A Drosophila model for Alzheimer’s disease revealed synaptic neuropathy and biochemical alterations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease characterized by extensive loss of synaptic connections, neuronal death, and the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (iNFTs). The extracellular amlyoid plaques are mainly composed of the amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide which formed by proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Aβ42peptide oligomerizes, is neurotoxic and readily forms aggregates that accumulate in the brain to form plaques. These oligomers are thought to cause inflammation, oxidative stress and apoptosis, thereby resulting in synaptic and neuronal loss. Although AD is neurodegenerative disorder, current therapies designed to treat it still demonstrate limited efficacy. Silkworm (Bombyx mori) has long been used as food and medicine in Asian countries which is reputed for the treatment of numerous neurological disorders including AD. In this study, we use Drosophila melanogaster which is expressed the human AD-associated protein APP695, BACE and MAPT as the model and initially investigate whether silkworm powder food has positive effect on flies expressing Alzheimer’s status as well as makes the improvement in disease condition by using this AD fly model (This work was carried out with the support of the Cooperative Research Program for Agriculture Science & Technology Development (Project title: Elucidation the health improvement effects of boiled silk worm larvae, Project No: PJ01082801) Rural Development Administration)
Performance Evaluation of Frame-loss Error-concealment Solutions for the SHVC Standard

Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) has been emerging as an efficient video coding solution for adaptive video streaming and conferencing. SHVC is designed with a layered coding structure in which High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) tools are employed as core elements. However, compression efficiency and error sensitivity associated with efficient HEVC tools make this scalable codec less attractive for practical video transmission, especially when the loss of packets or video frames occurs. This problem severely impacts the display quality of received video. To address this problem, we propose efficient error concealment (EC) methods that compensate for a whole frame that is lost and that mitigate the error propagation problem occurring in practical video transmissions using SHVC. The presented EC methods mainly rely on the decoded information; thus, it is easily integrated into the SHVC decoder as a post-processing component. The experimental results obtained for both subjective and objective quality assessments show that the inter-layer correlation-based EC approach typically provides the highest concealed frame quality; thus, it is highly recommended for practical video transmission.

<P>We experimentally demonstrate that the efficiency of wireless power transfer utilizing resonant coupling is improved by applying the “matching condition.” The `matching condition' is extracted from an equivalent circuit model of a magnetically coupled wireless power transfer system. This condition is achieved by varying the coupling factor between the source (load) and the internal resonator. Applying this technique results in efficiency improvements of 46.2% and 29.3% at distances of 60 cm and 1 m, respectively. The maximum efficiency is 92.5% at 15 cm. A circuit model based on the extracted parameters of the resonators produces results similar to the experimental data.</P>
Elastic modulus of ASR-affected concrete: An evaluation using Artificial Neural Network

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete can induce degradation in its mechanical properties, leading to compromised serviceability and even loss in load capacity of concrete structures. Compared to other properties, ASR often affects the modulus of elasticity more significantly. Several empirical models have thus been established to estimate elastic modulus reduction based on the ASR expansion only for condition assessment and capacity evaluation of the distressed structures. However, it has been observed from experimental studies in the literature that for any given level of ASR expansion, there are significant variations on the measured modulus of elasticity. In fact, many other factors, such as cement content, reactive aggregate type, exposure condition, additional alkali and concrete strength, have been commonly known in contribution to changes of concrete elastic modulus due to ASR. In this study, an artificial intelligent model using artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed for the first time to provide an innovative approach for evaluation of the elastic modulus of ASR-affected concrete, which is able to take into account contribution of several influence factors. By intelligently fusing multiple information, the proposed ANN model can provide an accurate estimation of the modulus of elasticity, which shows a significant improvement from empirical based models used in current practice. The results also indicate that expansion due to ASR is not the only factor contributing to the stiffness change, and various factors have to be included during the evaluation.
A Cooperative Spectrum Sensing Scheme Using Fuzzy Logic for Cognitive Radio Networks

This paper proposes a novel scheme for cooperative spectrum sensing on distributed cognitive radio networks. A fuzzy logic rule - based inference system is proposed to estimate the presence possibility of the licensed user`s signal based on the observed energy at each cognitive radio terminal. The estimated results are aggregated to make the final sensing decision at the fusion center. Simulation results show that significant improvement of the spectrum sensing accuracy is achieved by our schemes.

Purpose: Despite significant research on decision-making, researchers struggle to comprehend the decision-making process. This paper aims to not only examine the relationship between problem-solving skills, cognitive competency, and decision-making but also develop measurement instruments for cognitive competency and problem-solving skills to better model decision-making. Research Design, Methodology and Approach: A cross-sectional study was conducted by surveying 292 university students in HCM City, Vietnam, via email sent randomly by Google Forms. This study identifies the conceptual framework and tests the hypotheses using a deductive approach. The SPSS program was used to evaluate the scales' reliability, and the SmartPLS program was used to assess the measurement and structural models. Results: The results show that the research model better modelled the relationship between problem-solving skills, cognitive competency, and decision-making. Although thinking ability has no direct impact on decision-making, both creativity and problem-solving skills have a positive impact on decision-making. The mediating role of problem-solving skills is also determined by the positive relationship between cognitive competency and decision-making. Conclusions: This study highlights decision-making efficiency through the cognitive process from low to high levels and provides for policymakers and managers to explain the decisionmaking process in a variety of sectors, such as distribution chains, marketing, and human resource distribution.
