        Automatic Contrast Enhancement by Transfer Function Modification

        In this study, we propose an automatic contrast enhancement method based on transfer function modification (TFM) by histogram equalization. Previous histogram-based global contrast enhancement techniques employ histogram modification, whereas we propose a direct TFM technique that considers the mean brightness of an image during contrast enhancement. The mean point shifting method using a transfer function is proposed to preserve the mean brightness of an image. In addition, the linearization of transfer function technique, which has a histogram flattening effect, is designed to reduce visual artifacts. An attenuation factor is automatically determined using the maximum value of the probability density function in an image to control its rate of contrast. A new quantitative measurement method called sparsity of a histogram is proposed to obtain a better objective comparison relative to previous global contrast enhancement methods. According to our experimental results, we demonstrated the performance of our proposed method based on generalized measures and the newly proposed measurement.

        히스토그램 변형을 이용한 HDR 영상 렌더링을 위한 인지기반 톤 맵핑 기법

        본 논문에서는 HDR (high dynamic range) 영상 렌더링을 위한 히스토그램 변형 기법을 이용한 인지기반 톤 맵핑(tone mapping) 기법을 제안한다. HDR 톤 맵핑 알고리듬은 넓은 동적 영역을 갖는 영상을 LDR (low dynamic range) 영상 장치에 표현하기 위해 사용된다. 인간의 시각특성을 이용한 톤 맵핑 알고리듬은 상당히 효과적이지만 고정된 형태의 맵핑 함수를 사용하기 때문에 모든 영상에서 동일한 성능을 얻지 못한다. 제안하는 방법은 인지기반 톤 맵핑 함수와 히스토그램 변형기법을 적용하여 HDR 영상의 동적 영역을 압축한다. 인지기반 톤 맵핑 함수를 이용해서 원 영상히스토그램을 제한하고 보상과정을 통해서 적응적인 톤 맵핑 함수를 얻을 수 있다. 이는 화소값에 따라 서로 다른 제약 조건들을 사용함으로써 contrast를 향상시킬 뿐만 아니라 원 영상의 디테일도 보존한다. 또한, 히스토그램 변형기법을 사용함으로써 과도한 히스토그램 평활화로 인한 왜곡을 개선할 수 있고, 더욱이 제어파라미터를 이용하여 영상의 contrast를 조정할 수 있다. 시뮬레이션 및 실험을 통해 주관적 및 객관적 성능을 비교하고 기존 방법에 비해 제안한 방법이 우수함을 입증한다. In this paper, we present a perception-based tone mapping technique using histogram modification for displaying high dynamic range image. HDR (high dynamic range) tone mapping algorithms are used to display HDR image on LDR (low dynamic rnage) devices. Although perception-based tone mapping methods provides better performance, it dose not always produce good results for a wide variety of images. The proposed method reduces dynamic range by using the perception-based tone mapping function and histogram modification. A derivative of perception-based tone mapping function is used as constraint function of histogram and additional compensation process is performed. This method not only improves contrast by adopting different constraints on each pixel value, but also preserves more visual details. In order to prevent over enhancement, histogram modification technique is applied. Furthermore, it can control the rate of image contrast using control parameters. Subjective and objective evaluations show that proposed algorithm is better than existing algorithms.

        영상의 대비 개선을 위한 추가 항과 감마 보정에 기반한 히스토그램 변형 기법

        Contrast enhancement plays an important role in various computer vision systems, since their usability can be improved with visibility enhancement of the images affected by weather and lighting conditions. This paper introduces a histogram modification algorithm that reflects the properties of original images in order to eliminate the saturation effect and washed-out of image details due to the over-enhancement. Our method modifies the original histogram so that an additive term fill histogram pits and the gamma correction suppresses histogram spikes. The parameters for the additive term and gamma correction are adjusted automatically according to statistical properties of the images. Experimental results for various low contrast and hazy images demonstrate that the proposed contrast enhancement improves visibility and reduces haze components effectively, while preserving the characteristics of original images, than the conventional methods. 기상 환경 및 조명의 영향을 받는 영상의 가시성을 향상시켜 다양한 컴퓨터 비전 시스템의 활용성을 높이기 위해 대비(contrast)를 개선하는 것은 매우 중요한 과정이다. 본 논문에서는 영상의 특성에 따라 히스토그램을 변형하고, 변형된 히스토그램에 균등화를 적용함으로써 과도한 밝기 변화로 인한 포화현상 및 영상 디테일이 손실되는 문제를 해결한다. 영상의 왜곡을 발생시키는 주된 원인인 히스토그램 피트(pit)는 추가 항(additive term)을 통해 감소시키고, 스파이크(spike)는 감마 보정 기법을 적용하여 히스토그램을 변형한다. 추가 항과 감마 보정을 적용할 때 파라미터는 영상의 통계적 특성에 따라 설정되도록 한다. 대비가 낮고 안개성분이 포함된 다양한 영상에 대해 수행한 실험 결과는 제안하는 기법이 기존의 방법에 비해 원 영상의 특성을 보존하면서 효과적인 대비 개선 및 안개 제거 성능을 나타내어 영상의 가시성을 향상시킴을 보인다.

