Role of Interleukin-4 (IL-4) in Respiratory Infection and Allergy Caused by Early-Life Chlamydia Infection

( Shujun Li ),( Lijuan Wang ),( Yulong Zhang ),( Long Ma ),( Jing Zhang ),( Jianbing Zu ),( Xuecheng Wu ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2021 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.31 No.8

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a type of pathogenic gram-negative bacteria that causes various respiratory tract infections including asthma. Chlamydia species infect humans and cause respiratory infection by rupturing the lining of the respiratory which includes the throat, lungs and windpipe. Meanwhile, the function of interleukin-4 (IL-4) in Ch. pneumoniae respiratory infection and its association with the development of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in adulthood and causing allergic airway disease (AAD) are not understood properly. We therefore investigated the role of IL-4 in respiratory infection and allergy caused by early life Chlamydia infection. In this study, Ch. pneumonia strain was propagated and cultured in HEp-2 cells according to standard protocol and infant C57BL/6 mice around 3-4 weeks old were infected to study the role of IL-4 in respiratory infection and allergy caused by early life Chlamydia infection. We observed that IL-4 is linked with Chlamydia respiratory infection and its absence lowers respiratory infection. IL-4R α2 is also responsible for controlling the IL-4 signaling pathway and averts the progression of infection and inflammation. Furthermore, the IL-4 signaling pathway also influences infection-induced AHR and aids in increasing AAD severity. STAT6 also promotes respiratory infection caused by Ch. pneumoniae and further enhanced its downstream process. Our study concluded that IL-4 is a potential target for preventing infection-induced AHR and severe asthma.

UDP-glycosyltransferase gene family expansion and functional perspectives in five tenebrionid beetles

        Li Xun,Yang Yanlin,Wei Shujun,Zhu Jia-Ying 한국응용곤충학회 2024 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.27 No.2

UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) are widely distributed biotransformation enzymes crucial for various physio logical processes. Through genomic analysis, 216 UGT genes were identified in five tenebrionoid beetles: Tebebrio molitor (46), Tribolium castaneum (43), Asbolus verrucosus (30), Hycleus cichorii (60), and Hycleus pha leratus (37), classified into 14 families, with 13 being coleopteran-specific. Lineage-specific expansion of the UGT321, UGT323, UGT324, and UGT347 families was observed, with evidence of gene duplications within these families. Notably, phytophagous blister beetles showed higher UGT321 gene counts compared to omnivorous darkling beetles, while UGT324 family expansion was noted in the latter. Investigation of temporal and tissuespecific UGT gene expression in T. molitor revealed over 60% of TmUGTs were highly expressed in the salivary gland, fat body, midgut, and Malpighian tubule, indicating roles in metabolism and detoxification. Particularly, UGT321 family members exhibited high expression across various tissues, suggesting diverse functions, including potential involvement in olfaction and detoxification. These findings emphasize the multifunctionality of UGTs and provide a basis for further research, utilizing T. molitor as a model organism.

Increased Circulating CXCL10 in Non-Segmental Vitiligo Concomitant with Autoimmune Thyroid Disease and Alopecia Areata

( Li Zhang ),( Xinya Xu ),( Shujun Chen ),( Yuli Kang ),( Xiuxiu Wang ),( Chengfeng Zhang ),( Leihong Xiang ) 대한피부과학회 2019 Annals of Dermatology Vol.31 No.4

