        Song, K.J.,Ko, R.K.,Kim, H.S.,Ha, H.S.,Ha, D.W.,Oh, S.S.,Park, C.,Yoo, S.-I.,Kim, M.W.,Kim, C.J.,Joo, J.H. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2007 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.17 No.2

<P>The degree of ferromagnetism of Ni-Wy alloys decreases as W-content y increases. Both the saturation magnetization <I>M</I> sat and Curie temperature <I>T</I> c decrease linearly with W-content y, and both <I>M</I> sat and <I>T</I> c go to zero at critical concentration of yc ~9.50 at.% W. To compare with Ni-W alloys, the magnetic properties of a series of both as-rolled (non-textured) and annealed (biaxially textured) [Ni97at.%-W3at.%]100-x-Cux alloy tapes with compositions x = 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 at.%, were studied. Characterization methods included XRD analyses to investigate the biaxial texturing of the annealed [Ni-W]-Cu alloy tapes and studies of the magnetization for both as-rolled and annealed [Ni-W]-Cu alloy tapes. Both the isothermal mass magnetizations <I>M</I>(<I>H</I>) of a series of samples at different fixed temperatures and <I>M</I>(<I>T</I>) in fixed field, were measured. The effect of Cu addition on both the saturation magnetization and Curie temperature Tc of the Ni97at.%-W3at.% alloy was investigated.</P>

Characterization of Phosphoinositide-3-kinase, Class 3 (PIK3C3) Gene and Association Tests with Quantitative Traits in Pigs

        Kim, J.H.,Choi, B.H.,Lim, H.T.,Park, E.W.,Lee, S.H.,Seo, B.Y.,Cho, I.C.,Lee, J.G.,Oh, S.J.,Jeon, J.T. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2005 Animal Bioscience Vol.18 No.12

This study deals with the characterization of porcine PIK3C3 and association tests with quantitative traits. PIK3C3 belongs to the class 3 PI3Ks that participate in the regulation of hepatic glucose output, glycogen synthase, and antilipolysis in typical insulin target cells such as those in the such as liver, muscle system, and fat. On the analysis of full-length mRNA sequence, the length of the PIK3C3 CDS was recorded as 2,664 bps. As well, nucleotide and amino acid identities between human and pig subjects were 92% and 99%, respectively. Five SNPs were detected over 5 exons. We performed genotyping by using a SNP C2604T on exon24 for 145 F$_2$ animals (from a cross between Korean native boars and Landrace sows) by PCR-RFLP analysis with Hpy8I used to investigate the relationship between growth and fat depot traits. In the total association analysis, which doesn' consider transmission disequilibrium, the SNP showed a significant effect (p<0.05) on body weight and carcass fat at 30 weeks of age as well as a highly significant effect (p<0.01) on back fat. In an additional sib-pair analysis, C allele still showed positive and significant effects (p<0.05) on back fat thickness and carcass fat. Moreover, the effects of C allele on the means of within-family components for carcass fat and back fat were estimated as 2.76 kg and 5.07 mm, respectively. As a result, the SNP of porcine PIK3C3 discovered in this study could be utilized as a possible genetic marker for the selection of pigs that possess low levels of back fat and carcass fat at the slaughter weight.

Si 및 C이 복합첨가된 TiAl-Nb 합금의 열적안정성 및 기계적 성질

        김정환,김성웅,이호년,김민철,오명훈,위당문 대한금속재료학회 2004 대한금속·재료학회지 Vol.42 No.8

Thermal stability of the lamellar microstructure in TiAI-Nb alloys containing Si and C was investigated by partial melting experiments. The proper compositions which have enough thermal stability to be used as a seed material were found for TiAl-Nb-Si-C alloy system. The lamellar microstructure of the Ti-44.5A1-3Nb-0.6Si-0.2C and Ti-45Al-2Nb-0.6Si-0.2C alloys was successfully aligned parallel to the growth direction by directional solidification using Ti-44.5A1-3Nb-0.6Si-0.2C alloy as a seed material. The DS ingots of these alloys exhibited a excellent combination of room-temperature ductility (8.5%) and high-temperature yield strength (700 MPa at 800℃). Nb was not an effective element to improve the lamellar stability. However, adding a small amount of Si and C to the TiAl-Nb system was very effective to improve the thermal stability of the lamellar microstructure.

