        International tourists’ destination choice differences according to Plog’s personality types: analyzing the case of Mongolia based on the recreation opportunity spectrum

        In the international tourism market, the number of arrivals in Asian regions is increasing every year, and that of foreign tourists in Mongolia, a new tourism market, is also rapidly rising. This study tests differences in the destination choice among international tourists visiting Mongolia using the Plog’s personality model. It classifies Mongolia into several regions using the recreation opportunity spectrum and then tests whether Plog’s personality types significantly affect the destination choice. Analytical results based on the data of an on-site survey of 406 U.S., South Korean, and Russian tourists recruited at eleven representative destinations present that while the tourists are categorized into psychocentric, midcentric, and allocentric types, allocentric tourists are the largest in number. Also, Plog’s personality types are found to differentiate tourist destination choices when socio-demographic and travel-related confounding variables are controlled for. Allocentric tourists are likely to visit primitive areas, whereas psychocentrics tend to visit urban tourist attractions. Accordingly, this study confirms the validity of the recreation opportunity spectrum and Plog’s personality types, using the case of Mongolia with unique natural, urban, and tourism settings. Also, tourism service providers and marketers may benefit from the segmentation technique and analytical results suggested in this study in order to assess the needs of their visitors.

        Comparison of Research Topics on Transportation Decarbonization Between Asian and Non-Asian Regions: Using Topic Modeling and Machine Learning Algorithms

        The growing global interest to decarbonize the transportation industry has resulted in numerous scientific publications. This study reviews the rapidly expanding body of research and identifies the knowledge gaps in transport decarbonization between regions. This study employs a hybrid approach combining topic modeling and machine learning to identify research topics and their knowledge structures, and then compares the main debated topics between Asia and non-Asian regions. A dataset of 777 articles, including 410 Asian and 367 non-Asian articles, published between 1990 and 2022 was extracted from the Scopus database. The latent Dirichlet allocation topic modeling results showed that five potential topics were derived from Asia, while six were derived from non-Asian regions, and the knowledge structure of each topic differed between the two regions. The K-nearest neighbor machine learning algorithm results indicated a 92% accuracy for Asian topics and an 89% accuracy for non-Asian topics. The findings suggest that the Asian studies focused on “energy use in transportation” and “drivers of CO2 emissions in transportation,” while the non-Asian studies focused on “electric vehicles” and “fuel consumption.” This paper will keep academics and practitioners updated on the paradigm shift in the research on transportation decarbonization.

        An Alternative Discourse on the Shrinking City : Through the Lens of the Smart City

        The attention on shrinking cities has recently shifted from analyzing the causes of urban shrinkage to its context and dynamics. Hence, demand is currently increasing for strategic alternatives to the transition towards a sustainable urban system in shrinking cities. Using optimized measures based on information and communication technologies, smart city approaches are being considered as a solution for overcoming the limitations of current policy responses to shrinking cities, and for transforming their urban systems in a sustainable way. However, studies on a comprehensive analysis of varied contexts and types of smart city approaches to urban shrinkage are few, as previous studies have focused on identifying smart city strategies in only specific cases of shrinking cities. Thus, this study analyzes the main topics and structural features of smart city discourses as an alternative to a shrinking city, through a network analysis of 264 literature samples (119 journal articles, 111 conference papers, and 34 books) that discuss smart city approaches in terms of urban shrinkage. The main topics fall into five clusters: (1) urban system, (2) innovation, (3) infrastructure, (4) environment, and (5) big data, with the systematic elements (urban system, innovation, and big data) having a higher number of nodes and link strength than the physical ones (infrastructure and environment).

