<B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>The cover shows an image of fully rollable transparent nanogenerators synthesized using chemical vapor deposition grown large-scale graphene sheets as transparent electrodes and piezoelectric ZnO nanorod arrays. Sang-Woo Kim, Jae-Young Choi, and co-workers report on p. 2187 the electrical and structural stability of the nanogenerators, with excellent charge scavenging performance under external mechanical loads such as bending and rolling. This study shows that graphene-based nanogenerators are very promising for self-powered rollable transparent device applications. <img src='wiley_img_2010/09359648-2010-22-19-ADMA201090066-content.gif' alt='wiley_img_2010/09359648-2010-22-19-ADMA201090066-content'> </P>

It is well-known that Titanium (Ti) and Ti alloys demonstrate the most biocompatibility. The current research examined the initial ossification and formations of bone contacts upon implanting 4 types of implants with different surface treatments. Total of 20 samples were used during the experiment and categorized into sand-blasted large grit acidetched (SLA) surface treatment group, SLA+ surface treatment group, Active surface treatment group and Zn-Anodizing 340 V surface treatment group. Two implants were placed on the left side and right side each of tibia and sacrificed after 4 weeks period. Tibias of rabbits were produced into specimen slides with a thickness of 15 µm instead of traditional thickness of over 50 µm and we could get the good resolution. In histomorphometrically measured bone implant contact rates, significant differences of SLA+ and Zn-Ano are recognized, and the Zn-Anodizing surface treatment group displayed higher results than all other groups. In the results of histomorphometrically measuring and comparing the surface area rates, differences between of SLA and SLA+ are significantly recognized than comparisons of other groups, and the SLA surface treatment group scored the highest. It may be concluded that the period for implant masticatory functions may be shortened when using both of Zn-Anodizing and SLA implants and suggested that the semi-thin section produced the good result.

This study evaluated the success rate of expansion, phenotype characterization and differentiation capacity of dental pulp mesenchymal stromal cells (DP-MSCs) in Low glucose Dulbecco`s (DMEM) and Alpha modification of Eagle`s medium (α-MEM). Efficacy of a commercial serum free medium was also evaluated. Dental pulps from extracted third molars of 36 patients was obtained:18 samples immersed in DMEM based media(group DMEM), 18 samples in α-MEM based media (group α-MEM ), 11 of 18 samples of group α-MEM were also cultured in commercial serum free media (group SF). Expansion success rate and surface phenotype was analyzed. Then, osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation were proceeded. Chondrogenesis was induced in group SF and cells with the best expansion rate between the DMEM and α-MEM group. Group α-MEM showed significantly higher expansion success rates than DMEM (X2 test). All groups expressed CD105, CD73, CD90 and CD166, but lacked CD45, CD34 and HLA-DR surface molecules. Group α-MEM expressed significantly higher MSC purity (Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test) and differentiation potential (Fishers Exact Test) than group DMEM. Although group SF had slightly better expansion success rate than DP-MSCs in DMEM, group SF did not surpass MSC purity or differential potential of α-MEM. In this primary study for establishing standardized conditions to expand vast numbers of highquality DP- MSCs, showed that the cells had higher success rate of expansion, level of MSC purity, and differentiation potential in α-MEM based media than DMEM. So, α-MEM is designated as the better in vitro DP-MSC culture medium.

<P> Purpose: Dose uniformity in cell culture vessels such as Petri dishes and anoxic irradiation chambers is very important in radiobiological work as dose uniformity affects cell survival probabilities. In this study, we investigated X-ray dose inhomogeneity, caused by scattering, in typical culture vessels. Materials and methods: Three different cubic cell culture vessels, with side lengths of 10 cm, 15 cm and 20 cm, were designed and irradiated by X-rays of 6 MV and 15 MV at a source-to-surface distance (SSD) of 100 cm using a Varian 2100CD linear accelerator. Results: The relative X-ray dose distribution in a cell culture vessel depended strongly on whether the vessel had a lid. The percentage of the cell culture surface with the dose differing by more than 10% from the mean value of the dose was 43.4% in lidless vessels and 9.7% in lidded vessels. Conclusions: In radiobiological work, X-ray dose inhomogeneity within a cell culture vessel is not negligible and the placement of cells in the vessel should be carefully considered.</P>

In recent years there have been renewed interests in the use of air ionization to control the spread of airborne infection and malodor. An ion cluster is a group of 10-60 oxygen molecules. Clustered ions tend to bundle up microbes, germs and fungi. Deodorization and sterilization are achieved through those characteristics. The ion cluster turns back into a simple oxygen molecule status due to the ion equilibrium in 120 seconds. However, it remains unclear whether clustered ions are safe or not for physical and biological mechanisms. A study was, therefore, undertaken to determine the safety associated with common use of the IonCluster® (SUDO Premium Engineering Co., Ltd.). We installed the IonCluster® in supply duct of one individual ventilated cages (IVC) rack for test groups. And the animals were analyzed for body weighing, water intakes, food intakes, blood pressure, heart rate, organ weight, histopathology (cornea, trachea and lung), hematology and blood chemistry in 11 and 22 weeks, control versus treatment groups. Food intake in 9 weeks old IonCluster®-treated females was significantly lower than controls. Water intakes were significantly increased in 11, 18 and 19 weeks old IonCluster®-treated males, compared to those of controls. The levels of alkaline phosphatase in male mice and phosphorus in female mice were significantly lower than controls. There were no considerable treatment-related changes in the body weights and absolute organ weights except for the decrease in the weight of left adrenal gland of IonCluster®-treated males. In addition, no meaningful changes in the histopathological findings of target organs were observed in treatment groups compared to controls. This study demonstrates that IonCluster® does not cause any toxicological signs, and has safety by newly developed deodorizer of the air in the laboratory animal facility.

Karyotype analyses of four kinds of hot pepper plants, non-GM control lines of P2377 and P915 and their virus resistant GM events of H15 and B20, respectively, were conducted to confirm the stability of chromosome constitution in transgenic hot pepper plants and to provide a preliminary study for the detection of transgenes on the metaphase chromosomes. Chromosome numbers in somatic cells were 2n=24 in all plants. The karyotypes were composed of ten pairs of metacentrics, one pair of submetacentrics and one pair of subtelocentrics. The length of the mitotic metaphase chromosomes ranged from 3.28 to 4.93 ㎛ in P2377, 3.65 to 5.58 ㎛ in H15, 3.17 to 5.30 ㎛ in P915 and 3.15 to 5.75 ㎛ in B20. Two pairs of secondary constrictions were observed in P2377 and H15, whereas one pair was observed in P915 and B20. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) revealed that locations of 5S rDNA were at the subterminal parts of the long arms of chromosome d in all plants. Two pairs of 45S rDNA signals were detected on the secondary constrictions in P2377 and H15, whereas one pair of major 45S rDNA signals was detected at the secondary constrictions and one pair of minor signals was detected at the distal parts of chromosome e in P915 and B20. No significant difference in karyotypic constitution was observed between the parental control lines and their transgenic events. The results presented here will be useful in basic studies of breeding and assessment of GM hot peppers.
