The politics of gender representation and successful ageing in internet pornography

        Yu Yilin 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2022 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.28 No.4

The current cultural discourse of successful ageing tends to reinvigorate the graying population into young, energetic and healthy social beings throug prescriptions of active sexuality. On TV, in movies and advertising, the term ‘sexy oldies’ has emerged to uphold this script about old people and their sexuality. However, what seems to be troubling about the (online) depiction of the ageing demographic is its rigid and homogenous portrayal of old people and their sexuality that misrepresents aspects of gender and age, especially when it refers in an unfavorable manner to the bodies of older women in the mass media. Delving into the sexual portrayal of old persons in internet pornography, this paper scrutinizes the politics and problematic of gender representation and successful ageing via a content analysis of a popular porn website, XVideos. I argue here that although the online appearance of sexy oldies transmits a positive cultural signal that affirms the existential significance of older women, it provides a sexist and ageist handling of their bodies, especially how their online identities are presented. The question then is about the need to redress this and seek more gender equal representations.

Reframing Asian Muslim Women in the Name of Honor : Neo-Orientalism and Gender Politics in Mukhtar Mai’s Constructed Narratives

        YU, Yilin 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2010 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.16 No.4

Honor rape has oftentimes been severely criticized as extreme violation of human rights by western human rights advocates. Although the mainstreaming of human rights discourse since the 1990s is part of the aspiration for a global civil society, it often does so bypigeonholing non-western others into stereotypes. Mukhtar Mai’s memoir, In the Name of Honor, for instance, was published as a hot commodity in the West after her ordeal of honor rape had been addressed by a New York Times journalist as a barbaric tradition and an act of terrorism. Mai’s memoir, however, is expressed in the rhetoric of neo-Orientalism, as it reframes Asian Muslim women in terms of the notion of honor. By exploring her constructed narratives, this paper investigates the ways in which false gender representations sustain the continuity of neo-Orientalism.

Modification of disused floral foam with polyethylene diamine for the removal of heavy metal ions

Yilin Yu,Jindeng Huang,Yingmin Liao,Zhixiang Lin,Xiaojia Huang 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.128 No.-

Floral foam (FF) based on phenol formaldehyde resin has been used widely for many years, but it is reusedrarely and the discarded FF is harmful to environment. Therefore, recycling of disused FF is interestingand highly required. In current study, a new strategy for reutilization of disused FF was proposed. FFwhich had been treated with NaOH solution was dipped in polyethyleneimine (PEI) solution to anchoractive amino groups on the framework of FF, and then glutaraldehyde was employed to cross-link theanchored PEI to obtain a novel adsorbent based on disused FF (PEI@FF). Due to the abundant aminogroups, the prepared adsorbent displayed satisfactory chelating ability towards heavy metal ions. Under the optimal synthesis and adsorption conditions, the PEI@FF was applied to remove Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in environmental waters, and the removal rates varied from 91.4% to 95.6%, which weremuch higher than that achieved on unmodified FF (35–43%). Additionally, the PEI@FF exhibited goodbatch-to-batch preparation repeatability and acceptable number of cyclic utilization. The satisfactoryresults well evidence the proposed method is practicable for reutilization of discarded FF, and the presentstudy also supplies a new adsorbent for the high efficient removal of heavy metal ions.

Trapidil determines the fate of RHF rats through inhibition of ER stress

        Yilin Wang,Yu Wang,Chengxi Wei,Quan Wan,Zhifei Fan,Liying Xuan,Wanru Geng,Liqun Shao,Jie Long,Junyi Gu,Ming Zhao 대한약학회 2020 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.43 No.4

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a fatal disease, especially when it causes right heart failure (RHF). However, it is difficult to treat. It has been reported thattrapidil (Tra) can improve the redox balance and cardiacconditions. In this study, we investigated the effect of Tra onRHF induced by monocrotaline (MCT) in rats. Male Wistarrats were treated with MCT or Tra. Treatment lasted 28 days, then rats were euthanized after echocardiography and catheterization. Subsequently, lungs and right ventricular myocardiawere evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin, Masson, and TUNEL staining. Protein expression was detected bywestern blotting. We found remarkably expanded rightventricle end-diastolic volume, decreased partial pressureof oxygen (PaO2), increased partial pressure of carbondioxide (PaCO2), right ventricular systolic pressure, meanpulmonary arterial pressure, lung/body weight, and liver/body weight in the RHF rat group, as well as increases inthe apoptosis rate and the expression of endoplasmic reticulumstress (ERS)-related proteins. However, these changes were significantly inhibited by Tra. Our data suggested thatinhibition of ERS is essential for improving RHF, and thattherapeutic intervention of Tra in RHF rats works by reducingERS.

