Vol.8 No.-

This study examined directions and framework for professional development of art museum professionals in Korea in light of education and training. Education and training of art museum professionals have been the critical issues of museum world since the 1980s, and the curriculums and support system have been sporadically discussed. Current practice of museum training, however, is unsystematic and very limited to meet the needs of both practicing professionals and future museum workers. In this context, the nature of professionalism of art museum workers was examined in light of core and specialized competencies of practicing professionals presented by such representative museum communities as the International Council of Museums and the American Association of Museums. The analysis of the competencies of art museum professionals, which include comprehensive abilities, knowledge, skills, and attitude, would be especially useful to develop curriculums and system of art museum training. Next, the current state of education and training for art museum professionals in Korea was analyzed in terms of university education, non-degree training programs, internships, and education and training policy for art museums. Finally, the directions and solutions for systemize education and training of art museum professionals were presented in four aspects. Above all, the human resource management policy for art museums including education and training should be developed on national level as well as institutional level. Secondly, sustained education and training programs and opportunities should be developed according to the life cycle of people. Three levels of prospective professionals in schools, school-work transition, and practicing professionals presents the unique training needs. Also, entry-level employees would have different training needs from those of mid-level and senior-level personnels. Third, development of database and guidelines of education and training programs for individual professionals and institutions is needed. Fourth, it is important that the competencies required for future museum professionals should be reflected in the development of education and training programs. Finally, diverse types of partnership between university and art museums should be developed to strengthen the effectiveness of museum training.

Vol.22 No.-

This essay suggests a way of understanding the concept of the public interest of the Art museum under the changing cultural situations. The concept of Art museum as public institution, tracing back to the inauguration of the Louvre where the nationalized collection from Aristocrats and royal family was opened to the public without entry fee, has diverse meanings, such as the preservation of Art works for the future generations, the reinforcement of public Accessibility, the educational effort for the visitors to learn About the value of high Art, and etc. With the changing cultural situations for recent thirty years, new rules of the Art museum and new meanings of its public interest have been emerging. Nowadays, the Art museum is no longer regarded as the institution for collecting and researching Art works, but as the place for entertainment where visitors enjoy diverse cultural programs. and the meaning of the public interest of the Art museum is largely focused on popularity. While Western Art museums have Already undergone many variations, Korean counterparts just begin to change. Facing different requirements to be fulfilled in one breath, Art museums in Korea have experienced errors and difficulties. This essay seeks a way to define the public interest of the Art museum by relying on two theories. One is cultural economics, and the other is politics. These theories ask on what ground supporting art by the government could be justified, and present the Answers. First, According to cultural economists, Art has non-user benefit, that is, the value which has some effects on those who don’t participate in Artistic Activities directly and causes the reluctance of the private investment. In result, demand Always exceeds supply in the supposed free market. So supporting Art by the government could be justified. Second, According to the theory of the liberalist perfectionism, the government should make efforts to help its people develop their Autonomy. Art is one of the effective means to meet the task because it doesn’t force people but invite them to enhance the quality of their lives. The public values of Art explained by these theories could be identified as the contents of the public interest which the Art museum should support. Based on these theories, the public interest of the Art museum could be understood as the intersected field of popularity and professionalism. The former without the latter leads to populism, and the latter without the former leads to elitism. After criticizing the blockbuster exhibitions which are recently all the fashion in Korea by the same principle, this essay wants to designate the conditions of the successful museum exhibition in the light of the public interest by presenting two examples from MoMa. The first sample is the exhibition “Manet and the execution of Maximilian”(2006-2007), and the second one is “Machine Art”(1934). By linking the inner issues of Art to the outer ones, and by making the museum the place for social discussions. two exhibitions increase the public values of the art museum.

Vol.24 No.2

This paper examines the process of how an art museum interpreter became familiarized with her duties and formed professional identity. For this study, Hyun-jung, an in-house interpreter for the director of a national art museum in Korea was selected as the research participant. Employing the method of narrative inquiry, her first 1.5 years at the art museum was carefully followed and observed. The data collected and analyzed includes in-depth interviews, log entries, participant’s work-related materials and self-portrait. A total of five core themes were identified as a result of the narrative analysis: Duties and Responsibilities; Context of the Art Museum; Mediation; Inner Conflicts and Identity Crisis; and Formation of Professional Identity. The research participant’s experience can be summarized as follows: Firstly, as an interpreter with no field experience, Hyun-jung was required to acquaint herself with the unfamiliar and abstruse subject called art. She was also exposed to whispering interpreting, a type of interpretation that she knew little of, resulting in a hard landing in her first job. Second, Hyun-jung found she needed to improve her flexibility and adaptability against the unpredictability in her work and meetings. This is because depending on the characteristics and the needs of the speakers, requirements for interpretation services changed, as well as the language direction, and the type of interpretation (whispering, consecutive, and sight interpretation) and her role as mediator and communication facilitator. Third, an art museum interpreter had to double as a secretary and an administrative assistant, which meant the traditional duties of an interpreter was comparatively reduced in Hyun-jung’s role. This resulted in much inner conflict and a thirst for professionality, and Hyun-jung found herself greatly discouraged and confused in terms of her professional identity. Fourth, through trial and error, Hyun-jung came to form her own strategies for interpretation, and eventually came to develop a sense of professional identity that fulfilled the expectations by the art museum: a mediator of cultures and catalyst for engaged communication.

Architects' Professional Alliance with the Furniture Design Industry in Interwar America - As Reflected in Public Exhibitions -

        Choi, Won-Joon Korea Furniture Society 2010 한국가구학회지 Vol.21 No.3

The professional alliance between disciplines of architecture and furniture design in the interwar years as displayed in the prominent architectural exhibitions of the era is interesting in the context of professionalization of American architecture. The way furniture design gradually became part of the architectural shows not only reflected but provided the practical field in which the architectural institution sought, under the new social order since the mid 1910s, a new professional cast-departing from the former milieu in the realm of high-art by the Beaux-Arts Movement. Exhibitions held by the Architectural League of New York in the 1920s revealed that the early impetus for reformation toward efficiency had been subsumed by the system of Beaux-Arts. By contrast, "The Architect and the Industrial Arts" show of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which the most prominent architects of the era exercised their professional expertise in the design of "Moderne Style" interior furnishings, clearly shows how architects, in the milieu of expanding commercial market, sought to align their profession as industrial designers.

Vol.39 No.1

The purpose of this study is to seek future directions of the development of the cadastre museum through designation of professional art organization. In order to achieve the study purpose efficiently, the study subject was limited to the cadastre museum, and the scope for the study was ranged to the present from 1972 when the Culture and Arts Promotion Act was enacted. In terms of the space, it was limited to Korea and, as for the contents, it was limited to seeking future directions of the development of the cadastre museum through the designation of professional art organization. For the survey method, it combined literature review, internet survey and interview method, and for analysis method, a descriptive analysis method was used. As a result of the analysis and as a measure for the cadastre museum to be designated as a professional art organization, it turned out as follows: First, it is desirable for the cadastre museum to be designated as professional art organization to apply. Second, it should be a NGO type in legal term. Third, its activity should be mainly with the exhibition. Fourth, the target area for application should be in Chungcheongbuk-do where the cadastre museum belongs. However, Chungcheongbuk-do has never designated a museum as a professional art organization. Therefore, the cadastre museum should promote or publicize a precedent designated in each city and province through the Korean Museum Association, etc, request that the museum be specified on the application form, and continuously request the Chungcheongbuk-do Culture and Arts Committee to appoint museum operator as a member of the committee.
