        Failed Detectives Make a Case: (Un)Solving the Poe Mystery in Matthew Pearl`s The Poe Shadow

        Edgar Allan Poe is now undoubtedly among the most representative writers of American literature. Not only are his stories and tales being widely taught in class and studied by scholars, Poe pops up everywhere in contemporary American culture. Ranging from a football team and a rock album to graphic novels and movies, Poe is continuously and diversely re-produced by the mass media. At a closer look, however, we get to see how limited and redundant this cultural re-production of Poe is in that it mostly envisions Poe as a person who is as dark and eccentric as his own gothic fictional characters. Considering that limitedness and redundancy as the indication of our over-simplistic reading of the author`s life and work that is blindly mass-produced and mass-consumed, this paper attempts to propose an alternative view of Poe. To do so, the paper first addresses the Poe controversy that begins right after his mysterious death and puts into action the violent merging of his life and work. It goes on to examine the same controversy in light of joe Moran`s cultural study on the literary celebrity system that updates the Barthesian "death of the author." Associating Moran`s insight into the mass media with the dead Poe`s popularity, the paper then examines one of the mass-produced and mass-consumed representations of Poe, Matthew Pearl`s The Poe Shadow, as an example of how a media-mediated portrayal of Poe can ironically contribute to liberating him from the restriction of the pop-cultural imagination. The paper discusses in particular the novel`s deliberate manipulation of the conventions of detective fiction by focusing on the detective characters who fail to find the truth of Poe`s death and who thus allow readers to conduct their own investigation.

        한국 근대 문학에서 에드거 앨런 포 문학의 수용

        In the article, we looked at the process of Adger Allen Poe's acceptance of literature into modern Korean literature. We looked at the translation trends of Poe's works in modern literature, and analyzed the features revealed in the acceptance process. Before looking at the translation trends of modern Korean literature, we looked at the advancedness of Poe's literature and the universality of world history. The preoccupation of Poe's literature can be summed up by romanticism and fantasy. His theory of literature is predicated on the basis that romanticism and fantasy are realized. He rebelled against the mood of moralist, sought pleasure through literature and tried to reach beauty. It tried to reach human abyss by maximizing its five senses and imagination, and as a result it was able to explore the various human emotions that lay upon souls that were not covered by prehistory literature. Therefore, romanticism and fantasy in Poe's literature are not techniques, but the liberation of a new spirit. In Korea, Poe's literature has been translated since the 1920s. Poe's literature was translated into his poems and novels through newspapers, journals and so on, and reviews of his works and writers began to pour out. The acceptance of Poe's Literature had a great influence on modern Korean literature. Poe's literary theory and writer's biography were introduced, as poems and novels were translated at the same time. Through the translation trend of Poe's literature, three facts were found in the acceptance process: The first is that the first translated poem and novel in 1922 are Satanist poetry and horror novels. Second, researchers majoring in foreign literature intensively introduced Poe's works and his theories in the first issue of 『Overseas Literature』 aimed at reviving modern Korean literature. Third, Poe's life, as much as his work, has attracted the attention of literary circles and readers, which reflect the specificity of expressionist art. 이 글에서는 애드거 앨런 포의 문학이 한국 근대문단에 수용되는 과정을 살펴보았다. 근대문학에서 포 작품의 번역 추이를 살펴보고, 수용과정에서 드러나는 특징을 분석했다. 한국 근대문학의 번역 추이를 살펴보기 앞서 포 문학이 지닌 선진성과 세계사적 보편성을 살펴보았다. 포 문학의 선취성은 낭만성과 환상성으로 요약할 수 있다. 낭만성과 환상성이 구현되는 기저에는 그의 문학이론이 전제해 있다. 그는 기존의 교훈주의 문단 풍토에 반기 를 들고, 문학을 통해 즐거움을 추구하고 아름다움에 도달하려 했다. 오감과 상상력을 극 대화하여 인간의 심연에 도달하려 했으며, 그 결과 전대 문학이 다루지 않았던 영혼에 드 리워진 다양한 인간 정서를 탐구할 수 있었다. 그런 까닭에 포 문학에 나타난 낭만성과 환 상성은 기교가 아니라 새로운 정신의 해방이라 할 수 있다. 한국에서 포 문학은 1920년대부터 번역되었다. 포의 문학은 신문, 저널 등을 통해 그의 시와 소설이 번역되었고, 작품과 작가에 대한 평문들이 쏟아지기 시작했다. 포 문학의 수 용은 한국 근대 문학이 근대성을 확립해 나가는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 시와 소설이 동시에

