Good Practices of Ergonomic Science Communication in Japan
Yasuyuki Yamada,Takeshi Ebara,Takashi Toriizuka 대한산업공학회 2022 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.21 No.4
Science communication (SciComm) is a practical activity that maximizes the utility of academic findings, knowledge, and information. This study examined the good practices and future issues of SciComm in the field of ergonomics, in Japan. The first good practice was the establishment of the SciComm Committee in the Japan Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (JES) in 2020. The second was the ErgonomicThon workshop—an ergonomic Ideathon to discuss new ideas regarding the uses of ergonomic findings. The third was the original SciComm program using infographics to promote the use of ergonomic words in social networking service (SNS) communication. The fourth practice was the challenging online fieldwork conducted using the Google Street View. The last practice was the virtual convivial party held at the 62nd conference of JES in 2021. Based on these practices, we suggest the following three future issues of SciComm: (1) promotion of SciComm, beyond times of crisis; (2) development of ergonomic guidelines for SciComm; and, (3) promotion of online SciComm within the information society. This study outlines the importance of sharing good practices and future issues of SciComm that will help spread the movement of the SciComm in the field of ergonomics.

We investigate experimentally the dynamics of Josephson vortices interacting with electromagnetic waves in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y intrinsic Josephson junction stacks by means of millimeter wave irradiation and numerical simulations based on coupled sine-Gordon equations. We have found that an introduction of pancake vortices by tilting the external magnetic field from CuO2 planes reveals Shapiro-step-like features on the flux-flow characteristics. Those steps are assumed to be a manifestation of an in-phase coherent motion of Josephson vortices caused by a periodic potential developed by pancake vortices. The results of the numerical simulation, taking into account the periodic potential, supports the validity of such an assumption.?

Study Design: Retrospective case-control study. Purpose: To evaluate the primary outcomes and radiographic results of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in patients with singlelevel osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) with intravertebral cleft (IVC) to identify the risk factors for cement loosening after PVP. Overview of Literature: PVP is a widely accepted method for managing painful OVF; however, cement loosening occasionally occurs with poor outcomes. Methods: This retrospective study involved 195 patients treated with PVP for single-level OVF with IVC. Six months thereafter, the primary outcomes were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for back pain and the modified Oswestry Disability Index. Computed tomography was conducted to detect cement loosening. Possible risk factors, such as age, sex, wedging angle, intravertebral instability, Parkinson’s disease, spinous process fracture, ankylosing spinal hyperostosis, split vertebrae, and adjacent intervertebral vacuum, were assessed. Results: Forty-nine patients (25%) experienced cement loosening 6 months after PVP. The mean VAS scores were significantly higher in patients with cement loosening than in those without (50 vs. 26 mm, respectively; p <0.01). Cement loosening was closely associated with intravertebral instability (odds ratio [OR], 1.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04–1.40; p =0.015), Parkinson’s disease (OR, 54.31; 95% CI, 4.47–659.53; p =0.002), spinous process fracture (OR, 7.11; 95% CI, 1.65–30.60; p =0.009), and split vertebrae (OR, 11.59; 95% CI, 1.64–82.02; p =0.014). Conclusions: Patients with cement loosening experienced worse back pain than those without cement loosening. The important risk factors that influenced cement loosening after PVP were high intravertebral instability, Parkinson’s disease, spinous process fracture, and split vertebrae.
Effect of Fertilizer with Low Levels of Potassium on Radiocesium-137 Decontamination

Potassium (K) fertilizer closely affects both above-ground biomass production and radiocesium-137 (137Cs) uptake by plants from Cs-contaminated soil. Here we investigated the effects of low levels of K on aboveground biomass, 137Cs concentration, and 137Cs removal ratio (CR) using Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.). Experimental plots fertilized with either 2 g K (20% K) or 6 g K (60% K) per m2 were compared with that with no K fertilization (0% K) under low-, medium-, and high-density planting conditions. As a result, with increasing amounts of K fertilizer, the aboveground biomass of Napier grass tended to increase, and the 137Cs concentration significantly decreased. The greatest CR was observed at the plot fertilized with 20% K and with plants grown under highly dense conditions. CR was positively correlated with biomass in all the experimental plots. Moreover, a positive correlation between CR and 137Cs concentration was found only at low levels of K application (0% and 20% K). In the present study, the application of 20% K produced more aboveground biomass and smaller decreases in 137Cs concentration in Napier grass compared with those with 0% K application; therefore, applying a fertilizer with low levels of K, such as 20% K, is better for 137Cs decontamination than applying 0% or 60% K fertilizer.

Background: Zinc homeostasis is essential for human health and is regulated by several zinc transporters including ZIP and ZnT. ZIP4 is expressed in the small intestine and is important for zinc absorption from the diet. We investigated in the present study the effects of Panax ginseng (P. ginseng) extract on modulating Zip4 expression and cellular zinc levels in mouse Hepa cells. Methods: Hepa cells were transfected with a luciferase reporter plasmid that contains metal-responsive elements, incubated with P. ginseng extract, and luciferase activity was measured. Using 65ZnCl₂, zinc uptake in P. ginseng-treated cells was measured. The expression of Zip4 mRNA and protein in Hepa cells was also investigated. Finally, using a luciferase reporter assay system, the effects of several ginsenosides were monitored. Results: The luciferase activity in cells incubated with P. ginseng extract was significantly higher than that of control cells cultured in normal medium. Hepa cells treated with P. ginseng extract exhibited higher zinc uptake. P. ginseng extract induced Zip4 mRNA expression, which resulted in an enhancement of Zip4 protein expression. Furthermore, some ginsenosides, such as ginsenoside Rc and Re, enhanced luciferase activity driven by intracellular zinc levels. Conclusion: P. ginseng extract induced Zip4 expression at the mRNA and protein level and resulted in higher zinc uptake in Hepa cells. Some ginsenosides facilitated zinc influx. On the basis of these results, we suggest a novel effect of P. ginseng on Zip4-mediated zinc influx, which may provide a new strategy for preventing zinc deficiency.