Background: Vitiligo is a common acquired pigmentary disease caused by destruction of epidermal melanocytes in underlying autoimmune response. Few studies have been focused on the role of chemokines in non-segmental vitiligo (NSV) concomitant with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and alopecia areata (AA). Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the best serum biomarker for predictive role in the progression of vitiligo and to evaluate the influence of AA and/or AITD on vitiligo by using the biomarker. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited 45 NSV patients: 14 without either AITD or AA, 12 with AITD, 11 with AA, and 8 with both AITD and AA. Serum levels of CXCL1, CXCL8, CXCL9, CXCL10, CXCL12, CXCL13, and CXCL16 were analyzed by ELISA. CXCR3 mRNA expression was detected on PBMCs by RT-PCR. Improvement was evaluated using repigmentation scales. Results: Serum CXCL10 levels, along with the expression of CXCR3 mRNA were higher in NSV patients with AITD or AA alone than in those without AITD or AA. Moreover, serum CXCL10 levels, along with the expression of CXCR3 mRNA were higher in NSV patients with both AITD and AA than in those with AITD or AA alone. Poorer repigmentation was observed in NSV patients with both AA and AITD than in those with AA or AITD alone. Conclusion: CXCL10 could be a biomarker to predict the progression of NSV. Dermatologists should pay much attention to those NSV patients concomitant with AITD and/or AA, for comorbidity might lead to more active autoimmune reaction. (Ann Dermatol 31(4) 393∼402, 2019)

SPATIAL-BASED PREDICTIVE CONTROL FOR VEHICLE COLLISION AVOIDANCE BY STEERING MANEUVERS

        Shaosong Li,Yunsheng Tian,Xiaofeng Yue,Niaona Zhang,Shujun Wang 한국자동차공학회 2022 International journal of automotive technology Vol.23 No.1

A hierarchical vehicle collision avoidance control method based on model predictive control is presented in this study. In the upper level of the controller, a spatial-based two-degree-of-freedom vehicle model is used for dynamic path planning to decrease the computational burden of the algorithm. Obstacles and road boundaries are translated into spatialbased constraints on system states. An objective function that considers tire adhesion margin is introduced to the path tracking controller to enhance vehicle safety. Meanwhile, the dynamic constraints of vehicle lateral acceleration, sideslip, and tire slip angles are designed in accordance with the tire-road adhesion coefficient. A time-based nonlinear model predictive controller is also designed and compared with the proposed method to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the latter. Theoretical analyses and simulation results indicate that the proposed collision avoidance control system has good ollision avoidance effect.

      • Kinetics of Levulinic Acid Produced from Glucose Using Modified HZSM-5

        Xiaoyun Li,Lifei Yao,Lijie Jiang,Min Liang,Yu Qiu,Yuyang Tian,Shujun Han,Chuanling Si,Youngsoo Bae 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 2018 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 학술대회 Vol.2018 No.09

Levulinic acid is a valuable platform chemical which could be used as raw material to synthesis various chemicals and fuels. In this work, citric acid modified HZSM-5 and aluminum ion modified HZSM-5 were prepared and used in the production of levulinic acid from glucose. The modified HZSM-5 was characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, BET, TG and pyridine FTIR. The Brønsted acid sites density of citric acid modified HZSM-5 was higher than aluminum ion modified HZSM-5. More importantly, the kinetics of levulinic acid production catalyzed by citric acid modified HZSM-5 and aluminum ion modified HZSM-5 were investigated, respectively. The Saeman model was applied to predict the concentration of levulinic acid, and the values calculated by the model agreed well with the experimental data. The rate of production of levulinic acid with citric acid modified HZSM-5 was higher than that of aluminum ion modified HZSM-5. The model supplied a profound understanding in the conversion of glucose into levulinic acid with modified H-ZSM-5 zeolite.

Thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis on braking device of pipe belt conveyor

Yao Wang,Shujun Li,Wenjun Meng 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.3

In this study, the formula to calculate the impact factor of coupling (ξ) was proposed, considering the thermo-mechanical coupling problem of friction pairs for braking device during braking. First, a correlation between independent physical field parameters was provided by analyzing the interaction parameters of stress and temperature field. Next, the thermal analysis and thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis were completed for friction pairs using heat transfer module and structural mechanics module of COMSOL multiphysics software on the basis of the actual operating situation of a pipe belt conveyor. The distribution and variation characteristics of the temperature and stress fields were studied with comparative analysis for braking friction pairs during braking. The mathematical expression on the impact factor of coupling (ξ) depending on braking time (t) was established. Finally, the model with thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis was verified and compared with the thermal analysis model in terms of the measured surface temperature during braking. Simulation results revealed that the impact factor of coupling (ξ) decreased with braking time (t). However, the change rate of function initially decreased and then increased with time. An inflection point existed at t = 1.5396 s in the function ξ of t. In comparison with the small fluctuation of the simulations with thermal analysis model, the simulations with thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis model were in good agreement with the trend of experimental results, and all the maximum relative errors were less than 4 %. Thus, the simulation with thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis was more reliable than thermal analysis. This work could provide valuable insights in solving complex multiphysics coupling analysis.

