The Effects of Natural Exposure on Advanced Korean EFL Learners' English Article Use

This paper investigates the effect of natural exposure to English on advanced Korean learners' article use on the basis of the detailed classification of the English article system. Seventy-two advanced Korean college and graduate students participated in this study. They were divided into two groups depending on whether they have an experience of living in English-speaking countries. All the participants completed a questionnaire and a cloze test. The results showed that natural exposure to English had a great effect on the use of articles in Type 1 to 4 and the use of the definite article the and the indefinite article a. In terms of specific article usages, natural exposure was closely related to the accurate use of articles concerning E5 ([the] Immediate situational use), E6 ([the] Larger situational use), E8 ([the] Associative anaphoric use), E14 ([a] Attributive indefinites) and E15 ([∅1(p)] Attributive indefinites). Based on the results, this study suggests that for situational use of 'the,' associative anaphoric use, and attributive indefinites, providing much natural input and giving opportunities of interaction in English are recommended in the Korean EFL context. Further, in order to improve the general ability of using articles accurately, advanced learners in Korea are encouraged to be exposed to natural English through mass media, computers, and various audio and video tapes.

영어권 한국어 학습자를 위한 한(恨) 감성 교육 방법 연구

The current study presents a methodology of teaching the connotations and nuances of the word Han (恨) to English-speaking Korean language learners. Since Han (恨) expresses unique and traditional aspects of Korean sensibilities, the goal would be for native English speakers to be able to understand the complexities of its meaning, in spite of the differences in culture background. To this end, research was done into how Han (恨) is translated into English, as there is no term in English with the same meaning. From these findings, a list of Korean vocabulary related to the meaning of Han (恨) was made to show its definitions in English. In addition, a survey was conducted on 42 Americans to find out how English speakers understand Han (恨). As a result of this research, the current study demonstrates the need to teach the meaning of Han (恨) to Korean language learners from English-speaking countries, and suggests a teaching methodology which follows the order of Pre-Class, In-Class and After-Class study based on the Flip-Learning model.

영어권 국가에서의 한국어 음운론 연구

이 글은 그간 영어권 국가에서 이루어져 온 한국어 음운론 연구의 실태를 체계적으로 검토함으로써, 한국어 음운론 연구의 세계화를 위한 토대를 마련하는 데 목적이 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 구미 학계에서 통용되고 있는 주요 논저를 중심으로 한국어 음운론에 대한 기술 내용을 살펴보고, 그러한 기술의 타당성을 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 특히 1950년대 이후 북미 지역에서의 연구를 중심으로 논의할 것이다. 영어권에서 통용되는 한국어 음운론 관련 논저를 연구자별로 개관하고, 현대 한국어(중앙어)의 음운 체계 및 음운 현상에 대한 기술을 주요 쟁점별로 검토할 것이다. 아울러, 한국어 음운사 및 방언 음운론에 관한 논의 또한 간략히 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 작업을 통해 한국어 음운론 연구의 지평을 세계로 넓힐 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 것이 이 글의 궁극적인 목적이다. The purpose of this paper is to lay the groundwork for the globalization of the study on Korean phonology through the investigation of the existing studies on Korean phonology in English-speaking countries. Therefore, in this paper, I will examine the descriptions on Korean phonology in Euramerican countries from the critical point of view. I will discuss the adequacy of the description on Korean phonology focusing on the studies in North America since the 1950s. Firstly, I will outline the studies on Korean phonology in English-speaking countries by researchers. Next, I will examine the descriptions of the phonological systems and phonological phenomena of Contemporary Korean(Central dialect) by main issues. Lastly, I will briefly examine the studies on Korean historical phonology and Korean dialectal phonology. It is the ultimate goal of this paper that we can find the ways to broaden the horizon of the studies on Korean phonology to the world through this kind of work.