        Weight based Histogram Modification for Contrast Enhancement

        본 논문에서는 효율적인 명암도 향상 알고리즘으로 가중치 히스토그램 수정을 제안한다. 명암도 향상을 위하여 히스토그램 평활화와 히스토그램 스트레칭은 효과적인 방법들이다. 하지만, 히스토그램 평활화와 히스토그램 스트레칭은 지나친 명암도 향상을 가져올 수 있다. 가중치 히스토그램 수정을 이용하는 제안하는 방법은 부작용 없이 기존 명함도 향상하는 방법들 보다 자연스럽고 향상된 결과를 가진다. In this paper, an efficient contrast enhancement algorithm using weighted histogram modification is proposed. For contrast enhancement, histogram equalization (HE) and histogram stretching (HS) are effective techniques. However, HE and HS may have excessive contrast enhancement. Proposed method using weighted histogram modification produces better natural and enhanced results than those of conventional contrast enhancement methods without artifacts.

        적외선 영상의 동적 범위 압축을 위한 적응적 지역 히스토그램 변형 기법

        In this paper, we propose an effective dynamic range compression (DRC) method of infrared images. A histogram of infrared images has narrow dynamic range compared to visible images. Hence, it is important to apply the effective DRC algorithm for high performance of an infrared image analysis. The proposed algorithm for high dynamic range divides an infrared image into the overlapped blocks and calculates Shannon’s entropy of overlapped blocks. After that, we classify each block according to the value of entropy and apply adaptive histogram modification method each overlapped block. We make an intensity mapping function through result of the adaptive histogram modification method which is using standard-deviation and maximum value of histogram of classified blocks. Lastly, in order to reduce block artifact, we apply hanning window to the overlapped blocks. In experimental result, the proposed method showed better performance of dynamic range compression compared to previous algorithms.

        Underwater image quality enhancement through Rayleigh-stretching and averaging image planes

        Visibility in underwater images is usually poor because of the attenuation of light in the water thatcauses low contrast and color variation. In this paper, a new approach for underwater image quality improvement ispresented. The proposed method aims to improve underwater image contrast, increase image details, and reduce noiseby applying a new method of using contrast stretching to produce two different images with different contrasts. Theproposed method integrates the modification of the image histogram in two main color models, RGB and HSV. The histogramsof the color channel in the RGB color model are modified and remapped to follow the Rayleigh distributionwithin certain ranges. The image is then converted to the HSV color model, and the S and V components are modifiedwithin a certain limit. Qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate that the proposed method outperforms other stateof-the-art methods in terms of contrast, details, and noise reduction. The image color also shows much improvement.

        차분 영상 히스토그램 수정 기반의 가역 데이터 은닉 기법

        가역 데이터 은닉 기법은 영상에 데이터를 삽입 후, 영상에서 삽입된 데이터를 추출한 후에 원본 영상의 복원이 완벽하게 가능한 기법을 말하며 최근에 많은 관심을 받고 있는 분야이다. 이러한 복원 가능한 데이터 은닉 기법 중 기존의 히스토그램을 이용한 기법들은 히스토그램 수정 때문에 언더플로우와 오버플로우를 발생시킴으로써 데이터가 숨겨진 영상의 화질이 떨어지게 된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기위해 언더플로우와 오버플로우가 발생하는 위치를 표시하는 로케이션 맵정보를 영상에 추가로 삽입하여 해결하는 새로운 가역 데이터 은닉 기법을 제안한다. 또한 삽입되는 데이터의 양을 증가시키기 위해서 멀티 레벨 데이터 은닉 기법을 알고리즘에 적용하였다. 실험결과 제안하는 알고리즘은 PSNR, 데이터 삽입량, 추가적인 데이터의 크기 면에서 우수한 성능을 보였다. Reversible data hiding, which can recover the original image without any distortion after the extraction of the hidden data, has drawn considerable attention in recent years. However, underflow and overflow problems have occurred occasionally in the embedded image. To overcome these problems, we propose a new reversible data hiding algorithm which embeds a compressed location map used to identify these underflow and overflow points. In addition, the proposed algorithm allows for multilevel data hiding to increase the hiding capacity. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm generates good performances in the PSNR, the embedding capacity, and the size of side information.

        Flickering Effect Reduction Based on the Modified Transformation Function for Video Contrast Enhancement

        This paper proposes a method that reduces the flickering effect caused by A-GLG (Adaptive Gray-Level Grouping) during video contrast enhancement. Of the GLG series, A-GLG shows the best contrast enhancement performance. The GLG series is based on histogram grouping. Histogram grouping is calculated differently between the continuous frames with a similar histogram and causes a subtle change in the transformation function. This is the reason for flickering effect when the video contrast is enhanced by A-GLG. To reduce the flickering effect caused by A-GLG, the proposed method calculates a modified transformation function. The modified transformation function is calculated using a previous and current transformation function applied with a weight separately. The proposed method was compared with A-GLG for flickering effect reduction and video contrast enhancement. Through the experimental results, the proposed method showed not only a reduced flickering effect, but also video contrast enhancement.
