Identification of the Gene Products Responsible for F Plasmid Partitioning

        KIM, SUNG0UK,NAGAI, KAZUO,TAMURA, GAKUZO,YU, JU-HYUN,BOK, SONG-HAE 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 1993 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.3 No.4

DNA subfragments, sopA, sopB and sopC which help to maintain the stability of an on C plasmid, were derived from a mini-F plasmid DNA (EcoRI restriction fragment f5) after digestion with restriction endonuclease, and cloned in the vector plasmid pBR322. The recombinant plasmids obtained were introduced into E. coli KY7231 and E. coli CSR603 strains, and proteins specified by the mini-F fragments were analysed by SDS-PAGE. Two proteins encoded by the F fragments were detected, and their molecular weights were 41,000 and 37,000 daltons. Fluorography after one and two dimensional gel electrophoresis of the lysates showed that these two proteins had been overproduced in the cells which were allowed to incorporate radioactive amino acid after plasmid amplification by chloramphenicol treatment. The isoelectric points of sopA and sopB proteins were 6.6 and 7.0, respectively.

Original Article : Geographic difference of epidemiological features of HCV infection in Korea

( Kyung Ah Kim ),( Sook Hyang Jeong ),( Eun Sun Jang ),( Young Seok Kim3 ),( Youn Jae Lee ),( Eun Uk Jung ),( In Hee Kim ),( Sung Bum Cho ),( Mee Kyung Kee ),( Chun Kang ) 대한간학회 2014 Clinical and Molecular Hepatology(대한간학회지) Vol.20 No.4

Background/Aims: The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Korea exhibits significant geographic variation, with it being higher in Busan and Jeonam than in other areas. The reason for this intranational geographic difference was investigated in this study by conducting a comparative analysis of the risk factors related to HCV infection among three geographic areas: the capital (Seoul), Busan, and the province of Jeolla. Methods: In total, 990 patients with chronic HCV infection were prospectively enrolled at 5 university hospitals located in Seoul (n=374), Busan (n=264), and Jeolla (n=352). A standardized questionnaire survey on the risk factors for HCV infection was administered to these three groups of patients, and a comparative analysis of the findings was performed. Results: The analysis revealed significant regional differences in exposure to the risk factors of HCV infection. By comparison with patients in Seoul as a control group in the multivariate analysis, patients in Busan had significantly more experience of invasive medical procedures, acupuncture, cosmetic procedures, and multiple sex partners. In contrast, patients in Jeolla were significantly older, and they had a higher prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma, a lower prevalence of multiple sex partners, and had experienced fewer invasive procedures. Conclusions: There was a significant geographic difference in the exposure to potential risk factors of HCV infection between patients from the three studied regions. This may explain the regional variation of the prevalence of HCV infection in Korea, and should be taken into account when planning strategies for the prevention and management of HCV infection. National Surveillance of Pediatric Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Korea: The 10-Year Trend From 2009 to 2018

        Kim Minha,Yu Jaeyong,Chang Hansol,Heo Sejin,Lee Se Uk,Hwang Sung Yeon,Yoon Hee,Cha Won Chul,Shin Tae Gun,Kim Taerim 대한의학회 2022 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.37 No.44

Background: This study reports trends in pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and factors affecting clinical outcomes by age group. Methods: We identified 4,561 OHCA patients younger than 18 years between January 2009 and December 2018 in the Korean OHCA Registry. The patients were divided into four groups: group 1 (1 year or younger), group 2 (1 to 5 years), group 3 (6 to 12 years), and group 4 (13 to 17 years). The primary outcome was survival to hospital discharge, and the secondary outcomes were return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) at the emergency department (ED) and good neurological status at discharge. Multivariate logistic analyses were performed. Results: The incidence rate of pediatric OHCA in group 1 increased from 45.57 to 60.89 per 100,000 person-years, while that of the overall population decreased over the 10 years. The rates of ROSC at the ED, survival to hospital discharge, and good neurologic outcome were highest in group 4 (37.9%, 9.7%, 4.9%, respectively) and lowest in group 1 (28.3%, 7.1%, 3.2%). The positive factors for survival to discharge were event location of a public/commercial building or place of recreation, type of first responder, prehospital delivery of automated external defibrillator shock, initial shockable rhythm at the ED. The factors affecting survival outcomes differed by age group. Conclusion: This study reports comprehensive trends in pediatric OHCA in the Republic of Korea. Our findings imply that preventive methods for the targeted population should be customized by age group.

