        A Study on a Business English Teaching-Learning Method Using Movies and Videos

        Business communication skills have been an important factor in enhancing the competitiveness of countries and organizations due to the increase in international business as a result of the globalization. Our educational institutions still don't meet the needs of learners and industry. In order to cultivate a business professional manpower equipped with practical English competence and communication skills that are required in the workplace at university level in Korea, this study develops a business English teaching-learning method using movies & videos, applies it to the 'Business English' classes which consist of forty-three students during the fall semester of 2012 and evaluates the effectiveness of the method. Questionnaires are used to collect the data. The result shows that most of the participants of this study think that the method makes it easier to learn (81.4%), is fun (95.3%), motivates learning (72.1%), enables them to learn a variety of English pronunciation and intonation (86%), exposes them to actual spoken language (81.4%), helps to strengthen communication skills (81.4%), provides the opportunity to practice English (72.1%), enables them to learn about foreign business culture (86%), and encourages cooperative learning (43.5%). As for the effectiveness of the method, 93% of the participants show positive responses.

        분야별 일반어휘, 학문어휘 및 기타어휘 비율 비교 분석 - 경영학, 생물학, 영어교육학 연구논문을 중심으로 -

        이 논문은 한국어모국어자와 영어모국어자가 영어로 작성한 경영학, 생물학, 영어교육학 연구 논문에 나타난 일반어휘, 학문어휘 및 기타어휘의 사용양상을 비교 분석한다. 이를 위하여 한국어모국어자가 영어로 작성한 경영학 논문 60편, 영어교육학 논문 60편과 영어모국어자가 영어로 작성한 경영한 논문 60편, 영어교육학 논문 60편에 사용된 일반어휘, 학문어휘, 기타어휘의 사용 양상을 살펴본다. 또한 이 240개 논문에서 추출된 어휘 사용 양상을 정소우의 생물학 영어 논문 어휘 분석 결과와 비교분석하였다. 이러한 비교 분석을 통하여 영어로 작성된 논문에 사용된 일반어휘, 학문어휘, 기타어휘 사용 비율은 저자의 모국어보다는 학문분야와 더 큰 연관성을 갖는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 자료별로 사용된 일반어휘 수와 학문어휘 수의 합이 전체 어휘 대비 90%를 넘는 자료는 하나도 없었다. 그러므로 에이브럴 콕스헤드와 마이클 스텁스 등의 학자들이 제안하듯이 대학교재나 연구 논문을 편하게 읽기 위해 필요한 90% 이상의 어휘 지식을 갖추기 위해서는 일반어휘와 학문어휘에 속하지 않는 기타어휘를 어휘 학습 목록에 추가할 필요가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 더 나아가, 총어휘 대비 일반어휘와 학문어휘의 사용 비율이 약 86% 정도에 가까웠던 경영학 논문 자료와 영어교육 논문 자료에 비하여, 생물학 논문 자료에서는 그 비율이 약 67% ~ 74%에 불과하여, 학습 어휘 목록이 전공별로 설계되어야 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. This paper explored the differences between the use patterns of West(1953)`s General Service words and Coxhead(2000)`s Academic words in research papers on Business Administration, Biology, and English Education, written in English by native speakers of Korean and native speakers of English. The comparative analysis results showed that the text coverages of the General Service List words in research papers on Business Administration, Biology, and English education by Korean native speakers were about 73.43%, 59.78%, and 75.84%, respectively, while those by English native speakers were around 70.35%,, 64.38%, and 75.93%, respectively. They revealed that the text coverage ratios of Academic words in research papers on Business Administration, Biology, and English education by Koreans were about 13.82%, 8.46%, and 11.47%, respectively, while those by English native speakers were some 13.50%, 9.56%, and 11.25%, respectively. The results suggested that text coverages of the GSL words and AWL words in research papers are more related with the researchers` fields of study rather than their mother tongues. They also implied that Coxhead`s AWL might be more useful for students and professionals of business administration than for those of Biology or English Education.

        비즈니스 한국어 교육을 위한 한·영 이메일 어휘와 표현 비교

        The purpose of this study is to examine business email vocabulary items and expressions for the best professional email writing practices for learners of Korean for General Business Purposes (KGBP). This corpus-based research analyzes business emails written in Korean and in English. The aim of this study is to identify authentic expressions used in professional emails, so KGBP learners can use such expressions in the workplace. To highlight certain expressions used in professional emails, two corpora were used: Korean Business Email Corpus (K-BEC) and American Business Email Corpus (A-BEC). In both Korean and English emails, writers frequently adopt a certain email type. This study finds that there is a tendency to use certain specific English loanwords and idiomatic expressions, based on the email type in K-BEC.

        교양과목으로서 실무영어 수업 제안과 효과성

        The purpose of this study is to suggest effective procedures and contents for teaching Business English as a liberal arts subject. I used two kinds of questionnaires in this study. The first surveys students`` English levels, preferred class activities, and characteristics, such as goals, interests, strengths, weaknesses, and needs. I used the results to inform the syllabus and lesson procedure. The main content related to Business English consisted of a movie script and auxiliary textbooks. They contained expressions used in the office, on a resume, in a self-introduction, on a listening evaluation sheet and activity, etc. I used a movie, group activity, pop song, role-play, quiz, and a presentation of culture in class. In the second survey, at the end of the semester, I verified student levels, preferred class activities, and satisfaction with my Business English course and the lesson procedure. I focused on students`` academic performance and learner-centered education. The conclusion is that Business English as a liberal arts subject is useful for many job seekers, and movie scripts suit students`` needs and interests.

