<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Direct carboxylation of acetylene with CO<SUB>2</SUB> was carried out in the presence of 1,5,7‐triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec‐1‐ene (TBD); subsequent reduction of dicarboxylated acetylene produces commercially valuable succinate salts. This metal‐free carboxylation has potential economic and environmental impact by utilizing non‐petroleum feedstocks (acetylene) and CO<SUB>2</SUB> and by producing valuable chemical feed stocks.</P>
Two New Phenolic Compounds from <i>Artemisia iwayomogi</i>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Two new phenolic compounds, (<I>Z</I>)‐5′‐hydroxyjasmone 5′‐<I>O</I>‐{6″‐<I>O</I>‐[(<I>E</I>)‐caffeoyl]‐<I>β</I>‐<SMALL>D</SMALL>‐glucopyranoside} (<B>1</B>) and quercetin‐7‐<I>O</I>‐<I>β</I>‐<SMALL>D</SMALL>‐glucuronide methyl ester (<B>2</B>), along with ten known phenolic compounds, <B>3</B>–<B>12</B>, were isolated from the aerial parts of <I>Artemisia iwayomogi.</I> Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR, and HR‐ESI‐TOF‐MS techniques. The inhibitory effects of compounds <B>1</B>–<B>12</B> on the LPS‐stimulated production of IL‐12 p40, IL‐6, and TNF‐<I>α</I> in bone marrow‐derived dendritic cells were evaluated.</P>

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Ornithine lipids (OLs) are bacteria‐specific lipids that are found in the outer membrane of Gram (−) bacteria and increase as surrogates of phospholipids under phosphate‐limited environmental conditions. We investigated the effects of OL increase in bacterial membranes on pathogen virulence and the host immune response. In <I>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</I>, we increased OL levels in membranes by overexpressing the OL‐synthesizing operon (<I>olsBA</I>). These increases changed the bacterial surface charge and hydrophobicity, which reduced bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), interfered with the binding of macrophages to bacterial cells and enhanced bacterial biofilm formation. When grown under low phosphate conditions, <I>P. aeruginosa</I> became more persistent in the treatment of antibiotics and AMPs in an <I>olsBA</I>‐dependent manner. While OLs increased persistence, they attenuated <I>P. aeruginosa</I> virulence; in host cells, they reduced the production of inflammatory factors (iNOS, COX‐2, PGE<SUB>2</SUB> and nitric oxide) and increased intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> release. Exogenously added OL had similar effects on <I>P. aeruginosa</I> and host cells. Our results suggest that bacterial OL plays important roles in bacteria‐host interaction in a way that enhances bacterial persistence and develops chronic adaptation to infection.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A versatile carbene‐catalysed oxidation protocol involving N‐heterocyclic carbene catalysts and 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine <I>N</I>‐oxyl (TEMPO) is described for the synthesis of esters, cinnamic acids, and thioesters. A wide range of esters, thioesters, and cinnamic acids were obtained by metal‐free coupling of aldehydes with aliphatic, allylic and aromatic alcohols, benzyl mercaptan, and water. In addition to the oxidative coupling of aldehydes with nucleophiles, dehydrogenation of saturated aldehydes and oxidation of allylic alcohols were found under our oxidative coupling conditions. Unlike other TEMPO‐mediated oxidative esterification reactions, this reaction does not proceed through a TEMPO ester intermediate to form esters and thioesters.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Copper‐catalyzed, one‐pot, three‐component coupling reactions using thiols, alcohols, and oxygen to form a variety of esters in good yields were studied. In the presence of easily oxidized benzylic and allylic alcohols, thiols were selectively oxidized to form thionoesters, which underwent facile S/O exchange to afford esters. Thiols may be used as an alternative benzoyl source under mild aerobic conditions.</P>