Design and Fabrication of Electrostatic Inkjet Head using Silicon Micromachining Technology

Kim, Young-Min,Son, Sang-Uk,Choi, Jae-Yong,Byun, Do-Young,Lee, Suk-Han The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2008 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.8 No.2

This paper presents design and fabrication of optimized geometry structure of electrostatic inkjet head. In order to verify effect of geometry shape, we simulate electric field intensity according to the head structure. The electric field strength increases linearly with increasing height of the micro nozzle. As the nozzle diameter decreases, the electric field along the periphery of the meniscus can be more concentrated. We design and fabricate the electrostatic inkjet heads, hole type and pole type, with optimized structure. It was fabricated using thick-thermal oxidation and silicon micromachining technique such as the deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and chemical wet etching process. It is verified experimentally that the use of the MEMS inkjet head allows a stable and sustainable micro-dripping mode of droplet ejection. A stable micro dripping mode of ejection is observed under the voltages 2.5 kV and droplet diameter is $10\;{\mu}m$.

Highly Manufacturable 65nm McFET (Multi-channel Field Effect Transistor) SRAM Cell with Extremely High Performance

        Kim, Sung-Min,Yoon, Eun-Jung,Kim, Min-Sang,Li, Ming,Oh, Chang-Woo,Lee, Sung-Young,Yeo, Kyoung-Hwan,Kim, Sung-Hwan,Choe, Dong-Uk,Suk, Sung-Dae,Kim, Dong-Won,Park, Dong-Gun The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2006 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.6 No.1

We demonstrate highly manufacturable Multi-channel Field Effect Transistor (McFET) on bulk Si wafer. McFET shows excellent transistor characteristics, such as $5{\sim}6 times higher drive current than planar MOSFET, ideal subthreshold swing, low drain induced barrier lowering (DIBL) without pocket implantation and negligible body bias dependency, maintaining the same source/drain resistance as that of a planar transistor due to the unique feature of McFET. And suitable threshold voltage ($V_T$) for SRAM operation and high static noise margin (SNM) are achieved by using TiN metal gate electrode.

Extracellular Domain of V-Set and Immunoglobulin Domain Containing 1 (VSIG1) Interacts with Sertoli Cell Membrane Protein, while Its PDZ-Binding Motif Forms a Complex with ZO-1

        Kim, Ek-Yune,Lee, Young-Jeon,Kim, Ji-Su,Song, Bong-Seok,Kim, Sun-Uk,Huh, Jae-Won,Lee, Sang-Rae,Kim, Sang-Hyun,Hong, Yong-Geun,Chang, Kyu-Tae Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2010 Molecules and cells Vol.30 No.5

V-set and immunoglobulin domain containing 1 (VSIG1) is a newly discovered member of the junctional adhesion molecule (JAM) family; it is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome X and preferentially expressed in a variety of cancers in humans. Little is known about its physiological function. To determine the role(s) of VSIG1 in mammalian spermatogenesis, we first generated a specific antibody against mouse VSIG1 and examined the presence and localization of the protein in tissues. RT-RCR and Western blot analysis of the mouse tissues indicated that VSIG1 was specifically expressed in the testis. Furthermore, the results of our trypsinization and biotinylation assays strongly support the assumption that VSIG1 is localized on the testicular germ cell surface. In order to determine whether VSIG1 is capable of participation in homotypic interactions, we performed a GST-pull down assay by using recombinant GST-fusion and Histagging proteins. The pull-down assay revealed that each GST-fusion Ig-like domain shows homotypic binding. We further show that mVSIG1 can adhere to the Sertoli cells through its first Ig-like domain. To identify the protein that interacted with cytoplasmic domain, we next performed co-immunoprecipitation analysis. This analysis showed that ZO-1, which is the central structural protein of the tight junction, is the binding partner of the cytoplasmic domain of mouse VSIG1. Our findings suggest that mouse VSIG1 interacts with Sertoli cells by heterophilic adhesion via its first Ig-like domain. In addition, its cytoplasmic domain is critical for binding to ZO-1.