        경영학 전공과목에 대한 영어강의 서비스품질과 선행요인 그리고 성과와의 관계

        EMI(English Medium Instruction) has been widely adopted among many Korean universities as an effective means to enhance both the professional skills and the English proficiency of students. Although EMI is one of the most important changes made in Korean universities, it is claimed to have not received much extensive research attentions in Korea. This study measured the effectiveness of EMI in terms of the service quality and analyzed the relationship among the service quality and its influencing factors and performances. The service quality measurement developed in this study consists of 24 items based upon the SERVQUAL’s five dimensions. Personal attributes of students were examined as influencing factors of the service quality and involve 3 major categories;demographical attributes, English-related attributes and personal values. Performance variables include satisfaction and intention to recommend the EMI course to friends. Female students showed lover service quality evaluation compared to their male counterparts. English proficiency of students showed a negative impact on the service quality evaluation. Students with higher “self-respect” value showed higher service quality evaluation. Finally the service quality evaluation revealed higher positive relationship with satisfaction and intention to recommend. It is suggested that EMI implementation need to incorporate students’ different English proficiency levels. 전문성과 영어구사 능력을 겸비한 글로벌 인재의 양성을 목적으로 대학에서 전공과목에 대한 영어강의(English Medium Instruction)가 확산되고 있다. 영어강의가 대학교육에 미치는 영향이 지대함에도 불구하고, 영어강의의 효과나 실행상의 문제점들에 대한 체계적인 연구와 분석 없이 많은 대학들이 경쟁적으로 영어강의를 실시함으로써 상당한 시행착오를 초래하고 있다. 본 연구는 대학에서 경영학 전공과목의 영어강의의 서비스 품질을 평가하고 이에 영향을 미치는 요인들과 성과와의 관계를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 영어강의 서비스 품질은 SERVQUAL의 5가지 차원을 이용하여 측정하였다. 서비스 품질의 영향요인은 수강자들의 개인적 특성에 초점을 맞추었으며, 성과변수로는 만족과 추천의도를 사용하였다. 여학생의 서비스 품질 평가가 남학생에 비해 낮으며, 또한 영어활용능력이 높을수록 서비스품질 평가가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 현실적으로 전공과목 영어강의가 영어활용능력이 우수한 수강자의 기대를 상대적으로 만족시키지 못하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그리고 “자존감”에 대한 가치를 중요하게 생각하는 수강자일 수록 서비스 품질을 높게 평가하였다. 서비스품질은 성과변수인 만족과 추천의도와 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 본 연구는 영어강의의 서비스품질의 영향요인으로 개인적 특성에 한정하였으나, 향후 강사 및 과목의 특성을 포함한 다양한 영향요인을 고려한 연구가 필요할 것이다.

      • A Digital Education Made Personal: An Examination of the Impact of Personalized Business English Education at Bayer Korea

        Objectives:Many companies have transitioned into digital education, allowing learners to select a learning time, place, and curriculum that best suits them. In this case report, we share cases of individuals and businesses selecting and learning content that fit their strategies and needs, rather than taking part in a general training path. Methods:The contents of individualization and personalization are different. Individualization refers to learning only the material that one prefers; personalization is not only about one’s preferred content, but it also refers to improvements in Skillsoft technology by including additional content. This study analyzes the impact of providing personalized content to office workers. Results:Continuous learning, personal satisfaction, and fulfillment of individual learners were higher when a personalized training path was provided, compared to the fixed and general business English training path. This helped learners improve their confidence in using business English for their work as they were able to apply it immediately; furthermore, it helped them save time. Conclusions:Office workers value time more than anyone else. When they make time to study business English, efficiency is an important factor. A general and broad training path does not motivate learners. On the other hand, personalized contents based on the company’s global strategy, along with personal interests, allow learners to realize the value of education in their work, motivating them to invest time into learning business English and giving them a sense of satisfaction and confidence in using it.