        A Review of the Survey Method of the Korean National Household Travel Survey: Focusing on the Comparison of International Cases

        The increasing use of various types of data to capture travel behavior relatively discredits the utility of traditional national-scale household travel surveys. However, the surveys are still arguably meaningful in their clarification of purposes and means of travel. Accordingly, this study reviews travel survey cases and related literature, to identify the status of the Korean National Household Travel Survey (KNHTS). It discusses improving the KNHTS's survey method, focusing on its long investigation cycle, short survey period, reduction in sample size, and questionnaire format biased toward mandatory travel. To address these issues, this study suggests reducing the survey cycle, conducting a year-round survey, combining weekday and weekend surveys, and specifying items on nonmandatory travel. These practical suggestions duly consider the validity and reliability of the KNHTS within budget constraints and its applicability to related fields, such as tourism, public health, and sociology.

        노마드적Nomadic 가치관이 지속가능성에 주는 함의

        역사적으로 이 땅에 발 딛고 살아가는 인류에게 지속가능성의 개념은 다양한 형태로 존재해왔다. 하지만 오늘날 전 세계적으로 발생하고 있는 생태·사회적 위기를 되돌아볼 때, 국가발전 규범으로서의 현세대 지속가능성의 개념을 보다 명확히 체계화하여 지속가능한 미래를 위한 이념적 기틀 마련이 시급히 요구되는 상황이라고 할 수 있다. 지속가능성의 개념적 모호성의 원인은 지속가능성의 세계관과 실천적 규범을 매개하는 공동의 가치관의 부재로 정의되며, 따라서 역사적으로 나타났던 지속가능한 가치관의 선례들을 검토하여 현세대의, 더 나아가 미래세대의 지속가능성 개념을 보완하는 것은 유의미한 접근이라고 할 수 있다. 인류는 수백 만 년 동안의 대부분의 존속 기간을 소규모 집단을 이루어 끊임없이 이동하는 삶의 방식을 지속하였다. 유목은 인간이 환경으로부터 지속가능한 방식으로 의식주에 필요한 자원을 얻을 수 있었던 생활양식의 선례로서, 자연과 인간 사회의 관계성을 재조명하는 측면에서 오늘날 지속가능성에 중요한 함의를 갖는다. 본 연구에서 유목과 정착의 특징 비교를 통해 살펴본 노마드적 가치관의 주요 개념은 ‘소유와 풍요’, ‘자연과 문명’, ‘평등’으로, 지속가능성 논의에서 대표적으로 수용되고 있는 TBL(Triple Bottom Line) 개념의 경제적, 환경적, 사회적 차원에서 노마드적 가치관이 현대사회의 지속가능성에 갖는 비평적 함의를 제시하고자 한다. Historically the concept of sustainability has existed in a variety of forms in civilization. However, it is urgently required to formulate a conceptual framework for a sustainable future by clearly organizing the current concept of sustainability as a national development standard in consideration of the ecological and social crisis all over the world today. The cause of the conceptual ambiguity of sustainability can be defined as the lack of common values that mediate the worldview and action standard of sustainability, and therefore, it would be a meaningful approach to supplement the concept of sustainability for both the present generation and future generation by extracting the conceptual meaning of sustainable values that has appeared historically through civilization. Mankind had lived in a small group, constantly moving, for the most part of the millions of years. Nomadism is an example of lifestyle where human beings had been able to obtain the necessary resources for food and shelter in a sustainable way from the environment and it has an important implication for sustainability in terms of a relationship between nature and human society. In this study, the main concepts of nomadic values that were examined by comparing the characteristics of nomadism and settlement are "possession and richness", "nature and civilization" and "equality". This paper attempts to present the critical implications of the Nomadic values on the sustainability of modern society at the economic, environmental and social levels.

