirus confirmed the diagnosis for malignant and benign cancer, but not in non-epithelial cell derived samples. This study provides proof-of-concept for a more reliable and sensitive diagnostic tool for epithelium-derived cancer.