Long-term outdoor cultivation by perfusing spent medium for biodiesel production from Chlorella minutissima

        Oh, S.H.,Kwon, M.C.,Choi, W.Y.,Seo, Y.C.,Kim, G.B.,Kang, D.H.,Lee, S.Y.,Lee, H.Y. Society for Bioscience and Bioengineering, Japan ; 2010 Journal of bioscience and bioengineering Vol.110 No.2

A unique perfusion process was developed to maintain high concentrations of marine alga, Chlorella minutissima. This method is based on recycling cells by continuous feeding with warm spent sea water from nuclear power plants, which has very similar properties as sea water. A temperature of at least 30 oC in a 200 L photo-bioreactor was maintained in this system by perfusion of the thermal plume for 80 days in the coldest season. The maximum cell concentration and total lipid content was 8.3 g-dry wt./L and 23.2 %, w/w, respectively, under mixotrophic conditions. Lipid production was found to be due to a partially or non-growth related process, which implies that large amounts of biomass are needed for a high accumulation of lipids within the cells. At perfusion rates greater than 1.5 L/h, the temperature of the medium inside the reactor was around 30 oC, which was optimal for cell growth. For this system, a perfusion rate of 2.8 L/h was determined to be optimal for maintaining rapid cell growth and lipid production during outdoor cultivation. It was absolutely necessary to maintain the appropriate perfusion rate so that the medium temperature was optimal for cell growth. In addition, the lipids produced using this process were shown to be feasible for biodiesel production since the lipid composition of C. minutissima grown under these conditions consisted of 17 % (w/w) of C16 and 47% (w/w) of C18. The combined results of this study clearly demonstrated that the discharged energy of the thermal plume could be reused to cultivate marine alga by maintaining a relatively constant temperature in an outdoor photo-bioreactor without the need for supplying any extra energy, which could allow for cheap production of biodiesel from waste energy.

한우 비육에 관한 연구 1 . Methylthiouracil 첨가 및 Estradiol 17β - Cypionate 주사가 약령 모우 비육에 미치는 효과

        김창기 ( C K Kim ),이택원 ( T W Lee ),김종욱 ( J W Kim ),배대식 ( D S Bae ),오선균 ( S K Oh ),조지훈 ( C H Cho ),김법회 ( B H Kim ),김상렬 ( S Y Kim ),배신석 ( S S Bae ) 한국축산학회 1971 한국축산학회지 Vol.13 No.1

This study was performed to affirm any effects of methylthiouracil and estradiol 17β-cypionate administered to young bulls for short term fattening. Eighteen bulls of Korean native breed, approximately 1.5 to 2 years of age and 260㎏ to 360㎏ in weight, were used in this study. All bulls had received a basal ration of soiling corn and concentrate made up of 55% grains, 40% brans and 5% others, in a period of 40 days. Bulls were divided into six groups as follows: group C was not treated, group M-2 received 2g of methylthiouracil per day, group M-3 received 3g of methylthiouracil per day, group EM-0 was injected intramusculary with 25㎎ of estradiol 17β-cypionate in the neck region 10 days after the beginning of the fattening period, group EM-2 was injected with estradiol 17β-cypionate as above mentioned and simultaneously received 2g of methylthiouracil per day, and group EM-3 was injected with estradiol 17β-cypionate as above mentioned and simultaneously received 3g of methylthiouracil per day. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The average daily gain was for group C: 0.83㎏, group M-2: 1.07㎏, group M-3: 1.40㎏, group EM-0, 0.93㎏, group EM-2: 0.95㎏, and group EM-3: 1.18㎏. The M-3 group gained significantly(P$lt;0.05) more weight than C and EM-0 group. There were no significant differences in the average daily gain between the groups injected with estradiol 17β-eypionate and the control group. 2. The average daily concentrate intake was as follows: group C: 5.47㎏, group M-2: 5.00㎏, group M-3: 4.52㎏, group EM-0: 5.21㎏, group EM-2: 4.35㎏, and group EM-3: 4.61㎏. The consumption of concentrate was decreased by 17% in the M-3 group compared with the C group. There was no significant difference in the soiling corn intake among these groups. 3. Feed consumed for 1㎏ gain were decreased by the supplementation of methylthiouracil. The consumption of DCP for 1㎏ gain was in group C: 0.82㎏, group M-2: 0.59㎏, group M-3: 0.41㎏, group EM-0: 0.70㎏, group EM-2: 0.59㎏, and group EM-3: 0.50㎏. The amounts of TDN required were; group C: 6.57㎏, group M-2: 4.76㎏, group M-3: 3.39㎏, group EM-0: 5.67㎏, group EM-Z: 4.87㎏, and group EM-3: 4.08㎏. The consumption of DCP and TDN for 1㎏ gain in the M-3 group was about a half of that in the C group. 4. There was not any significant difference in the increase in body measurements among the various groups. 5. The average margins in the fattening period of 40 days were for group C: 2,950won, group M-2: 5,327won, group M-3: 9,158won, group EM-0: 3,310won, group EM-2: 3,623won, and group EM-3: 5,575won. The margin of group M-3 was about three times higher than that of group C. In short, this experiment demonstrated that methylthiouracil when fed to young native Korean bulls at the proper level 40 days before slaughter would bring a noticeable effect on weight gain, feed efficiency and economic advantage. There were no advantages from the simultaneous injecting estradiol 17β-cypionate with methylthiouracil. The proper supplementation level of methylthiouracil would appear to be 3g per head per day in this experiment.

