<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A commercial MgAlZn alloy (AZ31) was processed by high pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature, resulting in an extreme microstructure refinement down to the grain size of 150–250nm. The microstructure evolution during HPT was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. The microhardness was measured as a function of the distance from the center of the disk and the number of HPT revolutions. The detailed analysis of dislocation contrast factors in X-ray diffraction line profiles enables to determine the population of the different slip systems as a function of the imposed strain. The influence of microstructure and defect structure evolution on microhardness is discussed in detail.</P>
Exercise and Physical Activity in Mental Disorders: Clinical and Experimental Evidence

Several epidemiological studies have shown that exercise (EX) and physical activity (PA) can prevent or delay the onset of different mental disorders, and have therapeutic benefits when used as sole or adjunct treatment in mental disorders. This review summarizes studies that used EX interventions in patients with anxiety, affective, eating, and substance use disorders, as well as schizophrenia and dementia/mild cognitive impairment. Despite several decades of clinical evidence with EX interventions, controlled studies are sparse in most disorder groups. Preliminary evidence suggests that PA/EX can induce improvements in physical, subjective and disorder-specific clinical outcomes. Potential mechanisms of action are discussed, as well as implications for psychiatric research and practice.

Yacon is an Andean plant that has been used in folk medicine for its medicinal properties. The beneficial effects of this plant are possibly due to the high content of phenolic compounds present in its leaves and roots. This study evaluated the in vitro toxicity of the hydroalcoholic extract of leaves and roots from yacon (1, 10, 50, and 100 μg/mL) through cell viability tests, genotoxic and mutagenic activity in leukocytes culture cells; and cytotoxicity and apoptosis cell death (1, 10, 50, 100, and 500 μg/mL) in cell line originally established from the primary mouse embryonic fibroblast cells that were cultured by the designated protocol, so-called 3T3 protocol “3-day transfer, inoculum 3 × 105 cells” (3T3 cell line). No mutagenic and cytotoxic activities were observed in leukocyte cultures. Cytotoxic activity was evidenced in the highest concentrations of yacon leaf extract (50 and 100 μg/mL), whereas all concentrations tested with yacon leaf extract there was induction for apoptosis in the 3T3 cells. Genotoxic potential was observed only at higher doses of leaf (50 and 100 μg/mL) and root (100 μg/mL) extract. These results suggest that yacon leaf at high concentrations may present toxic potential showing concentration-dependent behavior; however, in vivo studies should be performed to validate these results.

Microstructure and room temperature mechanical properties of α-titanium alloy Ti-5Al-0.5 V subjected to equal channelangular pressing (ECAP) and subsequent ultrasonic treatment (UST) have been studied. The ECAP was carried out at 600 °Cby route Bcand the UST at the frequency of 20 kHz and amplitude of compression-tension stresses of 100 MPa for processingtime of 60 s. The dislocation densities after ECAP and subsequent UST were estimated by x-ray diffraction and positronlifetime spectroscopy. By the latter, vacancy concentration also was determined. It has been shown that UST results in avery little increase in the dislocation density and vacancy concentration and has no considerable effect on the mechanicalproperties of the ECAP-ed titanium alloys. Basing on the data obtained and earlier published results of computer simulationsof the behavior of nonequilibrium grain boundaries in Ni and Ti under the action of ultrasound it is concluded thatthe structural transformations in Ti under UST occur at much higher stresses than in Ni, in which UST results in significantmodifications of the structure and properties.

We have studied the magnetization in fields up to IT at 5K, the saturation magnetization dependence on temperature and the temperature dependence of AC-susceptibility at very low fields (5mOe to 50mOe) of glassy Fe_(91-x)Zr_7B₂Ni_x (x = 0, 5, 10, 15) alloys. The temperature dependence of the magnetization follows the predictions of spin wave excitations with long wavelengths. At zero Ni concentration there is a clear competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions giving rise to spin-glass behaviour. The addition of Ni drastically modifies the magnetic properties: the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling is reduced and finally disappears, the spin wave stiffness increases from 39.5 to 87.3 meVŲ and Tc increases from 230 K to 478 K. We develop a simple model to quantify the competing interactions and to relate the antiferromagnelically coupled Fe moments to the Ni concentration. We find that the initial susceptibility increases with increasing Ni content along with a decrease of the temperature dependence.
