Management of Sport Injuries with Korean Medicine: A Survey of Korean National Volleyball Team

<P>The purpose of this study was to report the current state of Korean medicine (KM) treatment on sports injury by implementing survey with volleyball team medical doctors participating in 2013-2014 season. Six KM doctors completed a questionnaire that includes injury parameters: type, location, situation, and pain scores. We collected 166 injury cases from 94 Korean male and female national volleyball players. Knee (25.9%), low back (13.3%), elbow, and ankle (8.4%) injuries were most common. Joint (41.6%) and muscle (30.7%) were major injured tissues. KM team medical doctors utilized acupuncture (40.4%), chuna manual therapy (16.0%), physical therapy (15.2%), taping (9.0%), and cupping (7.8%) to treat volleyball injuries. Any types of medications were used infrequently. Additional physical and exercise therapy were preferred after receiving acupuncture (both 46.9%). This study presented the preliminary injury profile of Korean elite volleyball players. Injury and treatment parameters could be useful to build advanced KM model in sport medicine.</P>

Objectives : Carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) laser, a high power laser has been used for pain management, dermatology, and surgery and laser acupuncture and moxibustion as well, since it had been oscillated in 1964 at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the US. The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of CO<sub>2</sub> laser acupuncture through reviewing studies published in early stage of laser medicine. Methods : To investigate the early history of CO<sub>2</sub> laser acupuncture, studies were searched in the electronic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, Wanfang, J-STAGE, CiNii, KTNP, and OASIS, since 1964. Articles in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean were included, and there were no limitations in literature types such as reviews, essays, clinical trials, animal experiments and veterinary research. Results : We found that the first CO<sub>2</sub> laser application to acupoints was done by a research team in Shanghai in 1976. They used CO<sub>2</sub> laser for acupuncture treatment and it was also the first laser acupuncture treatment in China. Since the first case report of CO<sub>2</sub> laser for leukopenia, it has been applied to various diseases in China, Korea, Japan and other western countries. It has been widely applied in the fields of dentistry and veterinary medicine, as well as clinical applications. Conclusions : Not only CO<sub>2</sub> laser can be used as laser acupuncture by stimulating the acupoints and meridians, but also can produce moxibustion effect by using heat stimulus. Therefore, it is expected that it will be used in various clinical fields in the future.

Background: Adhesive capsulitis is a progressive, idiopathic disorder that significantly impacts individuals̓ daily lives and increases their medical burden. Pharmacopuncture therapy, which combines acupuncture techniques with herbal medicine, involves injecting herbal extracts into specific acupoints. This study aims to determine the effectiveness and safety of pharmacopuncture therapy in comparison to physiotherapy (PT) for treating adhesive capsulitis. Methods: This research protocol outlines a two-arm, parallel, multi-center, pragmatic randomized controlled trial. Fifty participants will be randomly allocated to either the pharmacopuncture therapy or PT group, and they will receive 12 sessions of their respective therapies over a 6-week period. The primary outcome measure is the numeric rating scale for shoulder pain. Secondary outcomes include the visual analog scale score for shoulder pain, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, Patients̓ Global Impression of Change score, Short Form-12 Health Survey Version 2 score, and EuroQol-5 Dimension. Statistical analysis will be conducted based on the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: This trial may offer high-quality and reliable clinical evidence for evaluating the effectiveness and safety of pharmacopuncture therapy compared to PT in the treatment of adhesive capsulitis. Furthermore, this study will serve as a valuable guideline for practitioners when making clinical decisions and managing adhesive capsulitis.

While carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy affecting the wrist, resulting in substantial physical, psychological, and economic effects, there is no gold standard therapy for CTS. In this case series study, we aimed to report CTS patients treated with Carthami Semen Pharmacopuncture (CSP) and electroacupuncture (EA) showing improvements in their symptoms, and the combinatorial effects of CSP and EA. We collected medical records of CTS outpatients who received CSP and EA at Chuku Acupuncture & Moxibustion Korean Medicine Clinic from August 2017 to September 2018. The outcome measures were the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, paresthesia, the Korean version of the Boston carpal tunnel questionnaire (K-BCTQ) score, and changes in nocturnal pain, Tinel sign, and Phalen’s test. We included patient satisfaction at the completion of all treatments. 17 patients were included for this case series study. After treatment, VAS for pain decreased significantly from 50.41 ± 16.19 to 9.59 ± 9.46, VAS for paresthesia also decreased significantly from 63.50 ± 11.49 to 14.75 ± 12.97, and KBCTQ symptom severity scale decreased from 2.48 ± 0.68 to 1.89 ± 0.70 (all p < 0.001). Nocturnal pain, Tinel signs, and Phalen’s test showed improvements after all the treatments. All the patients reported favorable overall satisfaction with the treatments, and 69.23% wanted future pharmacopuncture treatments if CTS recurred. No complications were detected. The combination of CSP and EA could be an effective and safe option in treating CTS.
