Developing PCR-Based SNP Markers for Distinguishing Korean Waxy Corn F<sub>1</sub> Hybrids

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are abundantly and evenly distributed throughout the genomes of most plant species. These markers have become popular for use in genetic research in many crops. SNP markers can be used to screen maize cultivars rapidly during the early growth stages. In this study, to develop additional SNP markers for maize, we chose 20 SNP sites per chromosome from the maizeGDB website (www.maizegdb.org) and designed primers with two base pair mismatches using Primer Designer 4 based on putative SNP sites of the B73 genome sequence. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products ranged from 200 to 500 bp in size, whereas no PCR product was detected when the SNP site was present in Korean waxy corn. Using nine Korean commercial F<sub>1</sub> hybrids of waxy corn, including Chalok 1, Chalok 4, Ilmichal, Eolrukchal 1, Heukjinjuchal, Hayanchal 95, Mibaekchal, Mibaek 2, and Miheukchal, we selected 16 primer sets showing clear bands or no bands. Based on cluster analysis, we confirmed that the nine Korean waxy corn hybrids could clearly be distinguished. The SNP marker sets are easy to utilize through simple PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis. These results suggest that analysis using the SNP marker set designed in this study would be faster, cheaper, and more reproducible than that using other genotyping tools, such as cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence markers, which require the use of restriction enzymes.
Case Reports : Cutaneous Extraskeletal Osteosarcoma on the Scar of a Previous Bone Graft

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a very rare malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin. It is rarer than osseous osteosarcoma and there are very few reports of the skin being a primary site. Most reported cutaneous ESOS were accompanied with metastasis in other organs. A 56-year-old man presented with a painful, 1.5×0.8 cm sized, brown- colored nodule on the right girdle area for 3 months. The histologic findings revealed a tumor that was confined to the dermis without connection to the subcutaneous tissue. In addition, there were large amounts of thin and lace-like bony trabeculae and osteoid with neoplastic cells in a highly pleomorphic sarcomatous stroma. (Ann Dermatol 23(S2) S160~S164, 2011)
Primary sinonasal mucosal melanoma simulated as cystic lesions: a case report

Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) in the maxillary sinus is a rare disease condition. Compared to oral mucosal melanoma, SNMM has a bulky, exophytic, and polypoid appearance, is weakly pigmented, and associated with unspecific symptoms. Due to these features, SNMM in the maxillary sinus has been misdiagnosed as nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis. In this case report, we described SNMM occurring in the right maxillary sinus simulated as a cystic or benign lesion. Cortical bone thinning and expansion were observed around the mass. The excised soft mass was encapsulated and weakly pigmented. The mass was clearly excised and covered with a pedicled buccal fat pad graft. Diagnosis using immunohistochemistry with S-100 and homatropine methylbromide-45 (HMB-45) is critical for proper treatment.
Case Report : Endometrial adenocarcinoma in a 13-year-old girl

Endometrial cancer is the third most common gynecologic cancer in the Korea and occurs mainly in menopausal women. Although it can develop in young premenopausal women cancer as well, an attack in the adolescent girl is very rare. A 13-year-old girl visited gynecology department with the complaint of abnormal uterine bleeding. An endometrial biopsy revealed FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) grade II endometrial adenocarcinoma. In the treatment of endometrial cancer, conservative management should be considered if the patient is nulliparous or wants the fertility preservation. Therefore, we decided to perform a hormonal therapy and a follow-up endometrial biopsy after progestin administration for eight months revealed no residual tumor. We report a case of endometrial cancer occurred in a 13-year-old girl with a brief review of the literature.
Design Of Fuzzy Controller for the Steam Temperature Process in the Coal Fired Power Plant

In this paper, we proposed the method to design fuzzy controller using the experience of the operating expert and experimental numeric data for the robust control about the noise and disturbance instead of the traditional PID controller for the main steam temperature control of the thermal power plant. The temperature of main steam temperature process has to be controlled uniformly for the stable electric power output. The process has the problem of the hunting for the cases of various disturbances. In that case, the manual action of the operator happened to be introduced in some cases. We adopted the TSK (Takagi-Sugeno-Kang) model as the fuzzy controller and designed the fuzzy rules using the informations extracted directly from the real plant and various operating condition to solve the above problems and to apply practically. We implemented the real fuzzy controller as the Function Block module in the DCS(Distributed Control System) and evaluated the feasibility through the experimental results of the simulation.

<P>Ginsenoside Re, one of the main constituents of Panax ginseng, possesses novel antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the pharmacological mechanism of ginsenoside Re in dopaminergic degeneration remains elusive. We suggested that protein kinase C (PKC) δ mediates methamphetamine (MA)-induced dopaminergic toxicity. Treatment with ginsenoside Re significantly attenuated methamphetamine-induced dopaminergic degeneration in vivo by inhibiting impaired enzymatic antioxidant systems, mitochondrial oxidative stress, mitochondrial translocation of protein kinase Cδ, mitochondrial dysfunction, pro-inflammatory microglial activation, and apoptosis. These protective effects were comparable to those observed with genetic inhibition of PKCδ in PKCδ knockout (-/-) mice and with PKCδ antisense oligonucleotides, and ginsenoside Re did not provide any additional protective effects in the presence of PKCδ inhibition. Our results suggest that PKCδ is a critical target for ginsenoside Re-mediated protective activity in response to dopaminergic degeneration induced by MA.</P>

In monsoon climates, persistent shade is a troublesome weather condition with an impact on the growth and yield of corn (Zea mays L.). We imposed 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of consecutive shade (CS) on Gwangpyeongok and P3394 corn hybrids at the beginning of the kernel filling stages. Shade had little impact on leaf area and dry matter accumulation in the stem and leaves. However, dry matter accumulation in the ear was severely reduced by approximately 28% and 53% after 14 and 28 days of CS, respectively. For the components of grain yield, 7 and 14 days of shade did irreparable damage to the number of filled kernels, the kernel number per ear row, and the percent of filled kernels, but did little damage or reversible damage after removal of the shade to the 100-grain weight and the row number per ear. Shade significantly reduced the relative growth rate (RGR) due to a decrease in the net assimilation rate (NAR). These results suggest that source activity limitation by shade during the kernel filling stages leads to the inhibition of sink activity and size. The yield of biomass, ear, and grain logistically declined as the length of CS increased. Probit analysis revealed that the number of days of CS needed to cause 25% and 50% reductions in grain yield were 3.7 and 23.1, respectively. These results suggest that the plant yield loss induced by shade at the beginning of the kernel filling stages is mainly achieved within the first 7 days of consecutive shade.