Identification of Novel SNPs with Effect on Economic Traits in Uncoupling Protein Gene of Korean Native Chicken

        Oh, J.D.,Kong, H.S.,Lee, J.H.,Choi, I.S.,Lee, S.J.,Lee, S.G.,Sang, B.D.,Choi, C.H.,Cho, B.W.,Jeon, G.J.,Lee, H.K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2006 Animal Bioscience Vol.19 No.8

The avian uncoupling protein (avUCP) is a member of the mitochondrial transporter superfamily that uncouples proton entry in the mitochondrial matrix from ATP synthesis. The sequencing analysis method was used to identify nucleotide polymorphisms within the avUCP gene in Korean native chicken (KNC). This study identified ten single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the avUCP gene. We analyzed the SNPs of the avUCP gene to investigate whether polymorphism in the gene might be responsible for quantitative variations in economic traits in KNC. Three significant polymorphic sites for economic traits were avUCP C+282T (mean body weight, p<0.05), avUCP C+433T (daily percent lay, p<0.05), and avUCP T+1316C (daily percent lay, p<0.05). The frequency of each SNP was 0.125 (C+282T in avUCP gene exon 1 region), 0.150 (C+433T in avUCP gene intron 1 region), and 0.15 (T+1316C in avUCP gene exon 3 region), respectively. Among the identified SNPs, one pair of SNPs (genotype CC, C+282T and TT, avUCP C+433T) showed the highest daily percent lay (p<0.05) and mean body weight (p<0.05) and the frequency was 0.067. This study of the avUCP gene could be useful for genetic studies of this gene and selection on economic traits for KNC.

Effects of Dietary Fermented Chlorella vulgaris (CBT®) on Growth Performance, Relative Organ Weights, Cecal Microflora, Tibia Bone Characteristics, and Meat Qualities in Pekin Ducks

        Oh, S.T.,Zheng, L.,Kwon, H.J.,Choo, Y.K.,Lee, K.W.,Kang, C.W.,An, Byoung-Ki Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.1

Fermented Chlorella vulgaris was examined for its effects on growth performance, cecal microflora, tibia bone strength, and meat qualities in commercial Pekin ducks. A total of three hundred, day-old male Pekin ducks were divided into three groups with five replicates (n = 20 ducklings per replicate) and offered diets supplemented with commercial fermented C. vulgaris (CBT$^{(R)}$) at the level of 0, 1,000 or 2,000 mg/kg, respectively for 6 wks. The final body weight was linearly (p = 0.001) increased as the addition of fermented C. vulgaris into diets increased. Similarly, dietary C. vulgaris linearly increased body weight gain (p = 0.001) and feed intake (p = 0.001) especially at the later days of the feeding trial. However, there was no C. vulgaris effect on feed efficiency. Relative weights of liver were significantly lowered by dietary fermented C. vulgaris (linear effect at p = 0.044). Dietary fermented C. vulgaris did not affect total microbes, lactic acid bacteria, and coliforms in cecal contents. Finally, meat quality parameters such as meat color (i.e., yellowness), shear force, pH, or water holding capacity were altered by adding fermented C. vulgaris into the diet. In our knowledge, this is the first report to show that dietary fermented C. vulgaris enhanced meat qualities of duck meats. In conclusion, our study indicates that dietary fermented C. vulgaris exerted benefits on productivity and can be employed as a novel, nutrition-based strategy to produce value-added duck meats.