Study of Optimized Hip Implant Development for Hip Implant in Total Hip Replacement

        Kim, Hyung-Jin,Chu, Jun-Uk,Han, Sung-Min,Choi, Kui-Won,Yoo, Jeong-Hoon,Youn, In-Chan 한국정밀공학회 2011 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.12 No.4

A hip implant re-operation is usually related to the service life of the component, as determined by its material properties, or a loosening of the hip implant resulting from a poor alignment with adjacent bone tissues. These issues invariably arise from the use of standardized products even though each patient differs in terms of anatomical parameters of their hips. To deal with such challenges, customized hip implants are needed that are designed to optimize the alignment with the hip according to the anatomical differences of individual patients. Therefore, this study presents an optimal joint restoration system optimized to the needs of the individual user as regards developing treatment technology to restore the function of an aged joint. A hip implant usually consists of a body and neck, thus, among 15 anatomical basic parameters of the human femur, 8 are selected as hip implant design input parameters to focus on the most critical elements for a hip implant in the case of a total hip replacement. In addition, specific design input parameters are proposed including a wiring hole and distal slotted part, and analyzed using a finite element analysis method. The anatomical parameters in relation to a variation of the neck length are also analyzed in the same manner. To confirm the design parameters enabling normal hip implantation, a maximum neck shaft angle and length threshold model is implemented on the basis of the statistical average femoral configuration of Koreans and verified by a FEM (Finite Element Method) fatigue analysis. An analysis protocol aligned with international specifications as applied and a threshold for each 4 the aforementioned parameters set up to derive optimal design parameters. Finally, as a pre-operation planning tool, the parameters of choice are extracted from an X-ray femur image and reconstructed into a 2D/3D CAD model using a customized hip implant design software program, and the model stability is verified using a static FEM.

Numerical study on performance improvement when strong vortex occurs on the shroud of vaneless diffuser in turbo blower

        Uk-Hee Jung,Sung Kim,Kyung-Ho Jeong,Jin-Hyuk Kim,Kyoung-Yong Lee,최영석 대한기계학회 2016 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.30 No.6

This research is about improving the performance of a turbo blower when a strong vortex occurs on the shroud of a vaneless diffuser. The design parameters for a vaneless diffuser in a turbo blower were analyzed, and the optimum design conditions for a vaneless diffuser were derived. Among these parameters, the independent ones were outer radius of the diffuser (R d ), cross-sectional area ratio of the diffuser (A d /A i ), and generation method for the shroud curve in the diffuser. The dependent parameter was fan static efficiency in the CFD;moreover, the purpose of this study was to maximize this efficiency. The influence of the design parameters was analyzed using Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Design of experiments (DOE). The reliability of CFD results was verified by comparing the experimental and CFD results obtained using a preliminary model. For DOE, a full factorial design and the response surface methodology were employed, and a regression equation was used for deriving the optimum design conditions. The DOE results revealed that as R d increased and A d /A i increased accordingly, the fan static efficiency in the CFD also increased. Furthermore, as R d increased, the high-value range of the fan static efficiency in the CFD increased. In general, the performance of the turbo blower was enhanced when the vortex region in the vaneless diffuser decreased in area. In addition, the cross-sectional area of the vaneless diffuser was designed to achieve recovery of static pressure.