영어권 계승어 학습자를 위한 한국어 맞춤법 교육 방안 연구 -의식 고양 과제를 활용하여-

This paper aims to provide effective orthography teaching methods for heritage learners in English speaking countries. Heritage learners can naturally acquire basic Korean speaking skills. However, they lack the ability to understand Korean morphology. Heritage Korean learners make many orthography errors when they move from spoken to written form because they rely on their speaking ability and or pronunciation to write. This research therefore, has looked at previous research, in order to perform a comprehensive analysis of error types and causes to determine the direction of orthography education. The results show that the reason why heritage learners in English speaking countries find orthography difficult is because they never acquired the appropriate vocabulary or accurate grammar forms. This research sees that ‘consciousness-raising tasks’, which is a type of focus on form instruction, is effective for solving this kind of problem and suggests methods for developing effective consciousness-raising tasks and provides examples of such tasks.

Lao-tzu and Chuang-Tzu are great philosophers in ancient China. Their brilliant works Lao-tzu and Chuang-Tzu are not only the treasures of Chinese traditional culture, but also the spiritual wealth of all human beings. In recent years, the academia has paid more attention to the Taoist culture, and the research on Lao-tzu and Chuang-Tzu is on the way of development in China. Nowadays, diversification of the study becomes the main direction in China. The scholars from the history and culture department in the Huazhong Normal University have contributed a lot on the studies of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu. The Professor Xiong Tie Ji and other researchers from the history and culture department have written the first book The History of the Studies on Lao-tzu in China, and the Chinese Study of Lao-tzu in the Twentieth Century, and The History of the Studies on Chuang-tzu in China. Besides, the Chinese Study of Chuang-tzu in the Modern History is in the preparation. These two books analysis the studies of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu in China systematically, and have great influence in Chinese academe. But it is a pity that the foreign scholars’ studies of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu haven’t been attached enough importance. In fact, as the development of the reform and opening?up, more and more foreign scholars paid attention to the Chinese history and culture. They begin to study on the Chinese culture, especially the Taoist and Taoism culture. From 18th to 19th century, it’s the missionaries who let the West know the Lao-tzu from China. But after the World War, people despaired with the Western culture became seek comforts from the East, especially China. Many scholars began to pay attention to the Lao-tzu. In 1773 some new texts were found in the Ma Wang Dui in Chang sha, they attract many scholars’ interests. Form then, the study of Lao-tzu became popular in the home and broad. Different from the study of Chuang-tzu, some Chinese scholars have tried to do some research on the study of Chuang-tzu in the English?speaking countries. Vice Professor Bao Zhaohui in Nanjing University has published a paper which is on the study of Chuang-tzu in the English?speaking countries. Besides, there appears some paper for the Doctor’s Degree in Fudan Universiry. Recently, some new scholars summarize the studies of Lao-tzu in the West. Zhang Juan Fang has published her paper for the doctor’s degree Studies of Lao-tzu in the West of the 20th century, introduced more than ten scholars and their productions. Xin Hong Juan also written a book Tao-Te Ching in the English Speaking Country described the spread of Lao-tzu in more than five centuries. This paper retrospect the development of the studies of Lao-tzu and Chuangtzu in China and the in the English Speaking Country, summarizes the studies of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu in the twentieth century, and estimates the typical scholars and their productions. In all, this paper brings forth the developments of the studies of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu in the in the English Speaking Country, in the twentieth century.

영어권 초급 한국어 학습자를 위한 학습자용 참고서 개발 기초 연구 -교재 분석과 학습자 요구 분석을 중심으로-

The main purpose of this research is to develop a supplement guide to use during Korean language lectures for Korean beginners from English-speaking countries. The main foci of the research include assessing the need of such Korean supplement, what content should be included in the supplement if needed, and what should be considered while writing the supplement. Analysis were performed for published Sogang Korean grammar and vocabulary supplement and supplements of Japanese, German, and Russian textbooks. Subsequently, surveys were given to 32 beginners from English-speaking countries to analyze the need of such supplement, followed by in-depth interviews to 3 students. The students unanimously responded for the need of a supplementary guide. As for the content, the students responded for the need of more detailed explanations of grammar, vocabulary, and expressions. The results of the surveys and contents of supplementary guide published from Korean supplementary book were compared and analyzed.