Chemical inhibitors of c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase stimulate osteoblast differentiation and bone regeneration

        Kim, J.W.,Lee, M.N.,Jeong, B.C.,Oh, S.H.,Kook, M.S.,Koh, J.T. North-Holland 2017 European journal of pharmacology Vol.806 No.-

<P>The c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase and its ligand, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), have been recently introduced to negatively regulate bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-induced osteogenesis. However, the effect of chemical inhibitors of c-Met receptor on osteoblast differentiation process has not been examined, especially the applicability of c-Met chemical inhibitors on in vivo bone regeneration. In this study, we demonstrated that chemical inhibitors of c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase, SYN1143 and SGX523, could potentiate the differentiation of precursor cells to osteoblasts and stimulate regeneration in calvarial bone defects of mice. Treatment with SYN1143 or SGX523 inhibited HGF-induced c-Met phosphorylation in MC3T3-E1 and C3H10T1/2 cells. Cell proliferation of MC3T3-E1 or C3H10T1/2 was not significantly affected by the concentrations of these inhibitors. Co-treatment with chemical inhibitor of c-Met and osteogenic inducing media enhanced osteoblast-specific genes expression and calcium nodule formation accompanied by increased Runx2 expression via c-Met receptor-dependent but Erk-Smad signaling independent pathway. Notably, the administration of these c-Met inhibitors significantly repaired critical-sized calvarial bone defects. Collectively, our results suggest that chemical inhibitors of c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase might be used as novel therapeutics to induce bone regeneration.</P>

Genomic characterization and expression analysis of complement component 9 in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus)

        Wickramaarachchi, W.D.N.,Wan, Q.,Lee, Y.,Lim, B.S.,De Zoysa, M.,Oh, M.J.,Jung, S.J.,Kim, H.C.,Whang, I.,Lee, J. Academic Press 2012 Fish & Shellfish Immunology Vol.33 No.4

The complement component 9 (C9) is a single-chain glycoprotein that mediates formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC) on the surface of target cells. Full-length C9 sequence was identified from a cDNA library of rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus), and its genomic sequence was obtained by screening and sequencing of a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) genomic DNA library of rock bream. The rock bream complement component 9 (Rb-C9) gene contains 11 exons and 10 introns and is composed of a 1782 bp complete open reading frame (ORF) that encodes a polypeptide of 593 amino acids. Sequence analysis revealed that the Rb-C9 protein contains two thrombospondin type-1domains, a low-density lipoprotein receptor domain class A, a membrane attack complex & perforin (MACPF) domain, and an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domain. Important putative transcription factor binding sites, including those for NF-κB, SP-1, C/EBP, AP-1 and OCT-1, were found in the 5' flanking region. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a close proximity of Rb-C9 with the orthologues in puffer fish, and Japanese flounder. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR analysis confirmed that Rb-C9 was constitutively expressed in all the examined tissues isolated from healthy rock bream, with highest expression occurring in liver. Pathogen challenge, including Edwardsiella tarda, Streptococcus iniae, lipopolysaccharide endotoxin and rock bream iridovirus led to up-regulation of Rb-C9 in liver but no change in peripheral blood cells. The observed response to bacterial and viral challenges and high degree of evolutionary relationship to respective orthologues, confirmed that Rb-C9 is an important immune gene, likely involved in the complement system lytic pathway of rock bream.

      • Weight loss at the first month of palliative chemotherapy predicts survival outcomes in patients with advanced gastric cancer

        Ock, C. Y.,Oh, D. Y.,Lee, J.,Kim, T. Y.,Lee, K. H.,Han, S. W.,Im, S. A.,Kim, T. Y.,Bang, Y. J. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Gastric cancer Vol.19 No.2

<P>Weight loss during chemotherapy is a significant prognostic factor for poor survival in patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). However, in most studies, weight loss was measured at the end of chemotherapy, limiting its clinical use. In this study, we evaluated whether weight loss during the first month of chemotherapy could predict survival outcomes in patients with AGC. We analyzed 719 patients with metastatic or recurrent AGC who were receiving palliative chemotherapy. We calculated the initial body mass index (BMIi), percent weight loss after 1 month of chemotherapy (Delta W (1)m), percent weight loss after last administration of chemotherapy (Delta W (end)), and average weight loss per month during chemotherapy (Delta W/m). We correlated these data with overall survival (OS) by receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves and Kaplan-Meier curves, and performed a subgroup analysis using Cox regression. The probabilities of longer OS had stronger correlations with Delta W/m and Delta W (1)m than with Delta W (end) or BMIi. A significant positive correlation between Delta W (1)m and Delta W/m (r (2) = 0.591, p < 0.001) was observed. Median OS of patients with Delta W (1)m more than 3 % was significantly shorter than in patients with less weight loss (OS: 9.7 vs. 16.3 months, p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that Delta W (1)m accompanied poor survival irrespective of other clinical characteristics. Weight loss at the very first month of palliative chemotherapy could predict unfavorable survival outcomes in AGC.</P>