        Poe the Feminist?: The Return of the Rejected in Poe`s Dying Woman Stories

        In "The Philosophy of Composition," Poe makes a notorious claim that is central to his artistic creation: "the death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world" This aesthetic principle clearly accounts for why Poe`s young, attractive heroines have little chance of survival in his fictional world. The female characters often die of unknown fatal diseases or experience horrible deaths mutilation, poisoning, strangulation, decapitation, suffocatinmg and premature burial. It is thus not surprising that during the past three decades Poe`s portrayal of women in such tales as "Berenice," "Morella," "Ligeia," "The Fall of the House of Usher," and the Dupin tales has haunted feminist literary critics. Despite the dominant feminist view of Poe as the horrible Gothic victimizer, recent revisionist critics claim that his seemingly negative attitude toward women needs a more careful reconsideration and should not be simply dismissed as misogynist. In this paper, I intend to use the emerging revisionist insights in my Lacanian-infonned reading of Poe`s dying woman stones. I Will recontextualize the unsettling and subversive resurgence of the dead or dying woman in Poe`s "The Fall of the House of Usher," "Morella," "Ligeia," and "The Oval Portrait." in the light of the traumatic return of the Lacanian Real Whether he was the true vanguard of male feminists will long remain a matter of dispute among cCritics, but there can be no question that it is time to revaluate the "Real" Poe, more than a tormented, misogynistic nineteenth-century American writer.

        POE를 적용한 논술형 탐구학습 프로그램 활용 수업이 고등학생들의 학업 성취도와 과학 관련 태도에 미치는 효과

        본 연구는 고등학교 생물 수업에서 POE를 적용한 논술형 탐구학습 프로그램의 개발 및 수업에의 적용으로 학생들의 학업 성취도와 과학 관련 태도에 미치는 효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 대상으로 부산시 소재의 남자 인문계고등학교 2학년 4개 반을 선정하였다. 수업은 생물 I ‘순환’ 단원으로 4주에 걸쳐 6차시로 이루어졌으며, 실험집단은 POE를 적용한 논술형 탐구학습 프로그램에 의거한 수업을 진행 하였으며, 통제집단은 실험집단과 동일한 학습 목표와 주요학습 내용을 기준으로 생물 I 교과서에 제시되어 있는 학습내용과 탐구활동을 토대로 실시하였다. 현장 적용결과, 첫째, POE를 적용한 논술형 탐구학습 프로그램은 이미 알고 있는 지식과 실험을 통해 새롭게 알게 된 지식을 적절하게 연결하는 활동과 학생들의 고차원적인 사고유발을 위한 교사의 다양한 질문을 통해 문제해결력 향상뿐만 아니라 논리적인 사고능력에 도움을 주어 학업 성취도에 긍정적인 효과를 미친 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, POE를 적용한 논술형 탐구학습 프로그램은 실험에 대한 사전 예측활동으로 실험에 대한 관심을 유발하게 하고 직접 관찰한 것과 예측한 것 사이의 모순을 해결해 가는 과정을 통해 학습과정에 적극적인 참여의 유도로 과학 관련 태도에 긍정적인 효과가 나타난 것으로 판단된다. The research is aimed at investigating the development and application of high school biology classes utilizing discourse-typed inquiry learning program fitted with POE, and the corresponding effect on student's academic achievement and attitude toward science. 4 classes of 11th graders in a general high school located in Busan were selected as subjects. Biology I, ‘Circulation’ unit was lectured for 4 weeks (6 classes), and the experimental group underwent classes utilizing discourse-typed inquiry learning program fitted with POE. The control group was taught identical major learning contents, but based on the learning objectives and research activities provided by Biology I textbook. As a result of application, first, the discourse-typed inquiry learning program fitted with POE exhibited positive consequences of linking previously acquired knowledge and the new learning attained through experiments, as well as not only improving the students' problem solving capacity through diverging questions from the teachers to drive the students' higher-level contemplation, but also enhancing student academic achievement by assisting their logical thinking. Second, POE-fitted discourse-typed inquiry learning program rendered presupposing session of the experiment that resulted in drawing learners' attention m advance, and incited active participation in the learning process through solving the contradiction between what was actually observed and what was expected, which eventually proved to lay out positive impact on students' attitude toward science.

        Humour and Satire as a Social Criticism in Edgar Allan Poe’s Short Stories

        This paper aims to analyze Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories in order to explore the realities of American social life in the first half of the 19th century from the perspective of humour and satire, and finally, to criticize of social realities through those literary techniques. Humour is analyzed on the basis of the features of horror, comedy, and deception. And satire is discussed on two levels: literary satire and political one. This paper also focuses on the analysis of the internal connections and progressive levels of the three elements of humour, satire, and social criticism. Poe’s humour is not just mechanical hilarity and jokes, it is connected with the common feature of Poe’s short stories. Poe combines comical and horrifying features to produce a comical effect in his works, and finally achieves the purpose of satirizing and criticizing society. By narrating a series of highly authentic deceit stories, Poe expresses his criticism of the fake, evil and ugly phenomena in society. Poe attacked the arrogance, hypocrisy, and utilitarianism of the literary world in which his value was not recognized correctly. Poe's humour and satire arc ultimately in order to achieve the effect of social criticism. In Poe’s short stories, humour and satire are not just for comic and cynical effect. The essay posits that Poe’s humour and satire are closely related to social criticism.