제2차 세계대전 이후 영어권 및 불어권 국가에 있어 지역지리학의 발달

근대 지리학이 성립한 이래 지리학의 핵심으로 굳건히 자리 잡아 온 지역지리학은 제2차 세계대전 이후 비과학적이라는 비판을 받았을 뿐만 아니라 폐기되어야 한다는 주장까지도 받았다. 특히 지역지리학은 1950년대에 들어서서 계량혁명을 거치면서 논리실증주의를 바탕으로 한 공간분석 지리학이 등장하면서 지리학의 주변으로 밀려 나기도 했다. 그러나 지리학 내에서 지역지리학의 의의가 꾸준히 강조되고 그 필요성이 제기되면서, 1980년대 이후 지역지리학은 르네상스를 맞이하기도 했다. 이 논문은 영어권 및 불어권 국가들을 중심으로 지역지리학의 역사적 변천과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 제2차 세계대전 이후 지역지리학에 대한 비판과 함께 지역지리학에 대해 제기된 문제점들을 먼저 살펴보고, 이를 뒤이어 1980년대를 거치면서 새롭게 대두한 신지역지리학와 함께 그 발전흐름을 고찰하고자 한다. Regional geography, once considered the centerpiece of modern geography, was not only criticized as unscientific after World War II, but also argued that it needed to be abolished. In particular, regional geography was pushed into the margins of geography by the ‘Quantitative Revolution,’ when the so-called ‘spatial geography’ based on logical positivism emerged. However, since the 1980s, regional geography has even experienced a renaissance, emphasizing the importance of regional geography within geography. This article examines the historical process of changes in regional geography with a focus on English- and French-speaking countries. In addition to the criticism of regional geography after the Second World War, the problems raised in regional geography were first explained, and since the 1980s the new regional geography and its direction of development has been analyzed.

중소기업의 현지브랜드 개발과 브랜드 컨설팅 프레임워크

해외진출기업의 브랜드 개발을 위한 브랜드 컨설팅은 현지의 시장 및 소비자 분석, 그리고 기업의 역량 및 자원에 대한 진단을 포함한 내외부의 환경 분석에서부터, 브랜드 전략의 수립, 브랜드 컨셉의 개발, 그리고 디자인 개발에 이르기 까지 제품의 해외 런칭 이전에 선행되는 많은 단계들을 포함하는 개념이다. 따라서 해외진출 브랜드 컨설팅은 브랜드에 대한 전문성을 바탕으로 한 국제마케팅, 디자인, 그리고 국내외 상표권 전문가들의 공동노력이 이 루어질 때만이 성공적인 수행이 가능하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 해외진출기업의 브랜드 개발, 특히 기업역량이 대기업들에 비해 상대적으로 더 적은 것으로 평가되는 중소기업의 비영어권 국가 진출 시 현지브랜드 개발을 지원하 기 위한 브랜드 컨설팅 프레임워크를 제시하기 위해서 진행되었다. 본 연구는 중소기업들을 대상으로 현지브랜드에 대한 수요조사 결과를 포함한다. 그리고 다년간에 걸친 시행착오를 거쳐 현장에서 이루어진 브랜드 컨설팅 프레임워 크는 현지브랜드 컨설팅을 수행하는 브랜드 전문가뿐만 아니라 해외진출 브랜드 컨설팅을 의뢰하는 중소기업들에게 도 상당히 의미 있는 지침이 되리라고 기대한다. The brand consulting for paving the way for overseas-based companies to develop local brands includes many processes such as the analysis of local markets and consumers, the analysis of in-and-out circumstances including the diagnosis of corporate competence and resource, the establishment of brand strategies, the development of brand concepts, and the development of design, which should be performed before the eventual launch of overseas markets. So, the success of overseas-based brand consulting just depends on coworking(i.e., consortium) by brand experts from international marketing, design to local-overseas brand rights which have been barely touched upon by the brand experts. This study aims to present brand consulting framework and to support the development of local-fit brands when the small and medium industries, esteemed relatively less compatible than conglomerates, expand their business in the non-English-speaking countries. This study also includes the results of a demand inquiry on the local fit brand targeted for SMEs. As a brand consulting framework which has been performed at work sites through the accumulated many year's trial and error, it could be a significantly meaningful guidance for the brand experts who perform local-fit brands consulting and the SMEs who look for overseas-based brand consulting.
