Why did NATSUME Soseki interrrupt “Manchuria-Korea here and there?”<BR> TANAKA Toshihiko (Kobe City University of foreign studies)<BR> NATSUME Soseki(1867-1916), well known as the foremost novelist in modern Japan, traveled from September 2 to October 17 1909 in Manchuria and Korea, and as soon as returning to Tokyo started on October 21 an serial account of his travels in Asahi Shinbun, namely “Manchuria―Korea here and there”(1909). But under the pretext that the end of year came Soseki suddenly interrrupted on December 30 this serial in which he arrived at the Fushun coal mine in Manchuria. We can feel that this pretext is a poor excuse, and that a real reason is somewhere else. Why ever on earth did Soseki interrrupt his travel sketch?<BR> In his travel Soseki visited Halbin after the Fushun coal mine. It is on October 26 that ITO Hirofumi was assasinated by AN Jung-geun. It is clear that Soseki’s interrruption had something to do with this event; but what is the real relationship between these two events? That is a queation we try to answer in this paper. We also try to examine Soseki’s vision of Asia(China and Korea) as well as of the Occident.
Dynamics Analysis and Optimal Control of a Marine Diesel Engine

This paper describes dynamics analysis of a governor-engine control system in a marine diesel engine and its optimal control at sea. A new governor system is developed which takes into account the ship’s motion, and the results of full-scale experiments using the new system are presented. Statistical analysis using a Multivariate Auto Regressive (MAR) model is performed on data collected from the sea trial of a small training ship, the Shioji Maru. It is shown that the speed of the ship’s propeller is strongly influenced by the ship’s pitching motion. Based on this observation, a new type of marine governor that takes the ship’s pitching motion into account is designed using modern multivariate control theory. Finally, full-scale experiments into the performance of the new system are conducted.

In Japan, most scholarly journals have been published by scientific societies as in other Asian countries. In those days, Japanese and English language articles were commonly found within the same issue of an academic journal published by scientific societies. Many societies of natural sciences started to publish separate periodicals of international journals with an English version and a domestic Japanese version 20 years ago due to the internationalization of the scientific community. The Japanese Society of Grassland Science has also published both an international journal called Grassland Science and a domestic journal called Japanese Journal of Grassland Science (Nihon Sochigakkai Shi) since 2005. The first impact factor for Grassland Science was announced in 2013. International foreign handling editors represent more than half of all handling editors covering the world. Thus, recently, the number of submissions from foreign countries, especially from China, has drastically increased. With the increase in submissions, it becomes difficult to edit a journal professionally because the editors are generally professors in universities and scientists in national institutes who work as part-time volunteer editors and have been changed frequently. The decrease in the number of members is also a serious problem in many societies of agriculture sciences. The construction of an Asian network for scientific information may be one direction in the near future. Additionally, it is be necessary to change to open access journals in order to stabilize the publishing management of the journals.
A study on dynamics analysis of a small ship and pitch motion stabilization by engine speed control

This paper describes dynamics analysis of a small training ship and a possibility of ship pitching stabilization by adjusting engine speed. First, statistical analysis through multi-variate auto regressive(MAR) model is carried out. After upgrading the navigational system of an actual small training ship, in order to identify the model of the ship, the real data collected by sea trials on the ship were used. This analysis has shown that the pitching motion is influenced by the engine speed and it is suggested that there exists a possibility of reducing the pitching motion by controlling the engine throttle properly. Based on this observation, a new type of ship controller, which takes the pitching motion into account, is designed using the muti-variate modern control theory. Last, in order to evaluate the proposed controller, digital simulations by white noise are carried out. As results of simulations, the proposed system has good performance compared with the original data.
Vibration Control of Suspended Load System by Bias Momentum Method

Motion control suppressing the swaying and rotation of the loads is often required for handling suspended load systems such as cranes, ropeway gondolas, or balloon gondolas. In this study, a new vibration control method using bias momentum attitude control is proposed. This control method utilizes a momentum wheel and a reaction wheel. Bias angular momentum stored on the momentum wheel induces dynamic coupling, and torsional vibration and swaying vibration of the suspended load can be suppressed by only two degree-of-freedom control torques. This paper reports the concept of the proposed vibration control method, derivation of the kinematic model, and design of control laws based on Lyapunov functions. Development of the experimental device and the numerical simulation studies are also described briefly.
Free Fat Graft for Congenital Hand Differences

Background: Free fat graft has been used for the treatment of congenital hand differences. However, there have been a fewreports about the outcome of that treatment. In this study, the outcome of free fat grafts for congenital hand and foot differenceswas investigated. Methods: Fourteen bones with longitudinal epiphyseal bracket, 3 wrists with Madelung deformity, and 5 cases of osseous syndactylywere treated with free fat graft with osteotomy, physiolysis, or separation of osseous syndactyly. Of the fourteen boneswith longitudinal epiphyseal bracket, 9 were treated with open wedge osteotomy with free fat graft and 5 with physiolysis andfree fat graft. The Madelung deformity was treated with physiolysis with free fat graft. For osseous syndactyly, syndactyly releasewith free fat graft was performed fi ve times on four hands. Results: In the fourteen cases with longitudinal epiphyseal bracket, lateral deviation improved in all except two cases after surgery. The average lateral deviation angle changed from 32.5 degrees before surgery to 15.2 degrees after surgery. The average improvementof the lateral deviation angle was 12.2 degrees in the osteotomy group and 20.6 degrees in the physiolysis group. Themean ratio of improvement of the lateral deviation angle to the lateral deviation angle before surgery was 39.4% in the osteotomygroup and 51.2% in the physiolysis group. The Madelung deformity improved after surgery in two cases but there was no improvementin one case. For these conditions, the results were not good enough when surgery was done after age 13 or at age four forseverely hypoplastic brachymesophalangy. Of the 5 cases of osseous syndactyly, reunion of the separated bones occurred in onecase. The grafted free fat should be deep enough to cover the osteotomy site of the bones to prevent reunion of the separatedbones. Conclusions: Physiolysis and free fat graft performed during the growth period can correct the deviation due to longitudinalepiphyseal bracket and Madelung deformity. Free fat graft is also useful to prevent reunion of the bones after separation of osseoussyndcatyly, if the grafted fat is securely fi lled into the space between the separated bones.