      • Modal identification of time-varying vehicle-bridge system using a single sensor

        Wen-Yu He,Yilin Li,Wei-Xin Ren,Junfei Li,Zhi-Wei Chen 국제구조공학회 2022 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.30 No.1

Modal parameters are widely used in bridge damage detection, finite element model (FEM) updating and design optimization. However, the conventional modal identification approaches require large number of sensors, enormous data processing workload, but normally result in mode shapes with low accuracy. This paper proposes a modal identification method of time-varying vehicle-bridge system using a single sensor. Firstly, the essential physical relationship between the instantaneous frequency of the vehicle-bridge system and the bridge mode shapes are derived. Subsequently, based on the synchroextracting transform, the instantaneous frequency of the system is tracked through the dynamic response collected by a single sensor, and further the modal parameters are estimated by using the derived physical relationship. Then numerical and experimental examples are conducted to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the modal parameters identified by the proposed method are applied in bridge FEM updating. The results manifest that the proposed method identifies the modal parameters with high accuracy via a single sensor, and can provide reliable data for the FEM updating.

Bioinspired Fabrication and Evaluation of Molecularly Imprinted Nanocomposite Membranes with Inorganic/Organic Multilevel Structure for the Selective Separation of Emodin

        Chao Yu,Jian Lu,Qi Zhang,Hougang Fan,Minjia Meng,Shi Zhou,Yinhua Jiang,Yongsheng Yan,Yilin Wu,Chunxiang Li 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2019 NANO Vol.14 No.2

High purity emodin is in great demand with the development of medical treatment. Molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) have gained wide attention for selective separation of emodin due to its preferable selectivity. In this work, we describe a simple two-step method for developing emodin-imprinted TiO2@CA (ETMIMs) and emodin-imprinted SiO2@CA (ESMIMs) based on organic–inorganic nanoparticle (SiO2/TiO2) modified cellulose acetate membranes at room temperature. SiO2/TiO2 is used to improve the structural stability and roughness of membranes, and dopamine is used as the functional monomer and crosslinker. Importantly, the as-prepared membranes not only exhibited enhanced rebinding capacity (ETMIMs = 30.73 mg g -1 and ESMIMs = 46.04 mg g -1) but also possessed superior rebinding selectivity (2.76 and 2.99 for physcion and 2.42 and 3.30 for aloe emodin onto ETMIMs and ESMIMs) as well as permselectivity (7.59 and 6.69 for physcion and 5.94 and 5.78 for aloe emodin onto ETMIMs and ESMIMs). The regeneration ability of ETMIMs and ESMIMs still maintained 90.4% and 89.2% of the original rebinding capacity after 10 cycling steps, respectively. The ETMIMs and ESMIMs obtained in this work show potential applications for selective separation and purification of emodin from analogs.

The transcription factor PjERF1 enhances the biosynthesis of triterpenoid saponins in Panax japonicus

        Chen Qin,Yu Yilin,Zhang Xiang,Zhao Ren,Zhang Jinyu,Liu Diqiu,Cui Xiuming,Ge Feng 한국식물생명공학회 2021 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.15 No.5

