Vol.32 No.1

In recent years, recurring epidemics and the emergence of new aquatic diseases are increasingly threatening the growth of aquaculture. In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO), in consultation and collaboration with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has identified best practices for the naming of new human diseases; a disease name should consist of a generic descriptive term based on the symptoms that the disease causes and more specific descriptive terms when robust information is available on how the disease manifests, who it affects, its severity or seasonality. However, there has been no practical application for how to name aquatic animal diseases and classify them using a numeric code comparable to the human diseases. We have analyzed the cases where the names of aquatic animal diseases are used in the research papers and textbooks published in Korea. Based on the domestic and international cases of naming and classification of diseases, we have proposed a new guideline for the naming of aquatic animal diseases in Korea. First, disease names which are called by several words must have a unified name; ‘Vibrio disease’ or ‘Vibrio syndrome’ should be renamed to ‘Infection with Vibrio spp.’. Second, names should be as consistent as possible with guidance from the domestic and international principles such as loanword orthography or the Nomenclature Regulations of international classification of diseases (ICD). Third, if the causative pathogen is known, it should be used as part of the disease name. Finally, the official standard reflecting the characteristics of Korean situations in naming of the diseases should be identified by expert groups, committees or competent national authorities. NAME GIVING RITE IN THE EPOS "KITABI-DEDE KORKUD"

Vol.- No.50

The main purpose of the initiation ceremonies held in the transition period is to enable the individual to move from one social status to another. Every young person named in the ancient Turkic society was not only a full-fledged member of the society but also had to live by his name. Name in Turkic ethnic culture is not only an age category, it also changes depending on the social status, i.e. its position in the structure of society, power. The shaman who has the gift, after the initiation ceremony, gets a name and becomes a shaman, and this coincides with the new status of the hero in the epos. Name giving ceremony reflecting the ceremony of the young warrior is presented by cutting off the head and shedding blood in the epos “Kitabi-Dede Korkut”. In the Oghuz society, the Oghuz hero got his name only by beheading and shedding blood and could take place in the power structure. Name giving ceremony occurs in the I, III and VIII chapters of the epos" Kitabi-Dede Korkut". In the epos, the mission of name giving isсarried out by Dede Korkut who is connected with the world of spirits. Dede Korkut demands the title of bek for the young man to whom he gives a name, and this shows that such naming is associated with the transition to the social class of beks. It is clear from the epos “Kitabi-Dede Korkut” that Oghuz warriors got their real names at the cost of their blood and by knowing the person's name it is possible to express an opinion about his identity. The heroes that were named and praised by Dede Korkut connected with the divine world in three chapters of the epos differ from the other heroes by their miraculous, unusual birth. The motif of name giving reflecting inclusion of the Oghuz fellow in society of men is a magical blessing given to the hero in the epos "Kitabi-Dede Korkut".

      • HOW TO NAME A PRODUCT? NAMING STRATEGIES FOR MOVIES

2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.7

Product naming is one of the most important communication decisions for any firm to deliver product information to consumers. Product names are highly likely to have critical impacts on the market performances of products, in particular, consisting of unobservable attributes such as motion pictures, music, books, and games. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of product naming strategies on their market performances and provide managerial implications on how to name products, especially for experience goods such as movies. We, firstly, suggest a conceptual framework to describe naming decisions as two-stage strategic decisions. The first stage decision is about what type of product information should be provided to consumers via a product name, which we call information choice strategy, and the second stage decision is about how to express the product information in the name, which we call expression strategy. We develop a two-level hierarchical Bayesian log-linear model to consider the main effects of product information strategy with the 1st level of the model, and the mediate effects of expression strategies with the 2nd level of the model. We applied the model to a data set consisting of viewership, names, and release dates of 634 movies released in eight countries where English is an official language. We have decided the types of naming strategies with the help of three industry practitioners, who have been working in the film industry for over 10 years as a producer, marketer, and investor, respectively. The country characteristics, obtained from Hofsted's Homepage (National culture scores of each country) and the World Bank (GDP and population of each country at the released t year), were considered for country heterogeneity. The empirical results show that information choice for movie titles have significant impacts on the movie viewership. Especially, movie titles including story or negative words have more positive impact on their market performances. One of the important findings is that the effects of “what to choose” depends on “how to express”. For example, not frequently used words, nonwords, proper nouns, foreign words in movie titles have positive impacts on the viewership. Popular words used for movie titles have a positive influence directly on the viewership. Interestingly, while sentences for movie titles have negative impacts on the viewership, storyline and theme expressed in sentences show positive impacts on the viewership. Another important finding is the mediating effects of country and product heterogeneities. The effects of naming strategy differs across movie genres and country characteristics. This study makes at least three contributions to the literature. Firstly, this study suggest a conceptual framework an empirical model for naming strategies in the literature. Secondly, this study provides information on what type of naming strategies are more effective on market performance, which has never been addressed in the literature. Lastly, the study provides some managerial implications which are useful for researchers and industry practitioners who are interested in product naming.