<P>A mononuclear nonheme iron(IV)-amido complex bearing a tetraamido macrocyclic ligand, [(TAML)Fe<SUP>IV</SUP>(NHTs)]<SUP>−</SUP> (<B>1</B>), was synthesized via a hydrogen atom (H atom) abstraction reaction of an iron(V)-imido complex, [(TAML)Fe<SUP>V</SUP>(NTs)]<SUP>−</SUP> (<B>2</B>), and fully characterized using various spectroscopies. We then investigated (1) the p<I>K</I><SUB>a</SUB> of <B>1</B>, (2) the reaction of <B>1</B> with a carbon-centered radical, and (3) the H atom abstraction reaction of <B>1</B>. To the best of our knowledge, the present study reports for the first time the synthesis and chemical properties/reactions of a high-valent iron(IV)-amido complex.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Properties of ultra-thin films are dierent from their single crystal counterparts due to the presence of (substrate induced)strain,dierent degree and type of (growth induced)disorderand dierent averagedoping (distribution of oxygen vacancies, for example).! 1 unit cell (UC)) superconducting oxide lms grown by laser ablation.Systematic studies show that BSCCO-2212, 2201, 2223, and LSCO-214 exhibit conductor-like Fermi edge, whereas materialscontaining ‘‘chains’’ (like YBCO-123) are prone to very rapid surface degradation, possibly related to critical oxygen loss at theoutermost layers. Combined with X-ray analysis we have determined that BSCCO-2212 lms undergo a structural phase transitionat a nominal thickness of approximately 1 UC, converting the precursor Bi2O2:33 highly coherent ultra-thin lm into the Bi-2212214 thin lms (withTc of up to 44 K) are also discussed. For the rst time the dispersion in ARPES spectra measured on such in situgrown strained LSCO lm is shown. Pump-probe spectroscopy has been used to study quasiparticle dynamics in a superconducting Nb<SUB>0.5</SUB>Ti<SUB>0.5</SUB>N thin film subject to a parallel magnetic field. The broadband, time-resolved, photo-induced far-infrared transmission S(t) was measured and used to extract a time-dependent effective recombination rate τ<SUB>eff</SUB><SUP>-1</SUP>(t). We found that τ<SUB>eff</SUB><SUP>-1</SUP>(t) decreases with increasing field. The rate τ<SUB>eff</SUB><SUP>-1</SUP>(t) is found to scale with S(t) at high laser fluence.
SHM-based probabilistic representation of wind properties: Bayesian inference and model optimization

The estimated probabilistic model of wind data based on the conventional approach may have high discrepancy compared with the true distribution because of the uncertainty caused by the instrument error and limited monitoring data. A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm-based finite mixture modeling method has been developed in the companion paper and is conducted to formulate the joint probability density function (PDF) of wind speed and direction using the wind monitoring data of the investigated bridge. The established bivariate model of wind speed and direction only represents the features of available wind monitoring data. To characterize the stochastic properties of the wind parameters with the subsequent wind monitoring data, in this study, Bayesian inference approach considering the uncertainty is proposed to update the wind parameters in the bivariate probabilistic model. The slice sampling algorithm of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is applied to establish the multi-dimensional and complex posterior distribution which is analytically intractable. The numerical simulation examples for univariate and bivariate models are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, the proposed Bayesian inference approach is used to update and optimize the parameters in the bivariate model using the wind monitoring data from the investigated bridge. The results indicate that the proposed Bayesian inference approach is feasible and can be employed to predict the bivariate distribution of wind speed and direction with limited monitoring data.
Structural performance monitoring of an urban footbridge

This paper presents the structural performance monitoring of an urban footbridge located in Hangzhou, China. The structural health monitoring (SHM) system is designed and implemented for the footbridge to monitor the structural responses of the footbridge and to ensure the structural safety during the period of operation. The monitoring data of stress and displacement measured by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors installed at the critical locations are used to analyze and assess the operation performance of the footbridge. A linear regression method is applied to separate the temperature effect from the stress monitoring data measured by the FBG-based strain sensors. In addition, the static vertical displacement of the footbridge measured by the FBG-based hydrostatic level gauges are presented and compared with the dynamic displacement remotely measured by a machine vision-based measurement system. Based on the examination of the monitored stress and displacement data, the structural safety evaluation is executed in combination with the defined condition index.