The ERF-type transcription factors (TFs) play vital roles in plant secondary metabolism. ERF TFs simultaneously regulate the expression levels of key enzyme genes involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites due to its “multi-point control” function. In this study, one gene of ERF TFs from Panax japonicus (PjERF1) was cloned. The open reading frame of PjERF1 was 801 bp and encoded 266 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis showed that PjERF1 belonged to ERF subfamily with a typical conserved domain. Subcellular localization found that PjERF1 protein might be located in eukaryotic cell nucleus. Yeast one-hybrid assay demonstrated that PjERF1 could bind to the promoters of PjβAS, PjCAS, and PjSE specifically and regulate the expression levels of such key enzyme genes involved in the triterpene saponins biosynthesis. Therefore, in the PjERF1 overexpression cell lines, the expression levels of some key enzyme genes involved in the triterpenoid saponins biosynthesis were significantly increased compared with those in non-transgenic cell line. As a result of it, the biosynthesis of chikusetsusaponin IV and IVa, and other ginsenosides (Rd, Rb1, Re, and R0) were also promoted in the PjERF1 over- expression cell lines. This study indicated that PjERF1 could regulate the biosynthesis of saponins in P. japonicus through controlling the expression levels of key enzyme genes related to the biosynthesis of triterpenoid saponins.

Biomass-Based Synthesis of Green and Biodegradable Molecularly Imprinted Membranes for Selective Recognition and Separation of Tetracycline

        Wendong Xing,Yilin Wu,Jian Lu,Xinyu Lin,Chao Yu,Zeqing Dong,Yongsheng Yan,Chunxiang Li 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2020 NANO Vol.15 No.02

Aggravating environmental problems have driven the unprecedented development of sustainable materials. Treatments of environmental pollutants with biomass-based sustainable materials are catching attention of more researchers. In the present work, a biomass-based strategy was developed to prepare sustainable molecularly imprinted nanocomposite membranes (S-MINMs). Based on this strategy, biomass-activated carbon nanoparticles (ACNPs) as the porous filler were integrated into the porous cellulose acetate (CA)/chitosan (CS) hybrid membranes to synthesize renewable and easy degradable basal membranes. The specific recognition sites were fabricated from simple free radical polymerization method, and using methacrylic acid (MAA) and acrylamide (Am) as functional monomers, we obtain improved adsorption capacity on tetracycline (TC, template molecule). Performance of S-MINMs was evaluated by adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics, perm-selectivity, reusability and biodegradability. Results indicated that the as-prepared S-MINMs not only exhibited desirable biodegradability, but also possess superior adsorption and separation performance toward TC (15.99 mg g -1 for adsorption capacity and 4.91 for perms-selectivity factor). The method developed here shows great potential for development of sustainable membranes for selective separation of various pollutants.

Chondrogenic Differentiation and Three Dimensional Chondrogenesis of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Induced by Engineered Cartilage-Derived Conditional Media

        Hengyun Sun,Yu Liu,Ting Jiang,Xia Liu,Aijuan He,Jie Li,Wenjie Zhang,Wei Liu,Yilin Cao,Guangdong Zhou 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2014 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.11 No.1

Due to lack of optimal inductive protocols, how to effectively improve chondrogenesis of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) is still a great challenge. Our previous studies demonstrated that the culture media derived from chondrocyte-scaffold constructs (conditional media) contained various soluble chondrogenic factors and were effective for directing chondrogenic differentiation of bone marrow stem cells. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the conditional media can induce ASCs towards chondrogenic differentiation, especially for three-dimensional (3D) cartilage formation in a preshaped scaffold. In this study, it demonstrated that the conditional media derived from chondrocyte-scaffold constructs could promote ASCs to differentiate into chondrocyte-like cells, with similar expression of type II collagen to those induced by chondrogenic growth factors. Moreover, the expression level of chondrocyte-specific genes, such as SOX9, type II collagen, and COMP, was even higher in conditional medium group (CM) than that in optimized chondrogenic growth factor group (GF), indicating that the conditional media can serve as an effective inducer for chondrogenic differentiation of ASCs. Most importantly, the conditional media could also induce ASC-scaffold constructs to form 3D cartilage-like tissue with typical lacunae structures and positive expression of cartilage specific matrices, even higher contents of GAG and type II collagen were achieved in CM group compared to GF group. The current study establishes a simple, but stable, efficient, and economical method for directing 3D cartilage formation of ASCs, a strategy that may be more closely applicable for repairing cartilage defects.