        경영학 전공에 대한 EMI 서비스 품질평가와 개선 우선순위 도출

        EMI(English Medium Instruction) is widely adopted in many Korean universities with the globalization trend. In spite of the significance of its impacts, the implementation of EMI has not been well planned and analyzed. If EMI is implemented successfully, then students will not only obtain professional knowledge in their specialty area but also improve their English proficiency. It’s like killing two birds with one stone. But if it is ill-prepared, we lose both. Not much work has been done so far to evaluate the effectiveness of EMI for business major subjects. This study attempts to evaluate EMI courses of business major in terms of service quality. To evaluate the service quality, service quality attributes were developed based on SERVQUAL, one of the most popular techniques for measuring service quality. Also the fuzzy techniques presented by Linn(2010) is applied to analyze the service quality of EMI courses of business major. 글로벌화와 더불어 모든 분야에서 경쟁이 심화됨에 따라 영어의 중요성이 새롭게 강조되고 이에 따라 대학에서 전공과목의 영어강의 붐이 널리 확산되었다. 영어를 매개로 하는 전공과목의 영어원어강의(EMI: English Medium Instruction)는 대학의 선진화와 혁신의지를 평가하는 하나의 중요한 지표로 인식되었으며 대학들도 앞 다투어 거의 모든 학문분야에서 EMI를 실시하고 있다. 그러나 각 대학에서 사전준비가 제대로 이루어지지 않은 상태에서 무계획적으로 실시되는 EMI는 여러 가지 시행착오를 유발하게 되고 또한 EMI의 필요성과 효과성에 대한 근본적인 논란을 불러일으키게 된다. 대학교육에서 EMI의 파급효과와 영향이 매우 큼에도 불구하고, EMI에 대한 체계적인 평가나 실증적인 분석이 매우 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구는 서비스 품질의 관점에서 경영학 전공에 대한 EMI를 평가하고 서비스 품질 개선을 위한 우선순위를 도출하고자 한다. EMI 서비스 품질 평가를 위해서는 서비스 품질 평가 도구로 가장 널리 이용되고 있는 SERVQUAL을 바탕으로 EMI 서비스 품질 속성을 제시하였으며, 서비스 품질 개선을 위한 우선순위 도출에는 Lin(2010)의 퍼지기법이 적용되었다.

      • 产教融合背景下商务英语专业学生能力提升路径研究

        产教融合既是一种教育理念,也是校企合作的手段之一。现阶段立足产教融合背景,针对商务英语专业学生的综合能力提升实施教学,仍存在诸多弊端,如教学设计缺乏合理性、专业规划前瞻性不足、师资配备不完善等,若该类问题不能尽快解决,必然会对商务英语专业的人才培养质量造成极大影响,同时也会限制学生主体核心竞争力提升。本文先行分析了产教融合内涵与产业融合背景下商务英语专业教学的现存问题,通过规划商务英语专业发展、生成全新课程体系、优化教师培养路径和建立多元评价机制等方面对学生能力提升做出相应改进。 Integration of industry and education is not only an educational concept, but also one of the means of school-enterprise cooperation. Based on the current background of integration of industry and education, there are still many shortcomings in the implementation of teaching aimed at enhancing the comprehensive abilities of business English major students, such as the lack of rationality in teaching design, insufficient foresight in professional planning, and inadequate teacher allocation. If these problems cannot be solved as soon as possible, it will inevitably have a great impact on the quality of talent training in the field of business English, and also restrict the improvement of students’ core competitiveness. This paper first analyzes the connotation of integration of industry and education and the existing problems in teaching business English major under the background of integration of industry, and then proposes corresponding improvements for enhancing students’ abilities, including planning the development of business English major, creating a new curriculum system, optimizing the teacher training path, and establishing a diversified evaluation mechanism.

        에스티앤컴퍼니 : 영단기의 성인 영어교육 시장 후발진입 전략

        많은 대학과 기업에서 토익, 토플 등 각종 영어 자격시험 점수를 요구함에 따라 성인들의 영어학습 수요는 꾸준히 증가해 왔다. 에스티앤컴퍼니의 ‘영단기’는 성인 영어교육 시장 중에서도 가장 치열한 격전지인 토익교육 시장에 도전장을 내밀었다. 이들은 초기 브랜드 홍보에 과감하게 투자하는 동시에 수요자 입장을 고려한 입소문 및 광고 전략을 펼쳐 단기간에 업계 선두주자의 반열에 올라 토익교육 시장에 반란을 일으켰다. 본 연구는 후발주자로서 영단기가 실시한 창업 및 성장 전략을 집중적으로 조명하고 있다. 오늘날 대부분의 산업은 기업간 경쟁이 포화상태에 이르렀거나, 대규모 자본의 소수 기업이 독점하는 형태를 띠고 있다. 이와 같은 시장에 후발 진입하는 기업은 기존 경쟁자들이 충족시키지 못한 소비자 니즈를 포착하고 시장 내에서 차별화된 성장전략을 펼쳐야지만 치열한 경쟁 속에서 살아 남을 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 소규모 후발주자라는 약점을 성공적으로 극복한 영단기 사례를 통해 후발주자로서 신규 창업을 기획하는 기업가들이 참고할 수 있는 실무적 시사점을 제시하고자 하였다. Engdangi, which established in 2010 by ST&Company, first developed lecture materials specially focused on TOEIC on behalf of the increasing demand of standardized exam for English language skills. With novel ideas and strategic plans, Engdangi has experienced rapid growth and is expected to expand further in online education industry. Though three strong players have enchroached on the market share in English language institutes for adults, Engdangi is approaching number one in market share by defeating its existing competitors in Korea. The purpose of this case is to introduce Engdangi’s successful growth strategies as a small size late-mover in the market. For this purpose, the case summarizes key strategic plans Engdangi has developed to build brand awareness and to differentiate among its competitors. In addition, the case reviews considerable factors playing as a venture company in the established market.