        Yang Duo,Li Sen,Lan Jinxin,Ye Shujun,Zhang Longsheng 대한마취통증의학회 2024 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.77 No.3

Background: Vocal cord polyps are commonly encountered in the otorhinolaryngology department. The risk of anesthesia is high in patients with large vocal cord polyps. Awake intubation with appropriate airway tools provides a favorable safety profile.Case: We present the case of a 60-year-old male patient who had been suffering from a large vocal cord polyp for 16 years. Electronic laryngoscopy revealed that the vocal cord polyp was approximately 1.5 cm in diameter. The polyp had a pedicle and demonstrated synchronous motion with respiratory excursion. It covered almost the entire glottic area during inspiration and moved away from the glottis during expiration. A Disposcope endoscope was used for awake tracheal intubation, and the surgery was completed successfully. Conclusions: The Disposcope endoscope can be a useful option for awake orotracheal intubation in cases of anticipated difficult intubation and difficult facemask ventilation.

Synthesis and characterization of phenol-formaldehyde resin using enzymatic hydrolysis lignin

        Wei Qiao,Shujun Li,Guowan Guo,Shiyan Han,Shixue Ren,Yanli Ma 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.21 No.1

Enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) was utilized to partially replace phenol for preparing phenolformaldehyde(PF) resin. The influence of lignin substitution rate on the properties of the lignin-modifiedphenol-formaldehyde (LPF) resin was investigated. Lignin substitution of 60 wt% did not deteriorate theadhesive strength of PF resin. FTIR analysis of the resins revealed that the incorporation of EHL made nobig difference in chemical structure, but led to a deteriorated thermal resistance. The comparisonbetween LPF and bio-ethanol production residue-modified phenol-formaldehyde (RPF) resins elucidatedthat the purification processwas beneficial for its higher substitution application and better performanceof adhesive.

Vaginal Microbiome Dysbiosis is Associated with the Different Cervical Disease Status

        Ma Yingying,Li Yanpeng,Liu Yanmei,Cao Le,Han Xiao,Gao Shujun,Zhang Chiyu 한국미생물학회 2023 The journal of microbiology Vol.61 No.4

Vaginal microbiome composition was demonstrated to be associated with cervical disease. The colonization characteristics of vaginal microbes and their association with the different cervical disease status, especially cervical cancer (CC), are rarely investigated. In this cross-sectional study, we characterized the vaginal microbiome of women with different status of cervical diseases, including 22 NV + (normal tissue with HPV infection), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL, n = 45), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL, n = 36) and CC (n = 27) using bacterial 16S DNA sequencing. Thirty HPV-negative women with normal tissue were used as the control group. We found that higher diversity of microbiome with gradual depletion of Lactobacillus, especially L. crispatus, was associated with the severity of cervical disease. High-risk HPV16 infection was associated with higher microbiome diversity and depletion of Lactobacillus in high-grade cervical diseases (i.e. HSIL and CC). The CC group was characterized by higher levels of Fannyhessea vaginae, Prevotella, Bacteroides, Finegoldia, Vibrio, Veillonella, Peptostreptococcus, and Dialister. Co-occurrence network analyses showed that negative correlations were exclusively observed between Lactobacillus and other bacteria, and almost all non-Lactobacillus bacteria were positively correlated with each other. In particular, the most diverse and complex co-occurrence network of vaginal bacteria, as well as a complete loss of L. crispatus, was observed in women with CC. Logistic regression model identified HPV16 and Lactobacillus as significant risk and protective factors for CC, respectively. These results suggest that specific Lactobacillus species (e.g. L. crispatus and L. iners) can be used as important markers to target prevention measures prioritizing HPV16-infected women and other hrHPV-infected women for test, vaccination and treat initiatives.
