        Relationships between Islet-Specific Autoantibody Titers and the Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

        Background: Dysimmunity plays a key role in diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes mellitus. Islet-specific autoantibodies (ISAs) have been used as diagnostic markers for different phenotypic classifications of diabetes. This study was aimed to explore the relationships between ISA titers and the clinical characteristics of diabetic patients. Methods: A total of 509 diabetic patients admitted to Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University were recruited. Anthropometric parameters, serum biochemical index, glycosylated hemoglobin, urinary microalbumin/creatinine ratio, ISAs, fat mass, and islet β-cell function were measured. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify relationships between ISA titers and clinical characteristics. Results: Compared with autoantibody negative group, blood pressure, weight, total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), visceral fat mass, fasting C-peptide (FCP), 120 minutes C-peptide (120minCP) and area under C-peptide curve (AUCCP) of patients in either autoantibody positive or glutamate decarboxylase antibody (GADA) positive group were lower. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, triglycerides (TGs), body fat mass of patients in either autoantibody positive group were lower than autoantibody negative group. GADA titer negatively correlated with TC, LDL-C, FCP, 120minCP, and AUCCP. The islet cell antibody and insulin autoantibody titers both negatively correlated with body weight, BMI, TC, TG, and LDL-C. After adjusting confounders, multiple linear regression analysis showed that LDL-C and FCP negatively correlated with GADA titer. Conclusion: Diabetic patients with a high ISA titer, especially GADA titer, have worse islet β-cell function, but less abdominal obesity and fewer features of the metabolic syndrome.

        Cytospora elaeagnicola sp. nov. Associated with Narrow-leaved Oleaster Canker Disease in China

        Cytospora is a genus including important phytopathogens causing severe dieback and canker diseases distributed worldwide with a wide host range. However, identification of Cytospora species is difficult since the currently available DNA sequence data are insufficient. Aside the limited availability of ex-type sequence data, most of the genetic work is only based on the ITS region DNA marker which lacks the resolution to delineate to the species level in Cytospora. In this study, three fresh strains were isolated from the symptomatic branches of Elaeagnus angustifolia in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Morphological observation and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, ACT and RPB2) support these specimens are best accommodated as a distinct novel species of Cytospora. Cytospora elaeagnicola sp. nov. is introduced, having discoid, nearly flat, pycnidial conidiomata with hyaline, allantoid conidia, and differs from its relatives genetically and by host association.

        N-doped porous carbon encapsulated MnFe2O4 nanoparticles as advanced anodes for Li-ion batteries

        Transition metal oxide MnFe 2 O 4 is considered a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries owing to its high theoreticalspecifi c capacity. However, this material has two bottleneck problems, i.e., poor conductivity and serious volume expansionduring cycling. In this work, MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully encapsulated in the matrix of N-doped porouscarbon via a sol–gel method. As a result, the N-doped carbon matrix enhances the electronic conductivity of the composites. The special porous structure increases the contact area between the electrode material and the electrolyte and facilitates therapid infi ltration of the electrolyte. At a calcination temperature of 400 °C, the MnFe 2 O 4 /C composite shows a high initialdischarge specifi c capacity of 1207.0 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 and retains a reversible specifi c capacity of 1100.1 mAh g −1after 200 cycles. The simple design of metal oxide nanomaterials encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon provides a newdirection for improving the electrochemical performance of electrode materials for Li-ion batteries.

        A Novel Cross-Layer Dynamic Integrated Priority-Computing Scheme for 3G+ Systems

        As Internet protocol and wireless communications have developed, the number of different types of mobile services has increased gradually. Existing priority-computing schemes cannot satisfy the dynamic requirements of supporting multiple services in future wireless communication systems, because the currently used factors, mainly user priority, are relatively simple and lack relevancy. To solve this problem and provide the desired complexity,dynamic behavior, and fairness features of 3G and beyond 3G mobile communication systems, this paper proposes a novel crosslayer dynamic integrated priority-computing scheme that computes the priority based on a variety of factors, including quality of service requirements, subscriber call types, waiting time, movement mode, and traffic load from the corresponding layers. It is observed from simulation results that the proposed dynamic integrated priority scheme provides enhanced performance.

        Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 4 in Patients with and without Diabetic Retinopathy

        Background: Fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) has been demonstrated to be a predictor of early diabetic nephropathy. However, little is known about the relationship between FABP4 and diabetic retinopathy (DR). This study explored the value of FABP4 as a biomarker of DR in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: A total of 238 subjects were enrolled, including 20 healthy controls and 218 T2DM patients. Serum FABP4 levels were measured using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The grade of DR was determined using fundus fluorescence angiography. Based on the international classification of DR, all T2DM patients were classified into the following three subgroups: non-DR group, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) group, and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) group. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to assess the correlation between FABP4 levels and DR severity.Results: FABP4 correlated positively with DR severity (<i>r</i>=0.225, <i>P</i>=0.001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to assess the diagnostic potential of FABP4 in identifying DR, with an area under the curve of 0.624 (37% sensitivity, 83.6% specificity) and an optimum cut-off value of 76.4 μg/L. Multivariate logistic regression model including FABP4 as a categorized binary variable using the cut-off value of 76.4 μg/L showed that the concentration of FABP4 above the cut-off value increased the risk of NPDR (odds ratio [OR], 3.231; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.574 to 6.632; <i>P</i>=0.001) and PDR (OR, 3.689; 95% CI, 1.306 to 10.424; <i>P</i>=0.014).Conclusion: FABP4 may be used as a serum biomarker for the diagnosis of DR.

      • Chemical processing of water-soluble species and formation of secondary organic aerosol in fogs

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A field study on fog chemistry and aqueous-phase processing of aerosol particles was conducted in Fresno, California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) during wintertime. Fog droplets were collected while interstitial submicron aerosol was characterized in real time using a High Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-AMS). The fog samples were later analyzed using HR-AMS, ion chromatography (IC), and total organic carbon analyzer (TOC). Compared to interstitial aerosol, dissolved solutes in fog waters were composed of higher fractions of ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, methanesulfonic acid, and oxygenated organic compounds, likely due to aqueous formation of secondary species as well as enhanced gas-to-particle partitioning of water-soluble gases under humid conditions. The low-volatility dissolved organic matter in fog water (F-OA) was moderately oxidized with an average oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio of 0.42. The chemical composition of F-OA appeared to be overall similar to that of oxygenated organic component in interstitial aerosol (OOA) and the HR-AMS mass spectra of F-OA and OOA are highly similar (r<SUP>2</SUP> > 0.95). However, there are also significant chemical differences as F-OA appeared to contain a larger fraction of carboxylic functional groups than OOA, indicating enhanced organic acid formation through aqueous-phase reactions. In addition, F-OA was composed of substantially more nitrogen-containing compounds, with an average N/C ratio ∼4 times that of OOA. Most strikingly was that the F-OA spectra showed substantial enhancements of the C<SUB>x</SUB>H<SUB>y</SUB>N<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> (x ≥ 0; y ≥ 0) ions, which were likely contributed by imidazole- and/or pyrazine-based compounds formed from the aqueous reactions of aldehydes with amino compounds. The results of this study demonstrated that aqueous reactions in atmospheric droplets can significantly modify aerosol composition and contribute to the formation of oxygenated and nitrogen-containing organic compounds in atmospheric aerosol particles. This finding is important for understanding aerosol's effects on human health, air quality, and climate.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> HR-AMS study of fog processing of PM1 in San Joaquin Valley of CA during winter. </LI> <LI> Fog waters are enriched of secondary inorganic and organic aerosol species. </LI> <LI> Organic residuals in fog waters (FOM) is moderately oxidized (average O/C = 0.42). </LI> <LI> FOM has more abundant carboxylic acid and organic nitrogen compounds than OOA. </LI> <LI> This is evidence for forming imidazole- or pyrazine-based compounds in fog waters. </LI> </UL> </P>