        한미 현대 연작시 비교 연구 -에드거 앨런 포의 「까마귀」와 구상의 「까마귀」를 대상으로

        This study compared and studied “The Raven” representing the United States and Korea. Edgar Allan Poe's “The Raven” and Gu Sang’s “The Raven” were considered in symbolic appropriation of poetic material, in series form, intertextuality and semantic horizons. First, in the case of Poe, the choice of poetic material was ‘raven’ as a poetic material. This was intended to achieve the highest artistic effect. It also tried to best represent beauty. And the chorus "nevermore" was intended to maximize the poetic effect. On the other hand, Gu Sang chose the target of shock, impact, tension and emotion. The subject selected the raven as an allegory to criticize and inform the situation of the times. Edgar Allan Poe symbolizes fear and fear, based on the image of an ancient sinister bird. And the raven symbolizes the person who rules and delivers the dark world in the Age of Chaos. Also, the appearance of a raven is symbolized by ‘nevermore’ as ‘mournful, never-ending recollection’. On the other hand, Gu Sang's “Raven” criticizes the times of materialism and technologyism. In Korea, the raven is an ominous bird. However, the raven is symbolized as a bird longing for a spiritual and pure soul. And it is symbolized as a bird that foretells injustice and calamity. It is also symbolized as a savior who can save humans from golden universalism and materialism. Second, it is a series form. Poe transformed the sestina form of 6 lines and 6 stanzas into a finite series of 18 stanzas and 108 lines. On the other hand, Gu Sang has no external boundaries or external boundaries. He made it into an infinite series where only the theme changes. And Poe reinforces the negative expression with ‘nothing more’ (limited negation) < ‘nevermore’ (future negation) against the backdrop of the night. On the other hand, Gu Sang's poems are titled with numbers. The number does not impose a continuous development and process. It is united by the same rhetorical pattern(allegory), the same rhythm, and the same repetition. Finally, in Poe's poem, he dreams of becoming one with his lost lover. However, he feels death, fear and loss from the raven who repeats only 'nevermore'. And the story and intertextuality of Greco-Roman mythology appear. Poe made a series of symbols and series of perpetually recurring sadness of loss. On the other hand, in the poems of Gu Sang, it is symbolized as a bird giving warnings and prophecies through cries. And the legend of the Tower of London in England is intertextual and denounces human cruelty and savagery. Gu Sang delivers the message of harmony between humans and nature, restoration of humanity, and saving lives. As described above, the poems of Poe and Gu Sang are different in symbol and form. However, the sadness, mourning, and anxiety of the loss of an object are common.

