The purpose of this study is to describe the importance of early identification and prevention of social emotional and behavioral delays, and to suggest a three-tiered prevention and intervention approach for improving young children’s social emotional competence. Tier 1 approaches include universal screening focused on early identification of social emotional problems for young children. Tier 2 approaches include small group instruction for children and families in need of further supports and services. Finally, Tier 3 services are reserved for those few children and families who need more intensive, individualized supports and services to be successful in classroom and community environments. The necessities of universal screening for social emotional and behavioral competence and the methods of systematic, on-going intervention and evaluation were further discussed to provide rich and responsive environments for those children needing more intensive interventions.

Comparison of Korean and US Young Children's Development to Establish the Cultural Appropriateness of the ASQ, a Developmental Screening Instrument
한국 영유아를 대상으로 한 발달 선별도구의 심리측정학적 연구

Accurate and efficient developmental screening measures are critical for early identification for children who are at risk and with developmental delay. However, few reliable and valid tests are available in Korea. Ages and Stages Questionnaires(ASQ), one of the most popular and well-studied instrument in the U.S. was chosen for study with infants and young children in Korea. The results consist means(SD), reliability including Pearson product moment correlation and Cronbach's alpha, and validity including cutoff points, and classification statistics. Over 3000 young children from 4month to 60month throughout Korean were included. Results shows favorable reliability and validity. 이 연구의 결과들은 국내의 영유아를 대상으로 깊이 있는 심리측정학적 연구를 수행하여 이의 신뢰도 및, 절선점수 파악, 공인타당도를 구축하였다. 이의 결과들은 ASQ가 선별도구로서 적절함을 제시함으로, 국내의 장애 영유아 및 발달지체의 위험에 있는 대상을 적기에 발견할 수 있는 체제의 구축에 기여할 수 있다고 본다.