Vol.25 No.1

Naming comes from the desire of those who want to live a happy life, and it reflects the society's culture. This study sought to examine how Thai naming changed according to periods, and to determine how the naming reflected the social and cultural characteristics of each of those periods. From the morphological aspect of Thai naming, the periods of Sukhothai Kingdom and Ayutthaya Kingdom saw mainly 2-syllable naming including the mono syllable, and the Rattanakosin Kingdom period saw 3-4-syllable naming and 4-5-syllable naming. In terms of language, pure Thai was used in the early stage, and in modern society, a growing number of names used Pali and Sanskrit, and a growing of nicknames used English and foreign languages. Meanwhile, Muslims mostly used Arabic and Malay in their naming. From the semantic aspect, the early-time stage saw naming using material nouns and simple motions or animal and plant names. Later, a growing number of names used abstract nouns, and many names were created using the desires of the times. Male names used words meaning knowledge, ability, greatness, victory and the like. Many female names used words meaning flowers, plants, beauty, love and happiness.

Vol.8 No.1

This study analyzes the impact of short-term market reactions through corporate name change strategies on corporate financial stability from 2000 to 2019, focusing on the IT industry listed on the Korea KOSDAQ Market. In addition, it is analyzed whether delisting is possible before the name change and whether there is a difference in financial stability after the name change according to each market reaction. In addition, it is divided into before and after the disclosure of the name change, and additionally analyzed whether there is a difference in their relationship. The results of this study are as follows. First, there is a positive (+) relationship between the market response to the name change and the financial stability of IT companies. Second, listed companies have relatively good financial stability after changing their name. Third, if the market response is good due to the name change, financial stability after the name change is good not only for companies that remain listed but also for companies that are in danger of being delisted. Fourth, the relationship between the market response before and after the announcement of the name change and the financial stability is found to be statistically significant in relation to the financial stability after the market response after the announcement of the name change. In addition, the better the market response to the disclosure of the name change, the more positively it affects the future financial stability. Finally, it appears that there is a difference in the impact on financial stability depending on whether the company remains listed and whether it is before or after the announcement of the company name change. There is a statistically significant relationship in the relationship between , and in the case of a company in danger of delisting, the market reaction before the name change has a statistically significant relationship in the relationship with financial stability thereafter.

Vol.- No.58

Names exist in the form of language that symbolizes a person's social identity. As an objective linguistic phenomenon, names are also indispensable communication tools in everyday life. The uniqueness of names allows us to distinguish one from another in social interactions. A person's name typically consists of two parts: last name and first name. As the last name is somewhat stable and inheritable, while the first name is easily affected by external factors. As the first name is arbitrary and changeable compared to the last name, this paper focuses on "first name" rather than "last name." There is also little research on the characters used in modern names over time. Therefore, the names of students in their post-00s or older and those in their post-10s living in the old town of Changchun were selected as the subjects of this paper's research, and the situation and characteristics of the characters used in the names of the times were analyzed. From the perspective of sociolinguistics, the factors influencing the characters used in contemporary names of the post-00s and post-10s students in Jiutai District of Changchun city can be obtained.

Vol.22 No.1

This paper is concerned with a comparative analysis of the naming taboo of Kihwee(忌諱) and the so-called name-friendly attitude of Chinhwee(親諱), the willing adoption of one's ancestor's name. The goals of this study are to investigate the origin, the evolution, the objects and methods of the naming taboo, and to compare it with the naming practice of Chinhwee which seems presumably opposed to it in terms of showing how each one of them is realized in the agricultural society based on Confucianism and in the nomadic culture sphere, respectively. A naming taboo is a socio-cultural taboo against speaking or writing the given names of exalted persons in Confucian countries including Korea and China. There are several kinds of naming taboo: the naming taboo of the state (國諱); the naming taboo of the clan (家諱); the naming taboo of the holinesses (聖人諱). People tend to figure out plausible reasons and methods not to violate a naming taboo. There existed at least three ways to avoid using a taboo character: changing the character to another one which usually is a synonym or sounds like the character being avoided; leaving the character as a blank; omitting a stroke in the character, especially the final stroke. The problem is that the custom of naming taboo had a contradiction in itself: without knowing what the emperors' names were one could hardly be expected to a void them, so somehow the emperors' names had to be informally transmitted to the populace to allow them to learn them in order to avoid them. Since every reign of every dynasty had its own naming taboos, the study of naming taboos can help date an ancient text, and understand the culture concerned.

