Senescence marker protein 30 (SMP30) is identified as an important aging marker molecule and known to play multifunctional roles as an intracellular calcium regulatory protein in the signaling process. To elucidate the functional significance of SMP30, we established the stably transfected P19 cell line with SMP30 expression vector. Overexpression of SMP30 slightly suppressed the proliferation of P19 cells. However, SMP30 overexpression was cytoprotective against calcium-mediated stress such as calcium ionophore (A23187), and thapsigargin. We found that SMP30 overexpression reduced the elevated intracellular calcium levels induced by A23187, but not by thapsigargin. In addition, SMP30 transfected P19 cells were more protective to tert-butylhydroperoxide induced cytotoxicity, indicating the antioxidative properties of SMP30. Taken together, our results suggest that external calcium regulation and antioxidant properties are involved in the cytoprotective mechanism of SMP30.

<P>Senescence maker protein 30 (SMP30) is decreased in an androgen-independent manner in kidney and liver with age. However, regulation of SMP30 expression in the brain has not been examined in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. To investigate SMP30 expression in the brain, we utilized aging and kainate (KA)-induced neurodegenerative disease models. Interestingly, expression of SMP30 was unlikely to decrease in the aged brain, but total levels of SMP30 protein were increased at 4 weeks after KA injury. Increased glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) with elevated SMP30 expression was observed at the same time post-KA, indicating that regulation of SMP30 expression in the brain may be associated with astrocytosis. We confirmed that KA induced GFAP expression with increased SMP30 in rat astrocyte cells. Moreover, we found that ERK1/2 activation was involved in the up-regulation of SMP30 in astrocytes. Our results suggest that elevated SMP30 in activated astrocytes plays an important supportive role after brain damage. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, air washers are used to remove airborne gaseous contaminants from the outdoor air introduced into a clean room. Meanwhile, there is a large amount of exhaust air from a clean room. From an energy conservation point of view, heat recovery is useful for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load required to maintain a clean room. Therefore it is desirable to recover heat from the exhaust air and use it to cool or heat the outdoor air. In the present study, numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the recovered heat of an exhaust air heat recovery type air washer system, which is the key part of an energy saving outdoor air conditioning system for semiconductor clean rooms. The present numerical results showed relatively good agreement with the available experimental data.

In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, the energy consumption of outdoor air conditioning systems represents about 45 % of the total air conditioning load required to maintain a clean room environment. Therefore, the performance evaluation of outdoor air conditioning systems is useful for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load for a clean room. In the present study, an experiment was conducted to compare each other the energy consumptions of steam humidification, air washer and air washer to recover heat from the exhaust air type and using low temperature waste heat type air washer outdoor air conditioning systems. It was shown from the lab-scale experiment with an outdoor air flow of 1,000 ㎥/h that the air washer type, air washer to recover heat from the exhaust air type and using low temperature waste heat type air washer outdoor air conditioning systems was much more energy-efficient for the summer and winter operations than the steam humidification system.

In the present study, an experiment was conducted to investigate saturation efficiencies of air washer, the energy consumption and heat recovery efficiencies for fin-coil type air washer systems. In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, the energy consumption of outdoor air conditioning systems represents about 45 % of the total air conditioning load required to maintain a clean room environment. Meanwhile, there is a large amount of exhaust air from a clean room. From an energy conservation point of view, heat recovery is therefore useful for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load for a clean room. In the present work, an energy-efficient outdoor air conditioning system was proposed to reduce the outdoor air conditioning load by utilizing an air washer to recover heat from the exhaust air. The proposed outdoor air conditioning system consisted mainly of a preheating coil, an air washer, two stage cooling coils, a reheating coil, a humidifier and two heat recovery cooling coils inserted into the air washer and connected to a wet scrubber.
Phospholipase D inhibitor enhances radiosensitivity of breast cancer cells

Radiation and drug resistance remain the major challenges and causes of mortality in the treatment of locally advanced,recurrent and metastatic breast cancer. Dysregulation of phospholipase D (PLD) has been found in several human cancers and is associated with resistance to anticancer drugs. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of PLD inhibition on cell survival, cell death and DNA damage after exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). Combined IR treatment and PLD inhibition led to an increase in the radiation-induced apoptosis of MDA-MB-231 metastatic breast cancer cells. The selective inhibition of PLD1and PLD2 led to a significant decrease in the IR-induced colony formation of breast cancer cells. Moreover, PLD inhibition suppressed the radiation-induced activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and enhanced the radiation-stimulated phosphorylation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases p38 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. Furthermore, PLD inhibition, in combination with radiation, was very effective at inducing DNA damage, when compared with radiation alone. Taken together,these results suggest that PLD may be a useful target molecule for the enhancement of the radiotherapy effect.

최근의 반도체 제조용 대규모 클린룸에서는 도입 외기를 가열가습 및 냉각감습하는 외기공조시스템의 에너지소비량이 클린룸 환경을 유지하기 위해 필요한 전체 공조에너지의 약 45 %를 차지하고 있다. 특히 동기(겨울철)의 경우 외기를 가습하기 위한 에너지소비량은 매우 높다. 따라서 에너지절감을 통한 제조비용 절감 및 온실가스 감축을 위해 외기부하와 관계되는 공조에너지의 사용효율 증대 및 철저한 사용합리화가 요구되고 있다. 따라서 반도체 클린룸용 외기공조시스템의 핵심 가습방식인 증기가습과 수분무가습 방식에 대한 소비전력량을 분석하는 것은 에너지절약적 측면에서 상당히 가치가 있다고 판단된다. 본 연구에서는 전극봉식 가습기에 의한 증기가습방식 및 에어와셔에 의한 수분무가습방식 외기공조시스템들의 공조프로세스 및 소비전력량을 외기량1000 ㎥/h 의 경우 기흥지역의 동기 및 하기의 피크부하에 대해 비교하는 실험을 수행하였다. 실험결과들로부터 에어와셔 수분무가습 외기공조시스템이 전극봉식 증기가습 외기공조시스템보다 연간 소비전력량이 적어서 에너지절약적임을 보여주었다. In modern large-scale semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, the energy consumed by the outdoor air-conditioning system during heating, humidification, cooling, and dehumidification of the incoming outdoor air represents about 45% of the total air-conditioning load required to maintain a clean-room environment. In particular, the energy required for humidification of the outdoor air in winter is very high. Therefore, evaluation and comparison of the energy consumption in key humidification systems, viz., steam-humidification and water-spray?humidification systems, used in outdoor air-conditioning systems would be useful to reduce the outdoor air-conditioning load in clean rooms. In the present study, an experiment with an outdoor air flow of 1000 ㎥/h was conducted to compare the air-conditioning process and energy consumption in outdoor air-conditioning systems with electrodeboiler steam humidifiers and air-washer water spray humidification systems. The experimental results showed that the water-spray?humidification-type outdoor air-conditioning system consumed less electrical power than did the steam-humidification-type system and was more energy efficient during winter.
