Mechanism of ovalling vibrations of cylindrical shells in cross flow

Uematsu, Yasushi,Tsujiguchi, Noboru,Yamada, Motohiko Techno-Press 2001 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.4 No.2

The mechanism of wind-induced ovalling vibrations of cylindrical shells is numerically investigated by using a vortex method. The subject of this paper is limited to a two-dimensional structure in the subcritical regime. The aerodynamic stability of the ovalling vibrations in the second to fourth circumferential modes is discussed, based on the results of a forced-vibration test. In the analysis, two modal configurations are considered; one is symmetric and the other is anti-symmetric with respect to a diameter parallel to the flow direction. The unsteady pressures acting on a vibrating cylinder are simulated and the work done by them for one cycle of a harmonic motion is computed. The effects of a splitter plate on the flow around the cylinder as well as on the aerodynamic stability of the ovalling vibrations are also discussed. The consideration on the mechanism of ovalling vibrations is verified by the results of a free-vibration test.

Wind-induced dynamic response and its load estimation for structural frames of circular flat roofs with long spans

Uematsu, Yasushi,Yamada, Motohiko Techno-Press 2002 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.5 No.1

This paper describes a simple method for evaluating the design wind loads for the structural frames of circular flat roofs with long spans. The dynamic response of several roof models were numerically analyzed in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain by using wind pressure data obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. The instantaneous displacement and bending moment of the roof were computed, and the maximum load effects were evaluated. The results indicate that the wind-induced oscillation of the roof is generally dominated by the first mode and the gust effect factor approach can be applied to the evaluation of the maximum load effects. That is, the design wind load can be represented by the time-averaged wind pressure multiplied by the gust effect factor for the first mode. Based on the experimental results for the first modal force, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor is provided as a function of the geometric and structural parameters of the roof and the turbulence intensity of the approach flow. The equivalent design pressure coefficients, which reproduce the maximum load effects, are also discussed. A simplified model of the pressure coefficient distribution is presented.

Wind-induced dynamic response and its load estimation for structural frames of single-layer latticed domes with long spans

        Uematsu, Yasushi,Sone, Takayuki,Yamada, Motohiko,Hongo, Takeshi Techno-Press 2002 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.5 No.6

The main purpose of this study is to discuss the design wind loads for the structural frames of single-layer latticed domes with long spans. First, wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points on dome models in a wind tunnel. Then, the dynamic response of several models is analyzed in the time domain, using the pressure data obtained from the wind tunnel experiment. The nodal displacements and the resultant member stresses are computed at each time step. The results indicate that the dome's dynamic response is generally dominated by such vibration modes that contribute to the static response significantly. Furthermore, the dynamic response is found to be almost quasi-static. Then, a series of quasi-static analyses, in which the inertia and damping terms are neglected, is made for a wide range of the dome's geometry. Based on the results, a discussion is made of the design wind load. It is found that a gust effect factor approach can be used for the load estimation. Finally, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor and a simple model of the pressure coefficient distribution are provided.

How intercultural experience affects university students’ gender views: potential for transforming higher education in Japan

        Uematsu‑Ervasti, Kiyoko,Kawachi, Kumiko 서울대학교 교육연구소 2022 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.23 No.4

Reducing gender disparities in Japan is an urgent issue that requires the attention of multilevel stakeholders, including higher education institutions. Under Sustainable Development Goal 4, target 4.7 calls for educational institutions, including universities, to explore innovative approaches to tackle issues such as gender inequality. The transition from student life to adulthood is a crucial time for university students as they face and become aware of gender inequalities in society. This study examines various opportunities in higher education, such as short study-abroad programs and globalization-related coursework, that positively influence university students’ understanding of others and potentially broaden their gender perspectives. Historically, the impacts of studying abroad and intercultural experiences have only been subjectively assessed based on participants’ self-evaluation. However, by using the Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory, quantified data can be used to evaluate the nature and form of depth-based growth and compare three cases for potential changes before, after, or during educational programs. The study’s findings shed light on opportunities and barriers to transforming students’ views especially on gender issues. The study reveals (1) signs of improvement in students’ gender perspectives after participating in a short study-abroad program, (2) that international students with diverse experiences tend to demonstrate lower gender traditionalism, and (3) that freshmen and sophomores have relatively moderate views on gender norms, indicating that further intervention could improve their gender perspectives. The results showcase the possibility of developing meaningful study-abroad programs and other coursework to drive the positive change in students’ perspectives, especially regarding gender.

Teachers as Intercultural and Ethical Profession

        Uematsu-Ervasti Kiyoko(키요코 우에마츠) 대구대학교 다문화사회정책연구소 2015 현대사회와 다문화 Vol.5 No.1

In response to the waves of globalization, higher education institutions around the world are experiencing the integration of the international dimension. Likewise, the changing demand for students in teacher education ought to be acknowledged as they face challenges to navigate through growing diversity in their future classrooms. Awhile education plays a critical role in seeking ways to co-exist with diversity, teachers in particular have responsibility to teach pupils about ‘positive contributions’ through the building of democratic communities. Drawing on the ongoing effort of Intercultural Teacher Education (ITE) program at University of Oulu in Finland, this article provides insights on preparing student teachers for growing multicultural environments but also as ethical professionals.

Elongation of Contact Length on the Line of Action in Roll Forming of Gears

Seizo Uematsu,Sung-Ki Lyu 대한기계학회 2003 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.17 No.3

The elongation of contact length on the line of action is considered with particular reference for roll forming of gears, and for dynamic behavior of the tooth in meshing. However there is no paper that discuss the elongation of contact length in the load meshing of gears. Based on our investigation. the contact length on the line of action elongates more than the kinematically calculated value. In rolling. as the tool approaches the workpiece, the center distance of the gears decreases by a small amount. But. the elongation of contact length is sensitive. Therefore, the contact point on the line of action is difficult to be determined, which complicates the tooth analysis. I n this study, the exact relation between the elongation of contact length and the tooth space over the recess or before the approach are revealed by experiments and kinematic theory. This analytical result applies not only for rolling, but also for the single flank meshing which is done under constant center distance.
