<P>The increasing prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) strains in intensive care units has caused major problems in public health worldwide. Our aim was to determine whether this phage could be used as an alternative therapeutic agent against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, specifically CRAB clinical isolates, using a mouse model. Ten bacterio-phages that caused lysis in CRAB strains, including bla(OXA-66-like) genes, were isolated. YMC13/01/C62 ABA BP (phage B phi-C62), which showed the strongest lysis activity, was chosen for further study by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), host range test, one-step growth and phage adsorption rate, thermal and pH stability, bacteriolytic activity test, genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, and therapeutic effect of phage using a mouse intranasal infection model. The phage B phi-C62 displayed high stability at various temperatures and pH values and strong cell lysis activity in vitro. The phage B phi-C62 genome has a double-stranded linear DNA with a length of 44,844 bp, and known virulence genes were not identified in silico. In vivo study showed that all mice treated with phage B phi-C62 survived after intranasal bacterial challenge. Bacterial clearance in the lung was observed within 3 days after bacterial challenge, and histologic damage also improved significantly; moreover, no side effects were observed. IMPORTANCE In our study, the novel A. baumannii phage B phi-C62 was characterized and evaluated in vitro, in silico, and in vivo. These results, including strong lytic activities and the improvement of survival rates, showed the therapeutic potential of the phage B phi-C62 as an antimicrobial agent. This study reports the potential of a novel phage as a therapeutic candidate or nontoxic disinfectant against CRAB clinical isolates in vitro and in vivo.</P>

Simulations of cavitation flow and hull pressure fluctuation for a marine propeller operating behind a hull using the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) are presented. A full hull body submerged under the free surface is modeled in the computational domain to simulate directly the wake field of the ship at the propeller plane. Simulations are performed in design and ballast draught conditions to study the effect of cavitation number. And two propellers with slightly different geometry are simulated to validate the detectability of the numerical simulation. All simulations are performed using a commercial CFD software FLUENT. Cavitation patterns of the simulations show good agreement with the experimental results carried out in Samsung CAvitation Tunnel (SCAT). The simulation results for the hull pressure fluctuation induced by a propeller are also compared with the experimental results showing good agreement in the tendency and aplitude, especially, for the first blade frequency.

대비(contrast)는 영상의 특성을 나타내는 대표적인 객관적인 척도이다. 비록 대비 측정 방법에 관한 연구가 오랫동안 진행되었으나, 인간이 인지 대비(perceived contrast)의 측정은 관련된 여러 분야에서 여전히 연구의 대상이 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 영상의 공간 주파수에 따른 인간의 대비 민감도(contrast sensitivity)에 차이가 발생한다는 점에 착안하여, 인간의 시각 인지 시스템을 고려한 대비 측정 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 방법은 다중의 공간 주파수 대역(spatial frequency band)에 따른 다중 스케일의 지역적 대비 측정 방법, 대비 항상성(contrast constancy)를 고려한 대비 측정 방법, 영상을 단색 채널과 컬러 채널로 분리함으로써 대비를 측정하는 컬러 대비 측정 방법을 통합하는 인지 대비 측정 방법이다.

For High dynamic image sequence, reduction in timely visual adaptation for older adults reduces accessibility to multimedia contents. This paper presents a computational model for reduction in sensitivity of Human Visual System using decay functions and provides background for development of efficient adaptation models in dynamic image sequence researches. We suggest an adaptation model for light adaptation in MPEG-21 multimedia environment.

Removal of gas-phase elemental mercury by iodine- and chlorine-impregnated activated carbons

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Gas-phase Hg<SUP>0</SUP> adsorption experiments were carried out using iodine (I)- and chorine (Cl)-impregnated granular activated carbons in a laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor. To verify the effect of chemical loading contents on removal of mercury, different concentrations of chemicals such as KI and HCl were applied. In addition, two types of impregnated activated carbons (ACs) were tested at different temperature conditions. The characteristics of impregnated ACs were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy for surface morphology and chemical contents. BET analysis for surface area and X- ray spectroscopy for identification of mercury compounds on the carbon surface were conducted.</P> <P>Hg<SUP>0</SUP> removal efficiency increased with temperature in the case of I-impregnated ACs, while the removal efficiency decreased with temperature for Cl-impregnated ACs. According to increasing chemical content, the surface area decreased and the morphology of carbon became more complicated. Both types of impregnated ACs showed reasonable efficiency for gas-phase Hg<SUP>0</SUP> removal by adsorption.</P>
