Normal and Abnormal Fertilisation of Zebu Cattle Oocytes In Vitro

        Anup Kumar Talukder,Mohammed Shamsuddin,Mohammad Bozlur Rahman,Farida Yeasmin Bari,John J parish 사단법인 한국동물생명공학회 2009 한국동물생명공학회지 Vol.24 No.2

Successful in vitro embryo production heavily relies on the normal maturation and fertilisation of oocytes. We examined the normal and abnormal fertilisation of zebu cattle oocytes matured in vitro. Immature cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) from zebu cattle ovaries at slaughter were matured in vitro (IVM) for 24 h. The oocytes were either fixed, stained and examined for nuclear changes or fertilised in vitro (IVF) with Percoll-separated, heparintreated spermatozoa (1.0 × 106/mL) of zebu (n = 7) and crossbred bulls (n = 7). After 18 h of sperm-COCs co-incubation at 39℃ with 5% CO2 in humidified air, the presumptive zygotes were fixed, stained and examined for pronuclei. The number of oocytes retrieved per ovary was 5.4 ± 0.7. The percentage of matured oocytes was 73.0. The difference in motility of spermatozoa before and after Percoll seperation was significant (p<0.001). The percentages of normal and abnormal fertilisation (polyspermia and oocytes with one pronucleus) varied significantly depending on individual bulls (p<0.05). A protocol for IVF of IVM oocytes in Bangladeshi zebu cattle is developed. A future study may elucidate the capacity of such IVM-IVF oocytes to develop to the blastocyst stage for transfer to surrogate mother.

Acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to increase the success rate of in vitro fertilisation: an overview of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

        Jeong, Daun,Hyun, Min-Kyoung,Jeong, Jae-Cheol,Park, Jang-Kyung,Choi, Min-Sun,Kim, Dong-Il,Lee, Dong-Nyung The Society of Korean Medicine 2014 대한한의학회지 Vol.35 No.2

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to increase the success rate of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Methods: A review of the English and Korean literature was conducted to identify studies on acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to IVF. The main outcome measures were the biochemical pregnancy rate (BPR), the implantation rate (IR), the clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), the miscarriage rate (MR), the on-going pregnancy rate (OPR) and the live birth rate (LBR). Results: Nine meta-analyses of 11 systematic reviews (SRs) were included in this review. In four SRs, the overall IVF outcomes regardless of the procedural steps were documented; two of these SRs reported a significant effect on the CPR. One SR reported that acupuncture at the time of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation had a significant effect on the BPR. Seven SRs reported that acupuncture had no significant impact on transvaginal oocyte retrieval (TVOR). In eight SRs, significant impacts on the CPR, LIBR and OPR were reported when acupuncture was performed around the time of embryo transfer (ET). The results of repeated acupuncture after ET were included in two SRs, which included the same primary studies. The results of the SRs showed that acupuncture had a positive effect on the CPR. Conclusions: When the complete IVF procedure is analysed, there is conflicting evidence in that some reviews have found that acupuncture leads to an increased CPR but others have not. In addition, the reviews presented no evidence to suggest that acupuncture has any specific risks.

Psychological impact of suspension/postponement of fertility treatments on infertile women waiting during COVID pandemic

        Parul Jaiswal,Reeta Mahey,Shalini Singh,Perumal Vanamail,Monica Gupta,Rohitha Cheluvaraju,J B Sharma,Neerja Bhatla 대한산부인과학회 2022 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.65 No.2

ObjectiveTo assess the psychological impact of suspension/postponement of various fertility treatments on infertile womenduring the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted as an online survey among infertile women consulting either throughteleconsultation or physical consultation at a fertility clinic of a tertiary care referral unit. A validated questionnairewas given as a WhatsApp link to the women who were consulting for the resumption of services. Questions askedwere based on their socio-demographic parameters, fertility treatment at the time of suspension, anxiety (selfreported)and stress (perceived stress scale-4, PSS-4) due to delay in treatment, psychosocial effect of pandemic, andwishes regarding the resumption of fertility services. ResultsOf 430 patients who received the questionnaire, 250 completed the survey (response rate: 58%). The mean ageof participants was 29.26±4.18 years and the majority (70.4%) had lower socioeconomic status. The average PSS-4score was 7.8±0.71, and the prevalence of self-reported anxiety was 72%. Those who suffered migration during thepandemic had significantly higher PSS-4 scores, and increasing age was associated with increased self-reported anxietydue to the suspension of fertility services. The top three priorities reported were infertility and treatment delay (48.4%),job loss (19.2%), and the risk of contracting COVID-19 infection (16%). The degree of spousal support was significantlycorrelated with lower PSS-4 scores (r=-0.30, P<0.01). On multivariate logistic analysis, duration of infertility, delayin treatment due to suspension of services, and fear of COVID-19 infection were significant predictors of stress andanxiety. ConclusionThis study emphasizes the need to investigate psychosocial health and to provide psychological support to thisvulnerable population in addition to triaging fertility treatments in a phased manner.
