An Analysis of Equalizing EffectsO of Different Interactional Contexts: From the Social Constructivist Perspective

        Kyungsun Han 팬코리아영어교육학회(구 영남영어교육학회) 2004 영어교육연구 Vol.16 No.2

This study examined the equalizing effects of three different language learning contexts and also, interactive relationships between ESL students of different styles in discussions' learning experiences and situated contexts from the social constructivist perspective, Data were collected from an advanced writing class in USA using both quantitative and qualitative methods, The results then showed an establishing link with the equalizing effects of computer discussions on the English language quality in tandem with quantitative language production. Quantitative and ualitative analyses further indicated interactive relationships between students' learning experiences and situated contexts. Specifically. students in High Increase perceived higher efficacy in computer discussions. and could develop confidence to participate more actively in class, while the Medium Increase group was more confident and active in oral discussions. The Decrease group, on the other hand. tended to be off class topics when engaged in computer discussions. These students perceived their strengths and weaknesses in English language learning in reference to different contextual characteristics. Therefore. language educators must decide what kinds of instructional tasks would be the most appropriate one to achieve certain goals by understanding students' interactive dynamics with different learning contexts.

        Asynchronicity and English Language Learning

Kyungsun Han 한국응용언어학회 2006 응용 언어학 Vol.22 No.2

This study postulated that email discussions have pedagogically beneficial capacity for EFL instruction in part because of its asynchronicity. Under the assumption, the study attempted to trace whether the medium could improve students’ perceived self-efficacy and how the effects related to discussion contextual features. To investigate these issues, data were collected using a questionnaire pertaining to willingness to communicate, and perceived self-efficacy and language anxiety by asking the questionnaire to EFL students participated from two sections of English language course at a national university of education. Over the period, the students were also asked to write about their discussion participation experiences in journals. The findings showed that the students could develop a greater self-efficacy in the context of the email discussions. The asynchronicity of the email discussions seemed to help compensate the EFL students’ lack of flexibility and fluency in the English language so as to undertake the discussion tasks. In particular, the extended processing time and the accessibility to various English language related resources provided by the asynchronous nature emerged as critical factors involved in the students’ mastery experiences, which lead to the improved students’ perceptions of self-efficacy for learning the English language.

Exploring ESL Students' Emotional Learning Experiences in Different Interactive Contexts

        Han, Kyungsun 한국영어교육학회 2004 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.59 No.4

The present study investigated ESL students’ perceived efficacy and language anxiety in different discussion contexts. The purpose of the study was to examine how computer and oral discussions could relate to each other, and how students’ different cultural backgrounds could interact with the contextual characteristics of the two discussions. Data were collected using quantitative methods for self-efficacy and language anxiety measures, and qualitative methods of interviews and class observation from advanced academic ESL writing classes in USA. First, the results of quantitative analyses suggested that the oral discussion session that was occurring in tandem with computer discussions could help boost students’ self-efficacy for English language learning more than did the oral discussion session that was not accompanied by the computer discussions. According to the qualitative analysis, on the other hand, students’ cultural backgrounds seemed to be related with what they perceived in terms of self-efficacy and anxiety, and how the perceptions were established. Furthermore, these perceptions seemed to interplay with different contextual features resulting in individuals’ variable perceptions in the two discussions.

Beneficial effect of Gyejibokryeong-hwan on climacteric syndrome with blood stasis pattern: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical pilot trial

        Kyungsun Han,Jeong-Eun Yoo,Jung-Eun Kim,Ohjin Kwon,Ae-Ran Kim,Hyo-ju Park,So-Young Jung,Mikyung Kim,Changsop Yang,Jung-Hyo Cho,Jun-Hwan Lee 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.2

