The anti-melanogenic effects of the extract of Angelica tenuissima (AT) root and the extract of AT root fermented by Aspergillus oryzae (FAT) were investigated. These effects were determined by measuring the inhibitory activity of AT and FAT on melanin production in B16F10 melanocytes and with in vitro tyrosinase activity assays. The AT extract inhibited melanin production at concentrations above 250 μg/ml, and this inhibitory effect was significantly enhanced by the fermentation process with A. oryzae. HPLC analysis resulted in the isolation of two active compounds from both the AT and FAT extracts. Their chemical structures were identified as decursin and Z-ligustilide through comparison with previously reported NMR data. The decursin and Z-ligustilide contents were increased in the FAT extract and could be responsible for its enhanced inhibitory effects on melanin production and tyrosinase activity compared with that of the AT extract.
Preliminary study for aging of latent fingerprints on nonporous substrate

Fingerprints play a crucial role in the identification of potential suspects in criminal cases. However, determining the actual time, i.e., the time at which the fingermark was deposited, is challenging. Herein, we investigated the persistence and aging of fingerprints over time by observing the time evolution of latent fingerprints on a polystyrene box stored in a dark room. Fingerprint samples that were stored for up to two years could be detected with maximum accuracy using a black iron-oxide-based emulsion (black emulsion). To estimate the time of fingerprint deposition, fingerprint aging was studied by analyzing the lipid components of the fingerprints after their development. Cholesterol and squalene were selected as indicators of fingerprint aging, and their ratio was estimated to assess aging. In the case of fingerprint samples stored in a dark room for up to one month after deposition, the cholesterol/squalene ratio was approximately 0.01; it increased gradually to ≥ 0.1 over six months. A substantial reduction in the levels of cholesterol and squalene from the initial levels was also noted. Cholesterol and squalene were not detected after one year of storage. Thus, the extent of aging could be determined by analyzing the aging indicators for up to six months. Two cases that could cause error in the estimation of the fingerprint deposition time, namely, heating of the fingerprint sample before development and storage of the developed fingerprints in a dark room, were also investigated.
Iterative Relay Scheduling with Hybrid ARQ for Type-2 Relays

We propose an iterative relay scheduling with hybrid ARQ (IRS-HARQ) which realizes fast jump-in/successive relaying and subframe decoding to facilitate user equipment (UE or type-2) relays for next-generation cellular systems (e.g., LTE-Advanced), especially when operating in an open-loop and transparent mode. The proposed IRS-HARQ aims to increase the achievable data rate by iteratively scheduling a relatively better UE relay closer to the end user in a probabilistic sense, provided that the UE relay-to-end user link should be operated in an open-loop and transparent mode. The latter is due to the fact that not only there are no dedicated control channels between the UE relay and the end user but also a new cell is not created. Under this open-loop and transparent mode, we implement the IRS-HARQ by partially exploiting the channel state information, based on the overhearing mechanism of ACK/NACK for HARQ.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A highly sensitive tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)<SUB>3</SUB> <SUP>2+</SUP>] electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for the detection of ethanol based on ADH and NAD<SUP>+</SUP> cofactor with ionic liquid (IL) doped sol-gel titania-Nafion composite film has been developed. Regardless of the type of the ILs, the incorporation of IL in the composite resulted in the enhancement in both the electron transfer and diffusion rates in the composite modified electrode, thus leading to dramatic increase in ECL intensity. Among several ILs tested, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium with chloride counter anion was most effective for the construction of the Ru(bpy)<SUB>3</SUB> <SUP>2+</SUP> ECL biosensor. Two-layer system with the inner layer of Ru(bpy)<SUB>3</SUB> <SUP>2+</SUP> immobilized in IL-titania-Nafion composite film and the outer layer of ADH immobilized in titania-Nafion composite film has been used to maintain the activity of the enzyme and the overall stability of the ECL biosensor. The present biosensor exhibited linear response towards ethanol with a linear dynamic range of 1.2 × 10<SUP>−5</SUP> M–2.5 × 10<SUP>−1</SUP> M and a detection limit of 5.0 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP> M (S/N = 3). The outstanding dynamic range showed the applicability of the present biosensor for ethanol detection not only in human blood but also in a variety of different fields such as alcoholic beverages or other commercially available products.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The ECL ethanol biosensor has been developed. </LI> <LI> Ionic liquid was incorporated in sol-gel titania-Nafion composite film. </LI> <LI> 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium with chloride was most effective. </LI> <LI> ECL biosensor showed high sensitivity towards ethanol. </LI> <LI> ECL biosensor was applied for ethanol detection in real sample. </LI> </UL> </P>