        장래 자동차 주말통행 예측 - 서울시 통행량 및 통행시간을 중심으로

        Korea has faced population structure change due to persistent fertility reduction and population aging and its driving environment has also been altering because of car sharing among others. How such changes would influence travel behavior is increasingly attracting academic interest. Meanwhile, leisure travel is particularly important in Korea as the 5-day and/or 52-hour workweek system allows for more time invested in personal leisure activities. Although numerous predictive studies exist on weekday travel with regard to future travel behavior and social changes, those on weekend trips are few. This study therefore looks into changes in automobile trip generation and travel time with a case of Seoul, based on scenarios that reflect the characteristics of weekend trips. Future changes are categorized into three dimensions: population structure, perception on automobile ownership, and technology. The largest influences are observed between the total trip generation volume and automobile ownership as well as the total travel time and population structure. The implications of the scenario analysis are that alternative regional transportation is desirable to reduce long-distance automobile trips and public policies to encourage the use of short-distance modes by facilitating the sharing economy. It is also recommended that local governments develop strategies to respond to each of the scenarios such as a lower automobile dependency in line with the population aging and a larger travel volume with an increasing job demand. 최근 저출산과 고령화로 인한 인구구조의 전환과 카셰어링 등장에 따른 주행환경의 변화가 통행행태에 미치는 영 향에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 특히 주5일 및 주52시간 근무제의 영향으로 여가시간이 증가하면서 여가통행에 대한 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 개인의 통행행태와 미래사회의 변화를 고려하여 장래 통행수요를 예측하는 연구가 다수 존재하지만, 대부분 주중통행을 연구하는 데 그치고 있으며 주말통행에 관한 연구는 부족하다. 이에 본 연 구는 주말통행의 특성을 고려하여 미래사회 변화 시나리오에 따른 서울시 주말 자동차 통행발생량 및 통행시간의 변화 를 살펴보았다. 장래 변화는 크게 인구구조, 차량보유인식, 그리고 기술발전으로 구분하였다. 분석 결과 총통행량에서는 자동차, 총통행시간에서는 인구구조의 변화가 크게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 장기적으로 장거리 통행에 있 어 자동차 사용을 줄이기 위해 광역교통을 확충하고 공유경제를 활성화하여 단·중거리 수단 이용률을 높이는 정책이 적 절하다. 지방정부는 그밖에도 고령화에 따른 자동차 의존도 감소와 취업수요 증가에 따른 자동차 통행 증가와 같이 각 시나리오에 따른 대응 정책을 수립하는 것이 바람직하다.

        가산자료 모형을 활용한 서울시 주말 자동차 통행 특성 분석

        Despite the increasing importance of weekend trips, only a few studies exist on their characteristics. Predictive studies on future weekend trips are particularly lacking. With focus on automobile trip generation, this study analyzes the characteristics of weekend trips and develops a model to predict the future traffic volume in Seoul, Korea. Poisson distribution models find that population density and automobile ownership density increase trip generation on weekends. The finding that these two density variables have opposite effects may imply how household size and household income affect automobile trip generation. Among built environment variables, household density, subway availability (in the 1km buffered area of a neighborhood), bus availability (in the 500m area) and road connectivity (in the 1km area) turn out to reduce automobile trip generation. According to a prediction accuracy test, the size of error of the zero-inflated negative binomial model is 2.47%, suggesting a substantially high accuracy of the model. 주말통행 중요성이 점차 확대되고 있음에도 불구하고 아직 그 특성을 파악하기 위한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 더불어 장래 주말통행량을 예측하고자 하는 노력은 거의 전무하다. 본 연구는 서울을 대상으로 주말통행의 특성을 밝히고 동시에 장래 주말통행량을 예측하기 위한 모형을 자동차 통행 발생량을 중심으로 개발한다. 포아송 분포 모형을 사용하여 분석한 결과, 인구밀도와 자동차밀도가 주말의 자동차 통행발생량을 증가시키는 것으로 나타난다. 인구밀도와 가구밀도는 서로 정반대의 효과를 주는 것으로 드러났는데, 이를 통해 가구크기와 가구의 경제수준이 자동차 통행에 미치는 영향을 유추할 수 있었다. 건조환경변수에서는 가구밀도, 지하철밀도(행정동 반경 1km), 버스정류장밀도(행정동 반경 500m), 교차로 밀도(행정동 반경 1km)가 유의한 것으로 나타났으며, 해당 변수의 값이 상승할수록 자동차 통행발생량은 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 모형의 예측 정확도 검증 결과 영과잉 음이항 모형의 오차율은 2.47%로 높은 정확도를 가진다고 평가할 수 있다.