Background: Gyejibokryeong-hwan (GBH), a herbal mixture that is widely used for climacteric syndrome, is studied for its efficacy; however, no study evaluated the GBH indication, which is a blood-stasis pattern based on traditional Chinese medicine theory. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical pilot trial. Fifty subjects with climacteric syndrome were recruited and randomly assigned to GBH group or placebo group. Subjects were administered GBH or placebo granules for 4 weeks followed by 4 weeks of observation period. For the primary outcome, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) was evaluated. For the secondary outcomes, quality of life, degrees of abdominal resistance and tenderness, blood-stasis pattern questionnaire and degree of upward movement of Qi were evaluated. Results: After 4-week intervention, the mean change of total MRS score significantly decreased in the GBH group compared to the placebo group (p = 0.037). The quality of life related to physical health (p = 0.008) and blood-stasis pattern (p = 0.018) significantly improved in the GBH group but not in the placebo group. Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence of the feasibility of recruiting subjects with GBH indications and show that GBH may have clinical efficacy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, especially urogenital symptoms, without any significant adverse events. Trial registration: This trial was registered at Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS identifier: KCT0002040).

Objectives This systematic review is to support the effectiveness of herbal medicine for the treatment of simple obesity in adults. Methods A total of 8 electronic databases were searched in English, Chinese and Korean. Standard methodologies for the systematic review were used to search, analyze and synthesize data based on NECA’s guideline for undertaking systematic review and meta-analyses for intervention. Results After screening 1781 potential articles, we identified 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We conducted a meta-analysis for the study using Bangpungtongsung-san and Taeeumjowi-tang to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicines on weight loss compared to placebo control. Both herbs showed positive effect in weight, body mass index and waist circumference. In an analysis comparing herbal effects considering constitutions showed that proper treatment can lower adverse events. Conclusions Our results provide evidence that herbal medicine can be an effective treatment for the obesity compare to placebo or to conventional medicine without serious adverse events. Further study is needed to evaluate effectiveness of herbal medicines considering personalized treatment and its safety. (J Korean Med Rehabil 2016;26(4):23-35)

L2 Learning Motivation1) in Technology Enhanced Instruction: A Survey from Three Perspectives

        한경선(Kyungsun Han) 한국영어어문교육학회 2005 영어어문교육 Vol.11 No.1

The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which CALL apply to enhance the motivational aspects of second language learning. Theories relevant to social, cognitive, and affective foundations of motivation are first reviewed to demonstrate the important role of motivational influences in improving learners' affect and achievements. Then, implications arising from such theories in strengthening the motivational aspects of CALL are explicated in the second part. With the spread of computer technology in language classrooms, the innovative role of CALL in the development and maintenance of intrinsic motivation can be illustrated. Specifically, CALL may provide cognitively supportive instruction geared towards improving students' performance. Also, it has been reported from the affective perspective that CALL can captivate learners' attention, promote their feelings and expectations of success, improve perceptions of control, and increase positive attributions to effort and ability. Finally, from a social learning perspective, CALL may enhance learners' self-efficacy and foster their achievement and positive affect through social interactions, proximal goal-setting, and attributional feedback. In the framework of CALL, students seem to be benefited by the immediacy and authenticity of contact with target languages and cultures made at their choices and decisions.

Interactive Language Use and Emotional Aspects of Using Computers for Class Discussions

        한경선(Kyungsun Han) 한국외국어교육학회 2004 Foreign languages education Vol.11 No.2

This study examined what the effects of computer discussions on interactive English language use of students who were considered reticent in class, and their perceptions of self-efficacy and language anxiety, and how different individual types of students would interact with the different contexts of oral and computer discussions. Data were collected using quantitative methods for discussion data and self-efficacy and language anxiety measures, and qualitative methods for interview and class observation from an advanced ESL writing class. The results indicated that the computer discussions seemed to help reticent students enhance their quantitative productivity in discussions, but it did not necessarily elicit more sophisticated and complex English language from these students. The analyses for students’ self-efficacy and anxiety measures further suggested that the computer discussions could contribute to lowering students’ language anxiety but not to improvement of their self-efficacy. In addition, the qualitative analysis illustrated that the students of one participant group would establish different emotional experience from those of the other group in the oral discussions. Then, the experiences of these students seemed to be created differently within the novel context of computer discussions.