Vol.- No.28

The East Sea, a body of water between Korea and Japan, is now widely called ‘Sea of Japan’ in foreign countries. The name ‘Sea of Japan’ was given to this body of water to replace its original name ‘East Sea" when Korea lost its sovereignty to Japanese colonial rule. Restoring the original name ‘East Sea’ to the currently known ‘Sea of Japan’ became an international issue when Korea officially announced its historical claim to the area at the UN conference in 1992. Misrepresentation of the name over the water body is found more widespread online which reflect offline information. This study was prompted by the understanding that correct and fair naming of the East Sea online is a matter of supreme urgency. To understand the current online naming situation of the ‘East Sea’, this study reviewed 100 websites of various countries around the world, and the mass media and map makers. In addition, ‘the 20 websites for special supervision’ selected in 2007 by the report of the Northeast Asian History Foundation, who is focused on renaming the Sea of Japan to East Sea, were also closely examined. Then, the websites were categorized according to their use of the name of East Sea or Sea of Japan. The categorizes are: ‘East Sea only / Sea of Japan only’, ‘Double equal name: East Sea / Sea of Japan’, ‘Double equal name: Sea of Japan / East Sea’, ‘Mixed usage’, ‘Blank/no marking)’ and ‘others’. The efforts of the associations or organizations were also categorized into ‘governmental’ ‘academic’, and ‘private’. The results of this study are as follows: First, according to 100 websites, the majority used ‘Sea of Japan only’. The use of ‘mixed usage" was the second majority. Secondly, two of ‘the 20 websites for special supervision’ have recently changed their naming of Sea of Japan to East Sea. For example, Wikipedia changed to ‘blank(no marking)’, and Welt Atlas to ‘Double equal name: East Sea / Sea of Japan’, which means they are aware of the naming issue of East. Sea.

Vol.65 No.-

Names are not just mere individual titles and signs but also linguistic symbols with sorcery power to Koreans who believe in the magical power of words, saying the word becomes the seed. In modern Korean society, there is the coexistence of Hangul with phonetic symbols to spell sound and Chinese characters with pictorial symbols to mimic shapes. The custom of naming a child with the sounds of Hangul and the strokes of Chinese characters has been a trend. Names are the means to actively pray for wealth and prosperity, outstanding achievements, and longevity with no illness in the world for the sake of the child as they distinguish the sounds and strokes of a name into Yin and Yang and Five Elements and then pursue mutual survival among Yin and Yang, Five Elements and neutralization, harmony with the child`s innate the Four Pillars and the Eight Characters, and good fortune of Sang and Su in the name. From the perspective of shamanic fortune belief in Korean society, the naming process involves confirming that the neutralization of Yin and Yang and Five Elements is the essence of good and bad fortune and implementing the neutralization and mutual survival of Yin and Yang and Five Elements through the sounds, strokes, Su and Sang of the name. Even though the basic name process is common, there are many different opinions about its specific approaches. The reality of naming practice is that the sane name is subject to different judgments of good and bad fortune, which has worked to multiply distrust in the naming practice. The general characteristics of names in Korean society include individuality, overlapping, and systemicity. In addition to them, the study categorized the characteristics of names into five types from the perspective of shamanic fortune belief: ① sorcery that is similar to paradox; ② emphasis on the neutralization and mutual survival of Yin and Yang and Five Elements; ③ emphasis on the Gilsu of Sangsuyeokhak; ④ uniqueness and destiny; and ⑤ emphasis on this world and secularity. The biggest characteristic of naming practice in Korean society is that a good name is not one that is easy to call, write, and hear from the perspective of shamanic fortune belief, being composed of only Gilsu, but one that is in a mutually understanding and harmonious relationship with the person`s Four Pillars and the Eight Characters containing the Pumgi of his or her innate Yin and Yang and Five Elements.