        19세기 후반 스페인 환상문학

        장르로서의 환상문학은 18세기 후반 낭만주의의 일환으로 태동했다. 그러나 초기의 환상문학은 흡혈귀나 사탄, 유령과 같은 중세적 전통에서 크게 벗어나지 못했으며 고성이나 오지, 수도원 등 중세적 풍광을 배경으로 삼는 경우가 많았다. 환상문학의 배경을 일상공간으로 전이시켰을 뿐만 아니라 초자연적인 현상을 평범한 인물들의 내면에 잠재된 광기 혹은 징조나 불가해한 우연적 요소 등을 통해 ‘비가시적’으로 암시함으로써 이 문학의 ‘현실성의 효과(efecto de realidad)’를 높인 인물이 바로 에드거 앨런 포우이다. 포우의 잠재적 가치를 일찍이 알아본 사람은 보들레르와 말라르메 등 프랑스 상징주의자들이었다. 특히 보들레르는 약 20년간 포우의 많은 작품을 프랑스어로 번역했다. 프랑스에서의 대중적인 성공은 스페인에도 큰 여파를 미쳤다. 당시 피레네를 넘은 포우의 스타일은 스페인의 비평가들과 작가들, 독자들에게 진정으로 새로운 것으로 받아들여졌으며 포우의 영향은 19세기 후반기 대다수의 스페인 환상문학 작품에 반영되었고, 일부 작가들에게는 그 흔적이 매우 뚜렷했다. 본고에서는 이러한 배경 하에 19세기 후반기 스페인 환상문학의 특징을 분석하고자 한다. 즉, 낭만주의가 쇠락하고 실증적 세계관에 입각한 사실주의와 자연주의가 융기하던 시대에 스페인 환상문학이 빠르게 성장한 배경을 일별하고 특히 이 시기 스페인 작가들에게 미친 포우의 영향을 비센떼 바란떼스(Vicente Barrantes)의 「검은고양이. 에드거 포우를 모방한 환상 El gato negro. Fantasía imitada de Edgar Poe」에 나타난 사례를 통해 분석할 것이다. The fantastic literature, as a genre and as part of Romanticism, had its earliest beginning in the late 18th century. The early fantastic literature, however, had not escaped much from medieval traditions, such as vampires, Satan and ghosts, and often used medieval scenes, such as castles, wilds, monasteries, etc. In addition to not only transforming the background of the fantastic literature into everyday life and space, but also by supposing that the supernatural phenomenon is "invisible" through latent madness or incomprehensible and casual elements in the ordinary characters, Edgar Allan Poe enhanced the ‘reality effect(efecto de realidad )’ of this literary genre. The early figures who realized the Poe’s potential value were French symbolists such as Charles Baudelaire and Stèphane Mallarmé. In particular, Baudelaire translated into French many Poe’s works for 20 years. Its popular success in France had a great impact on Spain as well. Poe’s style was accepted as truly new by Spanish critics, writers and readers. Likewise, the Poe’s influence was reflected in the majority of Spanish fantastic literature in the late 19th century and, for some writers, the traces were very clear. Under this background, this paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of Spanish fantastic literature in the latter half of the 19th century. In addition, it aims to explore the background of the rapid development of Spanish fantastic literature at that time. Particularly, Poe’s influence on Vicente Barrantes’s "El gato negro. Fantasía imitada de Edgar Poe“ shall be analyzed throughout this research.

        The Cultural Construction of Poe’s Insane Narrator in the Murder Narratives

        Poe’s tales have long been viewed as informed by his obsession with the perverse, the excessive, and the grotesque in human nature. Some earlier critics such as Marie Bonaparte, D. H. Lawrence, and Daniel Hoffman have read Poe’s tragic biography and uncanny writings as expressions of diverse Freudian paradigms, and have speculated that his interest in madness originated primarily from his own neurotic mental problems. Recently, Poe scholars have concentrated on the project of placing him back within the specific American contexts, claiming that to decode Poe outside the antebellum cultural milieu is seriously to misread him. In line with the recent socio-historical trend in Poe criticism, I intend to explore Poe’s insane narrators in “Berenice,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Black Cat,” in terms of Halttunen’s concept of ‘moral alien,’ which is far removed from the ‘wild beast’ of the eighteenth-century insanity narratives. I will also demonstrate that Poe’s homicidal monomaniacs are deliberately constructed in accordance with the dominant moral-alien discourse in the early nineteenth century.

        Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” in Blackwood’s Tradition

        In his roles as magazine editor and book reviewer, Poe was acutely aware of the Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine. Founded in 1817, Blackwood’s supplied some of the age’s most innovative writing and became a significant vehicle for the circulation of short prose fiction in the early nineteenth century. Blackwood’s also contributed to promoting a popular type of the Gothic known as the Tale of Sensation, in which a victim minutely describes his physical sensations while trapped in some excruciating predicament. As a commercial writer keenly conscious of the dominant trend of the period, Poe eagerly imitated, parodied, and reworked popular Blackwood’s tales throughout his career. Poe’s terror tales were clearly designed to cater to an American public increasingly hungry for horror and sensation. In this study I intend to examine Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” in relation to the Blackwood’s context. Poe brilliantly combined and reframed several distinctive Blackwood’s elements to create a complex psychological terror tale. Poe’s maneuver of his narrative subjects has a different, more intensive quality than Blackwood’s. Although he draws upon popular Blackwood’s themes with minute accounts of sensational experiences, Poe surpasses the machinery of Blackwood’s in its exploration of the psychology of fear.

        Poe, Journalism, and the Birth of Detective Fiction

        The Poe scholarship has long been dominated by either Gothic or psychoanalytic criticism. Since the late 1980s, however, renewed critical efforts have begun to place Poe’s work in antebellum contexts. Indeed, this contextualization of Poe has been insightful and productive. In line with the recent historical trends in Poe criticism, I intend to explore Poe’s first two tales of ratiocination, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Mystery of Marie Roget,” in the light of his professional reactions to the rapidly growing Penny Press journalism. In so doing, I will demonstrate that Poe’s creation of the new literary genre in 1840s was closely tied to the revolutionary rise of the Penny Press. This historical reading will provide a more balanced understanding on the birth of Poe’s tales of ratiocination.
